October 1, 2009

Jay Bruce had a tough day at the plate on Thursday in the Reds' 13-0 loss to the Cards. Bruce went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the blowout loss.

Our View:

Bruce has been smoking hot over the last week, but he struggled badly at the dish today. He was going against Cy Young candidate Chris Carpenter today, so a tough afternoon isn't a complete shocker. If he can stay healthy next season, he could be in line for a big year.

September 29, 2009

Jay Bruce clubbed two home runs and drove in five in the Reds convincing 7-2 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Our View:

Bruce has now hit four homers and driven in nine in his last four games. He's amassed six hits and scored seven runs over that span, and it's safe to say he's swinging a hot stick.

September 26, 2009

Jay Bruce appears to be getting his swing back. The talented youngster went 2-for-3 with his 20th homer, three RBI and three runs scored in the Reds explosive 10-4 win over the Astros on Saturday.

Our View:

Bruce now has homers in back to back games and has driven in 11 since returning from the DL on September 14th.

September 17, 2009

After being sidelined since early June with a broken wrist, Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with two RBI in his fourth game back in the Reds lineup on Thursday.

Our View:

He now has four RBI since being activated. He could be a great mid-to-late round gamble in 2010.

September 14, 2009

The Cincinnati Reds have activated outfielder Jay Bruce of the DL, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Mark Sheldon. Bruce has been sidelined since early July with a broken wrist.

Our View:

Bruce was having a nice power year before his injury, but his .207 average hurt his fantasy value significantly. He hasn't played in the Bigs in almost two months, so it might take him a little while to get going again, but he could be worth a look if you are desperate for some power.

September 2, 2009

Jay Bruce (recovery from broken wrist) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment this Thursday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:

He will be with Triple-A Louisville. He's expected to rejoin the team sometime during their impending ten game road trip.

August 30, 2009

MLBlogs.com is reporting that Reds' outfielder Jay Bruce has been cleared to begin hitting. Bruce hopes to hit off a pitching machine on Monday and then progress to taking batting practice.

Our View:

Th team hasn't set a timetable for a return, but Bruce would like to play again this season. He still has a ways to go, but the good news is that the biggest step, getting cleared to start swinging, is behind him now.

August 7, 2009

Jay Bruce has had the cast removed from his fractured right wrist, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:

Bruce says that it's not 100 percent, but that he still expects to be ready by early September. Stay tuned for updates.

July 13, 2009

Jay Bruce is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with his broken right wrist, according to the team.

Our View:

Thankfully for the Reds, Bruce didn't suffer any tendon or ligament damage. He is due to be re-examined on Thursday. Though he has 18 home runs this season, Bruce is batting just .207, and it's clear he has a long way to go in his progression as a player. Look for Laynce Nix to get the majority of the playing time in right field while he is out.

July 11, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Jay Bruce suffered a broken right wrist while sliding for a catch in tonight's game against the Mets at Citi Field, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

He will fly back to Cincinnati to be examined. The Reds are yet to speculate on how long Bruce may be on the shelf.

July 11, 2009

Jay Bruce exited Saturday's battle with the Mets after injuring his right arm while attempting a sliding catch in the first inning, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

His wrist folded back awkwardly, and the severity of the injury is yet to be determined. Chris Dickerson replaced Bruce in right field.

July 11, 2009

Jay Bruce is back in the Reds starting lineup on Saturday after being given two days off, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.

Our View:

Bruce has disappointingly appeared to be little more than Adam Dunn with less plate discipline this season. He provides a lot of power, for the Reds and fantasy lineups, but hasn't yet proven himself capable of doing much else.

July 9, 2009

Jay Bruce is not in the Reds' lineup for Thursday night's game against the Phillies. He is being replaced by Chris Dickerson in right field, while Jonny Gomes starts in left.

Our View:

Bruce has been struggling recently, and he has been moved down in the order as of late. It looks like this is just a routine day off, but it could have something to do with his struggles. We will keep you updated on his status for the weekend.

July 5, 2009

Jay Bruce provided the only RBI of the game for the Reds on Sunday in their 10-1 loss to the Cardinals. Bruce was 1-for-4 with a triple and the RBI.

Our View:

The Reds couldn't get anything going against Cards' starter Chris Carpenter today, but Bruce's RBI triple was the lone bright spot. He is still showing the power we have come to expect, but he needs to show more consistency at the plate.

June 27, 2009

Jay Bruce belted his 18th home run of the season, going 1-for-3 against the Indians on Saturday.

Our View:

It was a typical stat line for Bruce, who continues to leave the yard at a very fine pace despite a batting average floating just barely above .200. He'll continue to bug his owners if he doesn't begin to collect more hits, though he remains a must-start given his great power.

June 25, 2009

Jay Bruce drove in two runs on Thursday in the Reds 7-5 win over Toronto, but still went just 1-for-5, dipping his average to .213.

Our View:

Bruce has 17 home runs this season, but has still yet to reach 40 RBIs and has now struck out 54 times in 69 games. If you can stomach his abysmal average, he is worth starting because of his prolific power. However, if he doesn't improve his approach at the plate soon, the power could dry up, too.

June 23, 2009

Jay Bruce drove in two runs on Tuesday, but the Reds fell 7-5 to Toronto.

Our View:

It was the first time Bruce had driven in a run without hitting a home run since May 31. He will probably eventually be a great big league hitter, but unless you are absolutely desperate for power, he might not be worth starting at this point in time because of his woeful .216 average.

June 20, 2009

Jay Bruce pounded another homer on Saturday in the Reds' 10-8 loss to the White Sox. Bruce went 2-for-5 with a double, a homer, a run scored, and an RBI in the game.

Our View:

Bruce is not putting up a great average, but the power is still there. He now has 17 bombs on the year, and if he starts to get more consistent, he can be a top notch fantasy outfielder.

June 11, 2009

Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored in the Reds 4-2 win over the Nationals on Wednesday.

Our View:

Bruce entered the game a mere 3-for-36 in his last 10 games. It's too early to call the slump over, though. Bruce has hit poorly all season long and his average currently stands at .218.

June 7, 2009

Jay Bruce is a healthy scratch for Sunday's game against the Cubs, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:

He is getting a mental day off while struggling in a 6-for-52 slump at the plate. Jonny Gomes, Chris Dickerson and Laynce Nix will roam the outfield for Cincinnati.

May 27, 2009

Jay Bruce crushed two home runs in his 3-for-4, four-RBI effort against the Astros on Wednesday. He now has 14 on the season.

Our View:

Bruce's average and plate discipline still need work, but his power has officially arrive. His 14 homers and 29 RBI will attest to that, but he needs to work on the .241 average. Still, he's a nice outfield option in fantasy leagues.

May 25, 2009

Jay Bruce is out of Monday's lineup against the Astros, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:

Bruce is getting the day off, likely since he is hitless over his last 13 at-bats. Jonny Gomes will roam right field in his place.

May 19, 2009

Jay Bruce hit his 12th home run in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies, but it was also his only hit in four trips. He struck out in his other three plate appearances.

Our View:

Bruce's power is legit, but he's hitting just .232 on the season. He has one of the sweetest swings in the game, but right now it is full of holes. JHe has all the tools, but owners will have to wait until he puts it all together. He may be a better keeper league pick than anything right now.

May 10, 2009

Jay Bruce crushed a two-run home run in Sunday's 8-7 loss to the Cardinals. It was his only hit in six at bats and his tenth home run of the season.

Our View:

Bruce is slugging home runs at an impressive rate (one per 10.7 at bats) in his second season, and he is hitting .262 overall. Half of his home runs have come since May 3.

May 9, 2009

Jay Bruce blasted his ninth home run of the season in Saturday's 8-3 win over the Cardinals. It was his only hit in the game.

Our View:

The homer was a two-run shot off Kyle Lohse in the first inning and the Reds never looked back. Bruce has been a solid contributor to the upstart Reds this season and it appears his power stroke is in full bloom. Expect more bombs down the road.

May 7, 2009

Jay Bruce went 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI in Cincinatti's 6-5 victory over the Brewers on Thursday. Bruce now has seven home runs on the season.

Our View:

The Reds needed Bruce to step up tonight with Votto and Phillips out, and he did just that. Since his return from a bruised hand, Bruce has been showing why he is considered one of the top young players in the game. He is a strong play in all leagues, and it would be smart to try acquiring him in a trade before he really takes off.

April 26, 2009

Outfielder Jay Bruce went 3-for-3 with two homers, two runs, four RBI, and a walk in Sunday's win over the Braves. Over the past six games, Bruce is 10-for-22 with four homers, six runs, and right RBI.

Our View:

The bruised right hand may have been a blessing in disguise. Bruce got off to an awful start, but the injury allowed him to take a breath, stop pressing, and start on his hot run.

April 22, 2009

Jay Bruce was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the Reds 3-0 win over the Cubs on Wednesday. He has hit home runs in each of his last two games.

Our View:

Bruce appears to be heating up and he is capable of a very hot streak. Perhaps he is on the verge of one. Fantasy owners need not panic as it concerns Bruce as he should be in line for a solid 2009.

April 21, 2009

Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored in Tuesday's 7-2 loss to the Cubs.

Our View:

Bruce is hitting just .211 early on this season, but he should steadily bring that number up throughout the summer. Despite having only eight hits, he has seven RBI and five runs scored meaning he has still produced throughout a slump.

April 21, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Jay Bruce is in the Reds' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs. He has missed the last three days with a bruised right hand.

Our View:

Bruce is hitting fifth in the lineup tonight and is safe to deploy in all fantasy lineups. Bruce has struggled to start the season, but it is only a matter of time before he takes off.

April 20, 2009

Jay Bruce planned to play Monday with a bruised right hand but was a last-minute scratch, though he's expected to return to Cincinnati's lineup on Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

It appears to be a safe bet that Bruce will play on Tuesday, so you should feel pretty comfortable with him in your lineup. He's struggled out of the gates thus far but is simply too skilled not to pick things up eventually.

April 20, 2009

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Jay Bruce is hoping to return to the Reds' lineup on Monday. He has missed the last few games with a sore right hand after a checked swing.

Our View:

Bruce wants to play Monday, but it seems more likely he will be out again. He should be in the lineup Tuesday, but stay posted on his status for tonight's game. If he can't go tonight, he will most likely be replaced by Laynce Nix again.

April 18, 2009

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Jay Bruce is not in the lineup for tonight's game against the Astros.

Our View:

Bruce is dealing with a sore hand after being hit by Yovani Gallardo on Monday. He will be replaced by Laynce Nix. Be sure to adjust your lineup accordingly.

April 14, 2009

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Jay Bruce was seen with his right hand wrapped during Tuesday's pregame. He was hit in the hand in Monday's game.

Our View:

Nobody, including Bruce, seems to be concerned about this injury. He is in the lineup Tuesday, and he said the wrap was just to keep the swelling down and that he would not wear it during the game.

April 13, 2009

Jay Bruce hit his first home run of the season on Monday in the Reds 7-6 win over the Brewers. He had two RBI and two runs scored, but also struck out twice in the victory.

Our View:

Bruce has not gotten off to a great start, but the home run gets the monkey off his back. He was hitting fifth in the order after appearing in the No. 6 spot on Sunday.

April 12, 2009

Jay Bruce was dropped from the fifth to the sixth spot in the Reds' batting order for Saturday's game against Pittsburgh, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:

Bruce is 3-for-16 so far, with no homers, and skipper Dusty Baker moved him down a spot in the order to take some pressure off of him while facing lefty hurler Paul Maholm. Bruce moved back to his regular fifth spot for today's game.

April 6, 2009

Jay Bruce went 1-for-4 with a double in Monday's 2-1 loss to the Mets.

Our View:

The Reds were limited to three hits in the game, and Bruce collected their only extra-base hit.

March 21, 2009

Jay Bruce was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI on Saturday. The home run was his second of the spring.

Our View:

Bruce needs to improve on his average from last year, but expect him to come close to 30 homers. His RBI totals should improve dramatically as well.

March 6, 2009

Jay Bruce went 1-for-2 with a single in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Twins in the Grapefruit League. The Reds only mustered four hits, all of them singles.

Our View:

Bruce is hitting fine so far, and he is expected to be a solid source for power (and potentially RBI) this season.

March 3, 2009

Jay Bruce went 1-for-1 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's 9-8 win over the Red Sox in the Grapefruit League.

Our View:

That marks Bruce's first homer of the spring, and he is expected to be a solid source for power in 2009.

February 26, 2009

Jay Bruce was held hitless in two trips to the dish in the Reds' 10-4 defeat at the hands of the Twins Thursday.

Our View:

Bruce began his inaugural MLB season about as hot as anyone could have ever imagined he would, but then wore done as pitchers began to expose his weaknesses. He must now avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, so to speak.

February 21, 2009

TSN reports that the Reds and Jay Bruce have agreed to a one-year deal. Terms were not announced.

Our View:

After a legendary start, Bruce ended up having a pretty ordinary season. He should be able to improve on all of his numbers as he is set for his first full season in the majors.
