Newsbreakers

September 22, 2009

Colby Rasmus had a big night in the Cardinals 11-2 blowout of the Astros on Tuesday. The rookie center fielder went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and hit his 16th homer of the season.

Our View:

Rasmus is having a solid rookie campaign and has done well adjusting to Tony LaRussa's sporadic outfield rotation. Tuesday's effort was his fifth multi-hit game this month.

September 15, 2009

Cardinals rookie outfielder Colby Rasmus is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Marlins.

Our View:

Rasmus isn't injured and is coming off a big game last night, so the fact that he's sitting was just a judgment call by Manager Tony LaRussa. He seems to do this to Colby every time the rookie has a big game. There is a lefty on the mound for the Marlins, but Rasmus is being bumped in favor of another lefty (Rick Ankiel), which makes no sense. His fantasy value would greatly increase if the Cardinal manager would let him play consistently and get into a groove.

September 14, 2009

Colby Rasmus went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in tonight's 11-6 win over Florida at Busch Stadium. He hit two singles and a three-run homer off Matt Lindstrom.

Our View:

Rasmus is hitting well right now, as he notched multiple hits in three of his last five games, with five RBI over the span. The prized rookie outfielder also ended a 12-game skid without a homer, and has 15 for 2009.

September 9, 2009

Colby Rasmus returned to the Cardinals starting lineup on Wednesday.

Our View:

Rasmus is dealing with a sore left heel and wasn't expected to play until Friday, but he's back in the lineup against the Brewers and is hitting second and playing center field. Tony LaRussa likely wants to pack the lineup full of left-handers to combat Jeff Suppan.

September 8, 2009

Colby Rasmus was held out of the Cardinals lineup on Tuesday against the Brewers with the sore left heel that has bothered him for much of the season, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

He likely won't be back in the lineup until Friday vs. the Braves.

August 29, 2009

Colby Rasmus drove in his first runs in a week on Saturday, hitting a three-run bomb in the fifth inning to help the Cardinals beat the Nationals 9-4 at home.

Our View:

Rasmus' rookie of the year campaign has lost some luster the past two months, but the five tool first-year player is still hitting .252 with 14 home runs and 44 RBI in 2009.

August 18, 2009

According to MLBlogs.com, Cardinals rookie Colby Rasmus was not in Tuesday's lineup against the Dodgers due to swelling in his tonsils.

Our View:

No word on the seriousness of Rasmus' condition, or what it even is, but he was slated to start the game if he was feeling well. It seemed odd that he hadn't played since launching a game-winning, walk-off home run against Padres closer Heath Bell on Sunday. Looks like this is why. Consider him day-to-day.

August 16, 2009

Colby Rasmus launched a walk-off two-run homer off All Star closer Heath Bell with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Cardinals a 7-5 come from behind win.

Our View:

Rasmus has struggled recently, but the talented rookie came through in a big way on Sunday. He was 1-for-4 on the day and the homer was his first since July 7th.

July 27, 2009

Colby Rasmus will miss his fourth straight game on Monday with a sore left heel, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

The young and ailing outfielder has apparently received two cortisone injections in the heel, however, and could be ready to return by as early as Tuesday night.

July 26, 2009

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals' rookie Colby Rasmus will have his sore heel examined by team doctors when the team returns home on Monday. Rasmus has missed time during this roadtrip because of the deep bruise to his left heel.

Our View:

Tony La Russa said that Rasmus could play, but with Rick Ankiel heating up there is no reason to have the youngster play through an injury. It doesn't sound like anything serious, but Rasmus will get it looked at on Monday. Expect him to return to the lineup early this week.

July 25, 2009

Colby Rasmus is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup again on Saturday. Rasmus has been slumping as of late, and this will be his second straight game on the bench.

Our View:

Rasmus may be struggling a bit, but it seems strange that he would sit two days in a row. If any news comes out about an injury, we will update his status, but for now it looks like Tony La Russa has just decided to go a different route.

July 17, 2009

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cardinals are not willing to part with rookie Colby Rasmus in a deal for oft-mentioned ace Roy Halladay.

Our View:

This is probably a smart move by the Redbirds. Rasmus has emerged on the scene the past couple months and now looks to be a front runner for the Rookie of the Year award. He has a bright future ahead of him and remains an affordable option for years. The Cardinals can't see the upside for shopping him for expensive talent that won't be around after a year and a handful of months. It's hard to disagree with that logic.

July 7, 2009

Colby Rasmus fell a triple short of a cycle on Tuesday, as the Cardinals shutout the Brewers 5-0.

Our View:

Rasmus has fast made himself worthy of an own in almost every format, and is the clear front-runner for the National League rookie of the year award.

July 5, 2009

Colby Rasmus had another big day on Sunday in the Cardinals' 10-1 win over the Reds. Rasmus went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored, and two RBI in the win.

Our View:

Rasmus has turned it on as of late, and he is starting to show the talent that has been talked about for the last several seasons. His fantasy value is climbing by the day, and he is turning into a solid everyday fantasy option.

July 4, 2009

Colby Rasmus hit a towering first inning home run on the Fourth of July, his second in four games, but it wasn't enough, as the Reds beat the Cardinals 5-2.

Our View:

Rasmus is emerging as legitimate power threat in the Cardinals outfield, and is decent option for your third or fourth outfielder in most formats.

July 1, 2009

Colby Rasmus hit a walk-off home run for the Cardinals on Wednesday, as the Birds on Bat beat the Giants 2-1 in 10 innings.

Our View:

It was Rasmus' first homer since June 10. Colby still isn't consistent enough, nor does he play enough, to warrant a roster add in many formats, but he should be at the forefront of your mind as the season progresses, as his numbers will likely get better and his playing time continue to increase.

June 30, 2009

Colby Rasmus could be available to pinch-hit for tonight's home game against the Giants, according to ESPN. He is dealing with a hiatal hernia.

Our View:

There is belief Rasmus could return to the lineup tomorrow. He leads all NL rookies with seven homers and 28 RBI.

June 29, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Colby Rasmus has been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View:

The source states Rasmus is likely to return to the diamond Wednesday, but the Cardinals will be very cautious with their prized rookie outfielder.

June 29, 2009

Colby Rasmus is out of tonight's lineup against the Giants while dealing with a stomach ailment, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Rasmus was placed under general anesthesia today while doctors examined him. The ailment may be caused by him eating late at night after games to replenish his body. He is currently struggling at a plate in a 2-for-24 slump, and could use a day off anyway.

June 25, 2009

Colby Rasmus is out of the Cardinals' lineup for their Thursday matinee in New York against the Mets. Rick Ankiel will patrol center, while Skip Schumaker moves from second base to left field.

Our View:

With ace lefty Johan Santana on the hill for the Mets today, Cards' manager Tony La Russa has made the obvious decision to keep the left-handed hitting Rasmus on the bench. Colby is putting up a heck of a rookie campaign, and he holds decent fantasy value as he figures to continue to improve as the season wears on.

June 17, 2009

Colby Rasmus was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a triple in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Tigers. It was the first triple of the 22-year-old's major league career.

Our View:

Rasmus' average is up to .271, despite hovering around .250 most of the season. He was just 1-for-12 in his last three starts.

June 17, 2009

Colby Rasmus grounded into his first double play of the season on Tuesday according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

This is significant because Rasmus was the last player in Major League Baseball with enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title to ground into a double play in 2009. It speaks volumes to his speed that he was able to stay out of a twin killing for so long. He is probably ready for an add in your league if he isn't already owned.

June 12, 2009

Colby Rasmus remains out of the Cardinals' lineup Friday while recovering from a bruised heel, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View:

The injury is minor, and there is belief Rasmus could return to action Saturday.

June 12, 2009

Colby Rasmus is not in the Cardinals lineup for a second consecutive day on Friday due to a bruised left heel according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

So at least manager Tony La Russa actually has a reason to bench his quickly improving, slugging young outfielder this time. If by chance Colby isn't already owned in your league, you would be wise to snatch him up now.

June 11, 2009

Colby Rasmus is not in the Cardinals lineup today against the Marlins.

Our View:

Despite Rasmus' three-run homer yesterday, he is not playing today. Do not question the ways of Tony La Russa.

June 10, 2009

Colby Rasmus went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored as St. Louis defeated Florida 13-4 on Wednesday.

Our View:

Rasmus has shown a lot of improvement in the past few weeks, but the offense around him as limited his fantasy production. As those bats start to wake back up, they scored a season-high 13 runs tonight, Rasmus' numbers should see a spike.

June 1, 2009

Colby Rasmus was solid in Monday's 5-3 loss to the Reds at Busch Stadium as he went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored.

Our View:

The rookie collected his sixth homer of the season. He needed to get off to a good start in June, as he hit a dismal .212 over 85 at-bats in May.

May 26, 2009

Colby Rasmus was 2-for-5 with a solo homer in the Cardinals' 8-1 win over Milwaukee on Tuesday night.

Our View:

The rookie phenom has struggled at the plate this season, but has shown flashes of his ability. There has been a lot of pressure on him to perform with key injuries to the Cardinal offense, which has likely contributed to his struggles. Until he puts it together at the plate, he's no more than an NL-only option. But the power stroke seems to be emerging.

May 20, 2009

Colby Rasmus commented on his power surge as he hit three homers over a five-day span, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The rookie said, "I am just swinging as hard as I can and trying to get good pitches to hit. That is about all it comes down to. That is what I have always done. That Is what I have always been taught."

Our View:

Rasmus is doing a good job right now while helping fill the void in the outfield with both Rick Ankiel and Ludwick on the shelf. Ankiel could be activated from the DL as early as today, but Rasmus should still see a fair share of action.

May 19, 2009

Colby Rasmus crushed his fourth homer of the season on Tuesday in the Cardinals' 3-0 win over the Cubs. The two-run shot was his lone hit in three trips.

Our View:

Picked by many to be 2009's Rookie of the Year, Rasmus is starting to show owners why. Looks like all he needed was some consistent playing time. He'll see it until the rest of the Redbird outfield gets healthy, but if the team was smart they would edge out Chris Duncan and let Rasmus play every day. He has four homers and 15 RBI in staggered starts and that doesn't include a two-run bomb that was washed away by a rain out.

May 18, 2009

Colby Rasmus went deep again on Monday, but the Cardinals lost to the Brewers 8-4. Rasmus was 1-for-3 with the homer, a run scored, and two RBI.

Our View:

Rasmus has excelled in the absence of Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick, and it looks like regular playing time was exactly what he needed to get hot. He is super-talented, and he should see more regular playing time if he keeps hitting the ball. He is a strong play in NL-only leagues, and he is a decent play in mixed leagues until Ankiel and Ludwick return.

May 14, 2009

Colby Rasmus only had one hit on Thursday, but it just so happened to be a two-run home run. The Cardinals won the game 5-1 with Rasmus contributing two RBI and a run scored.

Our View:

Rasmus is making the most of his playing time with Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick out with injuries. This guy could be really good as the season goes on, and he is a player to watch in fantasy circles.

May 10, 2009

Colby Rasmus went 2-for-5 with two RBI, a run scored, and a double in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Reds. He knocked in the game-winning run in the tenth inning off of Francisco Cordero.

Our View:

Rasmus is off to a somewhat sluggish start, but he's seeing more playing time with Rick Ankiel on the DL. He has two bunts for singles in each of his last two games, and he should continue to improve as he gains more experience throughout his rookie season.

May 2, 2009

Outfielder Colby Rasmus hit the first home run of his career on Saturday. It was a solo shot off of Shairon Martis of the Nationals.

Our View:

Rasmus hit 29 homers at Double-A in 2007, and we figure the 22-year-old rookie will develop more pop in the years to come. The first one is always the toughest, right?

April 7, 2009

Colby Rasmus was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in his major-league debut on Tuesday night. He batted second, right in front of Albert Pujols, and played in right field.

Our View:

Tuesday's scenario figures to be the plot line for Rasmus this season. Though most of his starts figure to be in left, in favor of Chris Duncan, the second spot in the order is the perfect fit for his mixture of speed and gap-to-gap power.

April 7, 2009

Colby Rasmus is set for his season debut with the Cardinals tonight against the Pirates at Busch Stadium, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

It is uncertain where he will play, but skipper Tony LaRussa confirmed that he will make his debut. Rasmus hit .280 in spring training.

April 3, 2009

Colby Rasmus has made the Cardinals' opening day roster, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Manager Tony LaRussa said, "He has improved literally every week in spring training."

Our View:

The elite prospect is expected to play 3-4 days per week and is worth targeting as a sleeper in mixed league play.

April 2, 2009

Colby Rasmus was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored in St. Louis' 6-3 win over Florida on Thursday.

Our View:

Rasmus seems too talented to leave off the 25-man roster. As such, it's likely he will split starts in left field with Chris Duncan. The kid's only 22, and is sure to make some gaffes, but he's still worth keeping an eye on in deeper mixed leagues.

March 28, 2009

Colby Rasmus went 2-for-3 with a triple, two walks, two runs and his fourth stolen base of the spring.

Our View:

Rasmus has picked up his performance of late and appears to have locked down a spot on St. Louis' roster. While he won't play every day, he still has a ceiling that few can match and is worth a late-round flyer in most formats.

March 21, 2009

Uber-prospect Colby Rasmus had a huge day Saturday, going 5-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. He raised his spring average to a respectable .293.

Our View:

It appears Rasmus will make the team and share time in left field. Not the best scenario for one of the games top prospects, but at least he's getting big league at-bats. Give him a year until he makes a true fantasy impact. Unless of course he takes off and wins the job outright after the first month.

March 17, 2009

Colby Rasmus is expected to make the opening day roster and see time in left field, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Strauss expects Rasmus to play about four days per week, with Chris Duncan and others fighting for the remaining playing time.

Our View:

This is a little surprising given that Rasmus has struggled this spring and Duncan has excelled. Rasmus is one of the best prospects in the game, but don't expect him to be a big fantasy contributor right away.

March 11, 2009

MLB.com reports that Colby Rasmus missed his second straight game on Wednesday due to a sore hamstring.

Our View:

Rasmus has been given every chance this spring to show he belongs, but through 33 at-bats, he holds a mediocre .242 batting average with no home runs. The injury likely sets him back, but so do Skip Schumaker's struggles at second base. If Schumaker is moved back to the outfield, Rasmus is almost a lock to start the season in the minors.

March 10, 2009

Outfielder Colby Rasmus did not play in the Cardinals' 5-2 win over Detroit Tuesday and is not expected to play Wednesday after tweaking a hamstring, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Our View:

The report did not state when or to what extent Rasmus injured his hamstring, other than to say it happened "slightly." Barring some unforseen catastrophe, it appears Rasmus will not be impeded long in his quest for an outfield spot.

March 7, 2009

Colby Rasmus was 1-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, and a strikeout as the Cardinals beat Houston 5-1 on Saturday. They were his first RBI of the spring.

Our View:

Rasmus was dropped to ninth in the order, which may be a possibility for him if he makes the roster. The Cardinals like to use a hitter in the nine-hole, while trying to create a type of duel-leadoff threat. Rasmus leads all major leaguers in innings and at bats this dpring. He has eight hits in 32 at bats.

February 2, 2009

Tony LaRussa says that if Colby Rasmus appears ready for the majors this spring, other outfielders will get pushed aside to accomodate his spot on the roster, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

The Cardinals have a lot of depth in the outfield, so they may be looking to trade someone to clear space for Rasmus. If he were to become a starter this season, the young outfielder could bat leadoff in St. Louis.

January 29, 2009

Colby Rasmus is a future franchise starter in center field, but may start the 2009 campaign in the minors if he does not dazzle in spring training as the Cardinals' outfield is currently crowded with Ryan Ludwick, Rick Ankiel and Skip Schumaker, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Joe Mather is still in the mix as well.

Our View:

There remains belief that the club will deal one of their outfielders to make room for Rasmus, though. Rasmus has the skills to bat leadoff when he joins the Cards.

January 18, 2009

Colby Rasmus has added bulk this offseason after spending a lot of time in the weight room to address what was perceived to be a slight weakness (his physical strength), according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Rasmus will certainly play a major role for the Cardinals at some point in 2009 and it might even happen as early as April. Keep an eye on how the Cardinals outfield situation plays out before you invest heavily in this highly regarded youngster.

January 9, 2009

Skipper Tony LaRussa commented on Colby Rasmus, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. LaRussa said, "We do have Colby coming. He's got the ability that when he's ready to play he could shove a guy aside. If there as a deal that was helpful to our club involving one of our outfielders it seems like that would be a good move to make and push Colby. I think he's ready to be pushed. I would have no problem pushing Colby because he's got exciting ability."

Our View:

LaRussa added that he thinks the prized outfielding prospect is special enough that he could "elbow" someone out of a job, and his ability is seasoned to the point that he'd merit consideration as a leadoff hitter.
