Newsbreakers

October 2, 2009

David Price only surrendered one earned run on two hits over seven innings in Friday's 13-4 win over the Yankees at Tropicana Field. He had two walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

The future star claimed his 10th win of 2009, and bounced back from his previous start, when he was rocked for five earned runs over five innings at Texas.

September 27, 2009

David Price was far from sharp in his outing on Sunday against the Rangers. He allowed five runs on six hits and a pair of walks over just five innings in a 7-6 win.

Our View:

Last year's postseason darling is not enjoying the same success in 2009. He's just 9-7 with a 4.60 ERA and has flubbed on big expectations for his rookie campaign.

September 20, 2009

David Price allowed just one run in 6.2 innings on Sunday, out-dueling Roy Halladay, as Tampa Bay beat the Jays 3-1 at home.

Our View:

In four September starts, Price is now 2-1 with a 3.65 ERA.

September 14, 2009

David Price gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits over seven innings in Monday's 8-4 win at Baltimore. He had two walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

Price did not have a strong outing, but the Rays scored enough runs to improve his record to 8-7. The rookie is 2-0 against Baltimore.

September 8, 2009

David Price only allowed two earned runs on three hits over six innings in Tuesday's 3-2 loss at New York. He had two walks with six strikeouts.

Our View:

Price pitched well tonight, but was handed a no-decision due to poor run support. Price allowed two or less earned runs in five of his last eight starts.

September 3, 2009

David Price was knocked around by the Red Sox on Thursday as the Rays fell by a score of 6-3. Price went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two.

Our View:

Price had been on a run of good outings coming into tonight, but he didn't have the good stuff in this outing. Hopefully this was just one bad game, but watch to see how Price performs in his next start.

August 29, 2009

David Price pitched a career high 7.1 innings on Saturday, allowing one run and striking out four, as the Rays beat the Tigers 3-1 in Detroit.

Our View:

Price has now pitched seven innings in back-to-back starts for the first time in his young career. He's lowered his ERA from 5.03 to 4.63 in the process.

August 23, 2009

David Price matched his season high in innings on Sunday, allowing three runs in seven frames, but fell to 6-6 as the Rays lost 4-0 to the Rangers at home.

Our View:

Price has allowed more than three runs just once in his last five starts, and looks to be maturing. He's a good play down the stretch.

August 18, 2009

David Price only issued two earned runs on seven hits over five innings in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Orioles at Tropicana Field. He had three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

The rookie had a nice performance from the hill, and now has a winning record at 6-5. Price allowed two or less earned runs in three of his last four starts, and shall remain active in AL-only leagues.

August 11, 2009

David Price was lit up for six runs (five earned) on eight hits over six innings in Tuesday's 6-0 loss at the Angels. He had no walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

Price was handed a loss, and is now 5-5 with a 5.13 ERA. The future star allowed two or less earned runs in each of his previous two starts, and should remain active in AL-only leagues following tonight's tough outing.

August 5, 2009

David Price only allowed two earned runs on six hits over six innings in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Red Sox at Tropicana Field. He issued no walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

Price pitched well tonight, and now has a winning record at 5-4. He only allowed one earned run over seven innings in his previous start against Kansas City, and he is worth employing in AL-only leagues for his next battle from the bump.

July 31, 2009

David Price was in control from the hill in Friday's 8-2 win over Kansas City at Tropicana Field, as he only issued one earned run on five hits over seven innings. He had two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Price evened his record to 4-4, and bounced back well from his last outing when he was rocked for six earned runs over three innings at Toronto. He is worth consideration in AL-only leagues for his next turn in the Rays' rotation.

July 25, 2009

David Price got knocked around by the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon. He allowed six runs on nine hits over just three innings before getting pulled. He managed to avoid the loss though as the Rays eventually won the game in the 12th inning.

Our View:

The highly regarded prospect and 2008 postseason hero has been atrocious this season. He has amassed just two quality starts out of his 11 outings this season. Hang on to him in keeper leagues, but it may be time to let him go in single year leagues for 2009.

July 20, 2009

David Price was mediocre against the White Sox on Monday while dropping to 3-4, giving up four runs off eight hits and two walks while striking out six in six innings.

Our View:

Price has all the talent in the world but continues to toil in mediocrity out of Tampa Bay's rotation. On a positive note, he has walked just three batters in 12 innings over his past two starts.

July 9, 2009

David Price was outstanding on Thursday in the Rays' 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Price went six innings and allowed one run on six hits while walking one and striking out seven. He is now 3-3 on the year.

Our View:

Price has either been really good or really bad in his starts this season, and he was really good today. The key stat in his line is the one walk, because if he can stay in control his stuff is good enough to do this every time out. He is still a good play in all leagues.

July 4, 2009

David Price got rocked on Saturday, surrendering six earned runs in in just 1.1 innings of work, as the Rangers routed the Rays 12-4 in Arlington.

Our View:

Price is definitely experiencing some rookie woes in 2009, and is not a player to start every time out. He is capable of being great still, but you should hold off on starting him, and his astronomical 1.71 WHIP, until he proves he can be more consistent.

June 28, 2009

David Price was considerably better on Sunday than his last start as he picked up his second win of the season against the Marlins. Price went 6.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits while walking five and striking out four. The Rays won the game 5-2.

Our View:

Price rebounded nicely after his 10 run peformance earlier this week. He is still young, and he will have bad outings, but his talent is just too great to dismiss. He should be utilized in all leagues, and if he can get the walks down he can be a dominant fantasy force.

June 23, 2009

David Price was roughed up for 10 runs (five earned) on seven hits over a mere 4.1 innings of work in Tuesday's 10-1 loss to the Phillies at Tropicana Field. He had two walks and two strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View:

The prized rookie has a bright future ahead of him with the Rays, but is going to have disastrous outings like tonight while he develops. Price has now given up 10 earned runs over his last two starts, and should only be considered for AL-only leagues for his next outing.

June 17, 2009

David Price allowed 10 hits, but lasted seven innings against the Rockies on Wednesday. The 23-year-old walked none while striking out five and allowing five home runs in the 5-3 loss.

Our View:

This has to be seen as a positive step forward despite the loss. It was by far his longest outing, and he didn't walk anyone. In his first four starts, he had walked 18 hitters in 19 innings. His strikeout rate fell some, but the Rays will gladly accept fewer strikeouts if it means no free passes.

June 11, 2009

David Price was solid in his short outing in Thursday's 11-1 win over the Angels at Tropicana Field, as he only allowed one earned run on two hits over 4.1 innings. He had six walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:

Price exited the game after firing 105 pitches, with 61 landing for strikes. Price took a no-decision tonight, and is yet to suffer a loss over four starts with the Rays. The future ace should remain active in fantasy leagues.

June 6, 2009

David Price showed some control issues on Saturday in the Rays' 9-7 win over the Yankees. Price went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits while walking five and striking out three. He did not factor into the decision.

Our View:

Price was pretty good today when he kept the ball in the zone, but five walks in 5.2 innings is too high. He was lucky to work out of it for the most part, and his line was by no means bad today. The sky is the limit for Price, and the more he pitches at this level the better he will get. He should be a very good play in all leagues going forward.

June 5, 2009

After having his scheduled start Friday night in Yankee Stadium washed out by rain, David Price will not miss a turn and still get the ball on Saturday when the Rays face CC Sabathia according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Be sure to get him in your starting lineup on Saturday.

May 30, 2009

David Price only allowed one earned run on five hits over 5.2 innings in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Twins at Tropicana Field. He had two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Our View:

The future star earned his first regular season win in the majors with a strong performance tonight. Price should be owned in all fantasy formats, and his stock will continue to rise.

May 30, 2009

The Tampa Tribune reports that David Price says that his focus for Saturday's start against the Twins is to be more efficient and working deeper in the game.

Our View:

That's a good place to start. He needed 100 pitches to get just 10 outs in his first major league start this season. He should be a strong option moving forward, but it will help if he can at least get to the sixth.

May 25, 2009

David Price needed 100 pitches to get 10 outs in Monday's 11-10 loss to the Indians. He allowed two runs on four hits and five walks. The phenom did manage six strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of work and he did not factor in the decision.

Our View:

This certainly was not the 2009 debut the youngster was hoping for. Walks were the source of his troubles in today's game. Several young pitchers experience the same problems early in their careers as they try to strike out everyone rather than rely on their defense. We expect significant improvement in short order.

May 22, 2009

ESPN is reporting that David Price has been called up to join the Rays rotation. He will start on Monday in Scott Kazmir's place. Kazmir is on the 15-day DL with strained quad.

Our View:

Price is universally owned, even though he has been stuck at Triple-A all season long. There is as much hype around him as any prospect in the game, and we'll enjoy watching what he can do this season. He'll face the Indians on Monday, and we like his odds.

March 25, 2009

David Price has been optioned to Triple-A by the Rays, even though he has had a very strong spring, according to MLB.com. It was thought Price had a shot to make the Rays rotation this season.

Our View:

Keep an eye on his progress in Triple-A. He should be back up at some point this season, and he'll likely command some fantasy attention when he is. Barring an injury to Tampa's starting rotation or a trade, the Rays will have to be creative when calling upon Price in 2009.

March 22, 2009

David Price threw four shutout innings against the Yankees on Sunday. He allowed three hits and two walks, while striking out four hitters.

Our View:

The popular opinion still holds that Price will start the season in Triple-A, but he has done everything possible this spring to warrant a spot in the Rays' starting rotation. Over 8.1 innings, he has allowed only one run, six hits, and 10 strikeouts.

March 22, 2009

David Price will make the start for Rays Sunday when they take on the Yankees in a Grapefruit League matchup, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:

The young phenom was not originally scheduled to start, but a rain-out on Saturday altered the Rays rotation a bit.

March 16, 2009

David Price made his second appearance of the spring on Monday against the Pirates. He earned the win after allowing a run, three hits, and two walks while striking out two.

Our View:

Price has allowed one run in 4.1 innnings of work this spring. Still, it is believed the Rays may elect to start him out at Triple-A this season, barring an injury to the rest of their rotation. The team is loaded with talented young arms, and Price's is the youngest. They would like to keep his workload under 200 innings this season.

March 11, 2009

David Price has fared well in spring training and is by far the Rays' best contender for the fifth spot in the rotation, but it is likely he will start the season at Triple-A Durham, according to the St. Petersburg Times. The Rays are cautious when it comes to their prized young arms, and realize that younger pitchers are at greater risk of arm injuries when they receive an increase of more than 20 percent in innings pitched from one season to the next.

Our View:

Price only pitched 130 innings in 2008 (including minors), and it seems unlikely the Rays will allow him to leap to more than 200 innings this season. They'd likely prefer around 170 or so. Price is still worth targeting late in drafts even though he may not start the season in the Rays' rotation.
