Newsbreakers

October 1, 2009

Garrett Mock held a deflated Braves team to just one run in six innings on Thursday, as the Nationals won 2-1 in Atlanta.

Our View:

He managed to lower his ghastly ERA to 5.62 in the process. He'll have to have a great start to 2010 to keep his place in the Nationals rotation.

September 26, 2009

Garrett Mock fell to 3-10 with the loss against Atlanta on Saturday. He gave up four earned runs (six total) off seven hits and four walks while striking out five in five innings.

Our View:

Mock continues to log mediocre outings for Washington, and even in their rotation, he'll have to improve this offseason if he wants to hold onto a spot.

September 20, 2009

Garrett Mock allowed four early runs, as the Nationals lost 6-2 to the Mets on Sunday.

Our View:

He did manage to go seven innings for the first time all season (26 starts). At age 26, and with a 5.83 ERA in 2009, he's no lock for the Nats' 2010 rotation.

September 15, 2009

Garrett Mock allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings on Sunday and was handed his eighth loss of the season as the Nationals fell to the Phillies 5-0.

Our View:

Mock has only had three quality starts since joining the Nationals rotation on July 19th and should not be owned in fantasy leagues.

September 9, 2009

Garrett Mock wasn't sharp on Wednesday, allowing four runs and nine baserunners in five innings, as Washington lost 6-5 to Philadelphia at home.

Our View:

Mock took a no-decision, but saw his ERA rise to 5.75 and WHIP to 1.75. Even in deep NL-only leagues, he is not an option.

September 4, 2009

Garrett Mock fell to 3-7 on the season after struggling against the Marlins on Friday. Mock lasted only three innings and allowed six runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out three.

Our View:

Mock was coming off an excellent start against the Cardinals, but overall he has not been great this season. His ERA is at 5.63 on the year, and he doesn't figure to be putting many more in the win column this season playing in Washington.

August 30, 2009

Garrett Mock held a dangerous Cardinal lineup to just two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings on Sunday. He fanned five, but took the loss as the Nationals fell 2-1.

Our View:

Mock deserved a better fate that picking up his sixth loss of the season, but the Nats couldn't solve Adam Wainwright and the Cardinal relievers. The quality start was Mock's first since August 14th.

August 25, 2009

Garrett Mock was just average on Tuesday night, but his offense was outstanding in the Nationals' 15-6 win over the Cubs. Mock went 5.2 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out six.

Our View:

Mock gets the win tonight, but this was one of his worst starts in the last month or so. He has been good as of late, but playing for the Nats really hurts his potential as a fantasy starter. It's hard to say that after his offense just put up 15 runs tonight, but this was the exception rather than the rule.

August 20, 2009

Garrett Mock fell to 2-5 on Thursday night, as he allowed two Rockie runs in five innings in the Nats 4-1 loss at home.

Our View:

Mock has allowed just four runs in his past 17 innings, however, and is worth a flier in NL-only leagues.

August 14, 2009

Garrett Mock pitched six scoreless innings on Friday night, helping the Nationals shutout the Reds 2-0 in Cincinnati.

Our View:

It was Mock's second straight quality start, and after seeing his ERA "peak" at 7.09 on July 29, he has it back down to 5.27. That ugly 1.92 WHIP, however, should preclude him from ownership in most leagues.

August 8, 2009

Garrett Mock earned his first win of the season on Saturday. He scattered five hits and three walks, allowing just two runs over six innings against the Diamondbacks. The hurler fanned seven in the 5-2 win.

Our View:

Despite Mock's strong Saturday outing, he still has a 6.14 ERA on the season and should be avoided in fantasy formats.

August 3, 2009

Garrett Mock allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over four innings in Monday's 8-4 win at Pittsburgh. He issued four walks and one strikeout.

Our View:

The Nats were trailing 3-0 when Mock exited, so he ends the night with a no-decision. Mock remains winless over four starts, and is only an option for the deepest of fantasy leagues right now.

July 29, 2009

Garrett Mock didn't lower his 7.06 ERA on Wednesday, allowing four runs in five innings, as the Nationals lost 7-5 in Milwaukee.

Our View:

As long as Mock stays in the Nationals' rotation, he'll remain one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball.

July 24, 2009

Garrett Mock gave up five runs (three earned) on nine hits over 5.1 innings in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Padres at Nationals Park. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Mock allowed four earned runs over his previous start, and is 0-4 with a 7.06 ERA this season. He is not fit for fantasy duty.

July 19, 2009

Garrett Mock got lit up by the Cubs on Sunday, allowing seven runs (four earned) in just 3.1 innings of work, as Chicago rolled to an 11-3 victory.

Our View:

Mock now has a 7.71 ERA and 2.08 WHIP in 16.1 innings this season, and is not an acceptable fantasy option.

July 13, 2009

Garrett Mock is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, according to MLBlogs.com.

Our View:

Mock has a 2.65 ERA in 51 minor league innings this season, but an ugly 6.92 one in 13 major league frames. He shouldn't be considered for an add in any format for the time being.

May 21, 2009

Garrett Mock has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse by the Nationals, according to TSN. Craig Stammen was recalled from Syracuse as the corresponding move.

Our View:

Mock failed to impress the Nationals with a poor 6.92 ERA and 1.85 WHIP over 13 innings of relief. He was not worth holding on standard fantasy rosters.

April 22, 2009

Garrett Mock took the loss in his second appearance of the season as the Nationals fell to the Braves 1-0 on Wednesday. Although groomed as a closer in the minors, he threw 1.2 innings on Wednesday. He did not allow a base runner while getting his first three outs, but a walk and a hit in the ninth inning was enough to stick him with the loss.

Our View:

It does not seem to make sense to be using Mock's young arm for more than three outs at a time. He pitched well for the most part, but may have tired out in his second frame.

April 19, 2009

Reliever Garrett Mock has been called up by the Nationals according to the Washington Post. GM Mike Rizzo says he will be considered for the closer's role.

Our View:

Mock has been groomed as a closer and the Nationals bullpen has been terrible in the early going. Keep an eye on how Manny Acta uses him in the early going.

April 4, 2009

Garrett Mock has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse by the Nationals, according to SI.com.

Our View:

Mock made 14 appearances this spring out of the bullpen. His overall numbers were solid, but not impressive enough pass the veterans that the team has in the pen. Look for him to make an appearance at some point this season, but he's unlikely to be a fantasy factor.
