According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jordan Schafer is recovering quickly from season-ending wrist surgery and expects to have his cast removed in a week or two.

Our View:

Schafer was expected to have the cast on well into December, but he has made rapid strides in his recovery. He won't make it into into a winter ball league, but should be fine by the start of spring training. Don't expect him to make the club out of the gates this year though. Last season's opening day center fielder was demoted two months later and is expected to start 2010 in the minors to polish his skills.

August 31, 2009

Jordan Schafer underwent season-ending surgery on his left wrist Monday, according to MLB.com. Doctors removed a bone spur and also used a wire to link two small bones located near the bottom-left portion of Schafer's left hand.

Our View:

His wrist bothered him since the start of the season. Schafer won't be ready for winter ball, but the Braves have faith that he will be able to participate at the start of spring training.

August 25, 2009

According to MLB.com, Braves' outfelder Jordan Schafer will undergo an MRI on his wrist Wednesday. Shafer may need to undergo surgery on the wrist if the MRI shows damage.

Our View:

Schafer and the team decided to hold off on the surgery until they got an MRI on the injured wrist. It still seems likely that he will need the surgery, but at least there is a chance that he can avoid it. We will keep you updated on his condition when the MRI results are released.

August 25, 2009

The Braves have decided to shut young outfielder Jordan Schafer (left wrist surgery) down for the rest of 2009, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:

He is undergoing season-ending surgery on his injured wrist. Schafer hit just .204 in 167 major league at-bats this season, and will likely have to have a huge spring to make the team's opening day roster next season.

July 17, 2009

Updating a previous report, Jordan Schafer's sore left wrist was reevaluated by doctors and the injury has been diagnosed as a bone bruise, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He will be in a cast for two weeks and will be out of action for at least four.

Our View:

This is actually good news for the Braves, as they though he might miss the entire season. He'll likely heal up and then head back to Triple-A to finish out the minor league season. We'll probably see him again in September once rosters are expanded.

July 9, 2009

According to MLB.com, the Braves are awaiting test results on the left wrist of outfielder Jordan Schafer. An MRI test was inconclusive, so now the team is waiting for results from a CAT scan. It is a possibility the Schafer may miss the rest of the season.

Our View:

The Braves have been mystified by this injury, but they won't be taking any chances with the youngster. We will know more when the CAT scan results come back, but right now it looks like Schafer has no value in any fantasy league except possibly keepers.

July 5, 2009

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Braves' outfielder Jordan Schafer had to leave Friday night's game with Triple-A Gwinnett due to a wrist injury. He is expected to miss significant time, as this injury has already caused him to miss time this season.

Our View:

Schafer injured the wrist on opening day, and it has been bothering him ever since. The Braves don't want to take any chances with their young outfielder, so expect him to miss some time. He has no fantasy value, but he could be a solid option in the next few years.

June 10, 2009

MLB.com reports that Jordan Schafer will miss two weeks with a bone bruise in his left hand. The ailment is different from the one that plagued him while with the Braves.

Our View:

Schafer struck out in 63 of his 167 major league at bats this season and the acquisition of Nate McLouth meant the team could afford to send him back to the minors. Barring an injury, Schafer will have to show much greater plate discipline before being called back up.

June 2, 2009

Contrary to previous reports, the Braves Jordan Schafer will indeed be sent down to Triple-A Gwinnett according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman. Gregor Blanco is being called up to take his roster spot.

Our View:

Schafer has been struggling mightily, while Blanco has been hot of late, so this comes as little surprise. Blanco may be worth a look in deeper leagues, while Schafer should not fall too far off the radar as well. If he regains his stroke, he could eventually be back in the bigs and ready to do damage.

June 2, 2009

Despite batting .160 with 25 strikeouts and a .187 slugging percentage since May 7, Jordan Schafer's major league roster spot remains secure according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman.

Our View:

Schafer has struggled mightily, and is currently not worth a roster spot in anything but keeper leagues, but because of his tremendous upside he is worth keeping an eye on the rest of the season.

April 29, 2009

Jordan Schafer was 0-for-1 with three walks and a stolen base as the Braves fell to the Cardinals 5-3 on Wednesday.

Our View:

Schafer has 12 walks in his last nine games against just five strikeouts. That's a marked improvement as he had become prone to the strikeout in a two week long slump. He finally got his first steal tonight, and many more are expected of him.

April 27, 2009

The Braves have been pleased with Jordan Schafer as of late, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He is being more patient at the plate and has cut down on his strikeouts. Chipper Jones said, "If he keeps showing the consistency he is showing now, you are going to see him move up the order." He is currently batting seventh in the order.

Our View:

He only has three hits over his last six games, but drew eight walks over the span. He is still not worth considering for fantasy lineups outside of deeper NL-only leagues.

April 21, 2009

MLB.com reports that center fielder Jordan Schafer is battling left hand and wrist problems, but he should be able to stay in the lineup.

Our View:

Schafer has struggled mightily since a hot start and has struck out 19 times in 47 at bats. Clearly he needs some more plate discipline and until he gets some, he is not going to be a good fantasy option.

April 16, 2009

Jordan Schafer went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Marlins. He was 1-for-11 in the series.

Our View:

The rookie center fielder already has 14 strikeouts in 34 at bats. He has shown a little power with his two home runs in the season's first week, but he only hit 10 all of last season at Double-A. It seems he would benefit from focusing on making contact rather than hitting home runs.

April 8, 2009

The Braves' rookie center fielder went deep again on Wednesday in a 12-11 slugfest that ended up favoring the Phillies. It was his second home run in three games.

Our View:

The rookie is known more for his speed than anything, but is showing off his power stroke early. If he keeps this up he'll have value outside of NL-only leagues, and could be a sneaky waiver wire pick up.

April 5, 2009

Jordan Schafer hit a home run in his first Major League at-bat on Sunday. It was a solo shot in the MLB opener between the Phillies and Braves.

Our View:

Schafer won the starting center field job late in spring and looks to be a promising young player for the Braves. He's known more for his speed than his power, but his first at-bat produced a 400+ foot home run to the deepest part of the ball park.

April 3, 2009

The Braves have named Jordan Schafer the team's starting center fielder for the 2009 season, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

The Braves must have a huge amount of confidence in the 22-year-old Schafer, who was suspended for 50 games a season ago for violating baseball's drug policy, since he has never played a second of ball beyond the Double-A level.

March 18, 2009

Jordan Schafer was 3-for-5 Wednesday with an RBI and a run scored.

Our View:

Schafer is still fighting to win the job in center field. He looks solid defensively, has a cannon arm, is hitting .419 this spring and is out performing favorite Josh Anderson. Stay tuned. This could get interesting over the next few weeks.

March 15, 2009

Jordan Schafer was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot as the Braves defeated the Astros 3-2 on Sunday. He played all nine innings in center field and also scored a run.

Our View:

Schafer plays a strong center field and he has the type of hose managers covet. He hit well in the second half of last season and it all adds up to a legitimate shot at being the opening day center fielder in Atlanta, despite being only 22. He is 10-for-26 this spring.

March 13, 2009

Jordan Schafer has a shot at earning the starting spot in center field, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitition. The position has been deemed open by manager Bobby Cox and Schafer is one of the leading candidates for the job.

Our View:

Schafer is a highly regarded prospect, and won't be rushed up this year, especially with other options available, but has hit very well since returning from a sprained shoulder. He has plus speed and defensive abilities and could be a promising player if he makes the cut. However, Josh Anderson is still considered a slight favorite.

March 6, 2009

Jordan Schafer spraied his AC joint while diving for a ball last Saturday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:

Skipper Bobby Cox believes he will return to the diamond in 3-5 days. He cannot afford to miss much time while competing for the Braves' starting gig in center field.

February 28, 2009

Jordan Schafer went 2-for-4 with three runs scored in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Blue Jays. He had one walk, but struck out twice.

Our View:

That was the second time he struck out twice in a game this spring, which will not help his chances of winning the Braves' starting gig in center field.

February 25, 2009

Jordan Schafer went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Tigers. He struck out twice.

Our View:

Schafer made some noise today in his bid for the starting gig in center field, which is currently up for grabs.

January 25, 2009

Jordan Schafer denies using HGH, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was suspended 50 games last year for being charged of using the illegal growth hormone. He blamed his suspension on "being caught hanging around a bad group of people." He added, "There is not much to say about it. I took my penalty. I took my punishment. Really I am just trying to move on."

Our View:

The 22-year-old is viewed as a future center fielder in Atlanta. The position is currently unsettled for 2009, but Schafer noted that he may start the season with Triple-A Gwinnett.
