J.R. Towles turned in his first multi home run effort in 83 career games on Wednesday, but that was all the Astros could muster, as Houston lost 10-3 in Philadelphia.
Towles, a career .187 hitter in 230 at-bats, is fighting to stay alive in the Astros organization, so Wednesday night was a big boost to his chances. At just age 25, the Astros will likely give him one more chance before giving up on him.
J.R. Towles has been recalled by the Houston Astros', according to the
Towles was once considered the fture at the catching position for the Astros, and he still may be at some point, but his major league career has been a disappointment so far. He is known for his bat, but he has struggled at the plate over the past few seasons. It may not be time to give up on him just yet, but he needs to make an impact soon.
J.R. Towles will be sent down to the minors prior to Houston's game on Tuesday, according to the
The move will be made in response to Humberto Quintero's activation from the DL. Towles is young and still has potential as a skilled-hitting catcher, though it looks like, barring injury, he'll have to wait until 2010 before he gets another chance to showcase that potential.
The Astros called up catcher J.R. Towles from Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday. He went 1-for-3 against the Brewers.
Towles, 25, was hitting .344 over 11 games for Round Rock. He will be a backup behind Ivan Rodriguez, but it would be nice to see him build a little confidence during this trip up. Towles could still have a bright future.
Houston sent J.R. Towles down to Triple-A on Friday, according to
Towles lost whatever fantasy potential you may have placed in him when the Astros signed Ivan Rodriguez in the middle of the month. Towles is still young and does have potential at the plate, having shown great hitting prowess in the minors, though it probably won't be until 2010 when he'll get another real shot at an everyday gig. Humberto Quintero was retained as Rodriguez's backup.
