Newsbreakers

November 18, 2009

Rob Johnson will not need surgery for inflammation and a minor bone spur in his elbow, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View:

The veteran already had three surgeries during the offseason. Johnson remains hopeful of being ready to participate at the start of spring training. He will be given a chance to compete for the No. 1 role at catcher if healthy.

Rob Johnson is feeling great following surgery on his right hip, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Everything went well, and Johnson is actually looking forward to having the same procedure on his left hip. He is hopeful of being ready to participate at the start of spring training and compete for the lead role at catcher.

MLB.com is reporting that Mariners' catcher Rob Johnson is scheduled to undergo a number of different surgeries this offseason. Johnson needs surgery on his hip, his elbow, and his wrist.

Our View:

Sounds like a fun winter for Johnson. The hip surgery is similar to the procedure that A-Rod had, and Johnson is expected to have it done at the same facility. The other surgeries are expected to be minor, but it is still rough looking at three surgeries in a short period of time. Johnson is Felix Hernandez's personal catcher, so he needs to be healthy for next season.

Rob Johnson has been activated from the bereavement list, according to TSN. The Mariners designated Guillermo Quiroz for assignment as the corresponding move.

Our View:

Johnson was away from the club while attending to an undisclosed family emergency. Johnson is only hitting .202 (with no homers) over 99 at-bats with Seattle this season, and does not hold fantasy value outside of deeper AL-only leagues.

June 13, 2009

Rob Johnson has been placed on the bereavement list to deal with a family emergency, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Johnson is only hitting .202 with no homers over 99 at-bats with Seattle, and he won't be missed in fantasy leagues while away from the team.

June 11, 2009

Rob Johnson, who is recovering from a foot injury, hopes to return to the diamond Friday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Johnson is only hitting .188 over 96 at-bats with Seattle this season, and should not be considered for fantasy duty when he returns.

May 17, 2009

The AP reports that catcher Rob Johnson left Sunday's game against the Red Sox with a bruised index and middle fingers. He was replaced by Kenji Johjima.

Our View:

Johnson is still the No. 2 catcher for the Mariners and has no fantasy value. He remains the catcher of the future, but he is not expected to make much of an impact this season.

April 16, 2009

With Kenji Johjima being placed on the 15-day DL and out two to three weeks with a strained hamstring, Rob Johnson will assume the role of starting catcher until Johjima's return.

Our View:

While mixed-leaguers likely need not pay attention, those in AL-only leagues wouldn't be crazy to give Johnson a look for the time being, as he hit .305 in Triple-A Tacoma last season with nine home runs and seven stolen bases. He's 3-for-10 with a double thus far in 2009.

March 2, 2009

Catcher Rob Johnson was 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored as the Mariners beat the White Sox 5-3 on Monday.

Our View:

The 25-year-old is hoping to supplant Jeff Clement as the complement to Kenji Johjima this season. Clement as yet to get a hit and continues to strike out at a high rate, meaning Johnson's odds are improving. He is hitting .571 this spring.
