Newsbreakers

November 13, 2009

MLB.com reports that Reds pitching prospect Matt Maloney is a candidate to make the team's rotation in 2010.

Our View:

Maloney pitched well in his final three starts with the big club last season, going 2-1 with a 3.65 ERA, and had an very solid year in Triple-A as well. He fanned 125 against just 24 walks in 22 starts with Louisville and held a respectable 3.08 ERA. If the Reds don't make any noise in the offseason he'll have a legit shot at being a fourth or fifth starter.

September 30, 2009

Matt Maloney has been scratched from his scheduled start on Friday due to a blister on his left middle finger, according to the Twitter page of Reds' beat writer Mark Sheldon. Justin Lehr will start in Maloney's place against the Pirates.

Our View:

Maloney pitched well in his last start, allowing only two runs and picking up the win, but this isn't a huge loss for the Reds. He is a mediocre starting pitcher at best, and Lehr can give the team just as good a chance to win.

September 25, 2009

Matt Maloney only allowed two earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Friday's 10-4 win at Houston. He had no walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

The rookie improved his record to 2-4 over seven starts. He allowed two or less earned runs in each of his previous three.

September 17, 2009

Matt Maloney's five innings of two-run ball on Thursday night were enough for a 3-2 Reds victory, and the first win of his short career.

Our View:

In six starts for the Reds this season, Maloney is now 1-4 with a 5.35 ERA.

September 14, 2009

Matt Maloney threw a side-session Saturday at Wrigley Field, according to MLB.com. Maloney left his last start due to a blister on his middle finger.

Our View:

The Reds haven't decided if Maloney will get another start this season, but it might not be the worst idea to keep him out of the rotation. Although he was good in his last start before the blister, he has struggled for the most part this season.

September 9, 2009

According to MLB.com, starter Matt Maloney's outing on Tuesday was cut short due to a blister on his middle finger.

Our View:

Maloney was cruising against the Rockies before being pulled after five innings and just 66 pitches. It was clearly his best start of the season, so it's unfortunate that the blister popped up. The Reds are hoping it will heal by next week when it's his turn to start, but there are no guarantees as blisters can be a finicky injury (see: Josh Beckett).

September 8, 2009

Matt Maloney was solid in spot-starting duty for the Reds on Tuesday night, allowing just one run in five innings, but still took his fourth loss of the season, as Cincinnati lost 3-1 in Colorado.

Our View:

It was only the second time in five starts this season that he had allowed fewer than four runs. He can't be counted on to only allow one run his next time out.

September 8, 2009

Matt Maloney has been recalled by the Cincinnati Reds, according to the team's Twitter page. Maloney is scheduled to start Tuesday against the Rockies.

Our View:

Maloney is currently winless with the team this season, and he has a 6.46 ERA in 23.2 innings pitched. He is facing a smoking hot Rockies' team tonight, so he is not a good fantasy play for now or the rest of the season,

August 31, 2009

Matt Maloney has been optioned to Triple-A Louisville by the Reds, according to TSN.

Our View:

Maloney is winless over four starts with the Reds this season, and carries a 6.46 ERA. He was filling in for the injured Johnny Cueto.

August 29, 2009

Matt Maloney allowed five runs in six innings on Saturday to fall to 0-3, as the Dodgers routed the Reds 11-4 in Cincinnati.

Our View:

Maloney allowed 12 runs in three starts earlier this season for a 6.11 ERA, and didn't appear any closer to having things figured out on Saturday.

August 29, 2009

Matt Maloney has been recalled by the Reds from Triple-A Louisville, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:

Maloney will start Saturday's game against the Dodgers at the Great American Ballpark. He is only an option for deeper fantasy leagues though, as he is 0-2 with a 6.11 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over three starts with Cincinnati this season.

June 18, 2009

Matt Maloney was roughed up by the Braves on Thursday afternoon as the Reds fell at home 7-0. Maloney went 5.2 innings and allowed six runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five. He is now 0-2 on the year.

Our View:

Maloney has been pretty shaky over his last two starts, and he is losing fantasy value quickly. He is still worth a look in deeper NL-only leagues at this point, but if you can find a more solid option it would be wise to do so.

June 13, 2009

Matt Maloney struggled in Friday's 4-1 loss at Kansas City as he was rocked for four earned runs on six hits over six innings. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

The rookie looks to be an unstable fantasy option for his next outing. He holds a 4.50 ERA over two starts.

June 6, 2009

Matt Maloney was impressive in his major league debut on Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Reds defeated the Cubs 4-3 in 11 innings. Maloney went six innings and allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Nice work tonight by the rookie, and it is unfortunate that he couldn't get his first win. Maloney may be worth a flier in NL-only leagues, as he has been very good all season in Triple-A so far this year and he carried it over to the majors tonight. Keep an eye on Maloney as long as he stays in the Reds' rotation.

June 5, 2009

The Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting that Matt Maloney is scheduled to start on Saturday for the Reds against the Cubs. Maloney will be making his major league debut after compiling a 4-3 record with Triple-A Louisville this season.

Our View:

Maloney has been very impressive in Triple-A so far this season, posting a 2.00 ERA in ten starts. In his last start against Scranton, Maloney threw a three-hit shutout while not walking a batter and striking out ten. He has very little fantasy value, but don't be shocked if he throws a solid game.
