Newsbreakers

October 2, 2009

David Purcey was clobbered for seven earned runs on eight hits over a mere 3.2 innings in Friday's 13-7 loss at Baltimore. He had two walks with one strikeout.

Our View:

The young hurler suffered his worst loss of the season, and only earned one win over nine starts.

September 21, 2009

David Purcey only surrendered one earned run on four hits over 7.2 innings in Monday's 9-2 win over the Orioles at the Rogers Centre. He had four walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

It was a strong performance for Purcey, despite the four free passes. He earned his first win over seven starts, and only allowed three earned runs over his last two outings.

September 14, 2009

David Purcey only allowed two earned runs on five hits over 5.2 innings in Monday's 6-5 loss at Detroit. He issued four walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

Purcey pitched pretty well other than the four free passes, but was handed a no-decision. He remains winless over six starts.

September 8, 2009

David Purcey is back with the Blue Jays after being recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday, according to Sportsnet.ca. Purcey was 0-2 with a 7.01 ERA in five starts with the team this season.

Our View:

Purcey struggled in his time in the Jays' rotation earlier this season, but he has been pretty good in the second half for the Triple-A squad. He was 6-3 and held opponents to a .254 average after the Triple-A All-Star break.

May 1, 2009

David Purcey has been optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas by the Blue Jays, according to TSN.

Our View:

Purcey is yet to win over five starts, and allowed 20 earned runs, 18 walks and four homers over 25.2 innings. He won't be missed in fantasy leagues while working on his command in the minors.

April 22, 2009

David Purcey pitched much better on Wednesday, going 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking two. He did not factor into the decision.

Our View:

Purcey looked like he had much better control of his stuff tonight, and his two walks are very promising. He can strike people out, and if he can keep the walks to a minimum he can be an effective pitcher in all formats. He is a good guy to keep an eye on.

April 17, 2009

Pitcher David Purcey didn't have his best stuff on Friday. He allowed four hits and five runs over 3.2 innings against the A's. Purcey walked four, struck out two, hit a batter, and threw a wild pitch. He has now walked 13 batters over 15.1 innings this year.

Our View:

Purcey has good stuff, but like many young pitchers, he often struggles with his control. We continue to hope that a little bit of Roy Halladay will rub off on David, but it clearly hasn't happened yet.

April 12, 2009

David Purcey struck out 10 batters in 4.2 innings of work as the Blue Jays fell to the Indians 8-4 on Sunday. However, he walked six, surrendered four hits, and allowed four earned runs.

Our View:

Purcey needed a disturbing 113 pitches to get 14 outs on Sunday. Toronto needs a strong season from him, and they are hoping he can complete seven innings each time out. However, it's clear that he'll need better control in order to do so. The strikeout potential is there, but he won't be a strong play until he lands more pitches for strikes.

April 7, 2009

David Purcey pitched seven strong innings against the Tigers on Tuesday. He surrendered three runs and five hits while striking out five in the Blue Jays' 5-4 win.

Our View:

If Purcey can keep down the walk total (29 in 12 starts in '08), he may be able to provide the Jays with some nice depth at the front end of the rotation. If he emerges, look for him to stay in the No. 2 slot, right behind Roy Halladay.

March 30, 2009

David Purcey gave up two hits, five walks, and one earned run in Monday's 3-1 loss to the Yankees. He struck out two in the outing.

Our View:

It is believed that Purcey will open the season as the Blue Jays No. 2 starter. The big lefty can usually draw a lot of strikeouts, but walks have always been his nemesis. The 27-year-old's first seasons figures to be a roller coaster if he can not consistently command his pitches.

March 30, 2009

David Purcey will pitch in the No. 2 slot in the Blue Jays' rotation, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Purcey fired 58 strikeouts over 65 innings last season, but issued 29 walks and 40 earned runs. He is worth a look as a flier for AL-only leagues in case he improves his control this season.

March 24, 2009

David Purcey worked six innings and allowed only two runs (one earned) to the Phillies on Tuesday. He served up eight hits, walked two, and struck out three.

Our View:

The main part of this news is that Purcey was able to stretch out to six innings and be effective. It wasn't the cleanest outing, but the southpaw remains a minor sleeper in AL-only and deeper mixed formats.
