Newsbreakers

October 6, 2009

Alcides Escobar will maintain his status as a rookie for the 2010 season, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View:

To be considered a rookie, a player must have both fewer than 130 major league at-bats, and "accumulated no more than 45 days on the active roster of a major league club during the period of 25-player limit (before September call-ups." Escobar is just one at-bat short of 130 for his career, so he barely made the cut-off. After batting .304 in his 125 2009 at-bats (he had four in 2008), he will likely be a front-runner for the 2010 National League Rookie of the Year award.

September 16, 2009

Alcides Escobar had the biggest game of his young career on Wednesday night, going 4-for-5 with three RBI, as Milwaukee won 9-5 at Wrigley Field.

Our View:

The four hits and three RBI were both career highs. Escobar could be worth a late-round flier next season, especially in NL-only leagues.

August 25, 2009

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Brewers' shortstop Alcides Escobar is not in Tuesday's lineup. He will be replaced by Craig Counsell, who will hit second.

Our View:

Escobar is hitting .313 since being called up, but the Brewers still think they are in the playoff hunt, so they will go to the veteran on occasion until they feel like they are eliminated. That day shouldn't be far off, so expect Escobar to be the everyday shortstop soon.

August 12, 2009

The Milwaukee Brewers have recalled top prospect Alcides Escobar from Triple-A Nashville, according to ESPN. Escobar will replace J.J. Hardy, who was optioned by the team, on the roster.

Our View:

Escobar has been waiting in the wings for the Brewers all season, and the team is finally giving him his chance. He could be worth a flier in NL-only leagues, and mixed leaguers in need of a shortstop should give him a look as well.

April 28, 2009

Top prospect Alcides Escobar went 2-for-5 and swiped his 11th steal of the season for Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday.

Our View:

Escobar continues to work on his hitting, as he is batting only .265 this season. Still, Escobar's defense and speed should make him a solid fantasy player in the not-too-distant future for the Brewers or another team.

January 29, 2009

Alcides Escobar signed a one-year deal with the Brewers on Thursday, according to the Brewers' official site. He wasn't yet eligible for arbitration, so his deal was simply renewed.

Our View:

Escobar isn't likely to have much fantasy value this year, but he is one of the better shortstop prospects in the game and is worth eying in keeper leagues.
