Newsbreakers

October 20, 2009

The Sporting News has named Phillies pitcher J.A. Happ and White Sox third baseman Gordon Beckham its National League and American League rookies of the year, respectively, according to MLB.com's Noah Coslov.

Our View:

These are not the "official" rookie of the year awards, however. Those will be awarded after the conclusion of the postseason by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Congratulations to both Happ and Beckham.

October 18, 2009

Philly.com is reporting that rookie pitcher J.A. Happ will remain in the bullpen for the remainder of the NLCS. The team will go with Joe Blanton as their Game 4 starter.

Our View:

Happ hasn't been good in the postseason, either as a starter or reliever, so this isn't a big surprise. He will likely be used to get lefties out in this series, but it remains to be seen if he will be able to do so.

October 12, 2009

J.A. Happ lasted only three innings in record low tempratures in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Rockies. He allowed five hits, two walks, three runs, and struck out four.

Our View:

It certainly wasn't the performance that he had dreamt up, but his offense was able to back him up and keep him from taking the loss. Happ elected not to where long sleeves despite near-freezing tempratures.

October 10, 2009

Phillies' rookie J.A. Happ will get the ball fo Sunday's Game 3 match-up with the Rockies, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Todd Zolecki. The game was supposed to be played on Saturday, but weather problems force it to Sunday.

Our View:

We thought something was up when Pedro said he didn't know if he would be starting anymore, and it looks like he won't be. Happ may be in line to be the NL Rookie of the Year, and his 12-4 record and 2.93 ERA are both outstanding for any rookie. We will see how he responds in his frst postseason.

October 10, 2009

The Philadelphia Inquirer is repoting that rookie J.A. Happ is the favorite to start Game 4 in Denver. Happ said he was happy the way his leg responded during threatment yesterday and he is fully ready to go..

Our View:

Happ's leg is fine, and it looks like Joe Blanton is the odd-man out of the rotation in this series. Happ earned this start with his play this season, and he looks like another potential championship addition to an already loaded team.

October 9, 2009

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Phillies' pitcher J.A. Happ had a meeting with manager Charlie Manuel after Thursday's game in which Happ told Manuel that he would be ready to pitch as the starter or out of the bullpen for the team's Game 3 match-up against the Rockies. Happ left the game after being hit by a line drive on his leg.

Our View:

Happ wants the ball for Game 3, but it sounds like Manuel will choose between Joe Blanton and Pedro Martinez. As good as he was in the regular season, it's hard to believe that Happ won't start in this series, but it is starting to look that way. Pedro still looks to have the inside track on Game 3, but we will let you know when the decision is made.

October 8, 2009

J.A. Happ was forced out of Thursday's NLDS game after being hit on the shin by a ground ball.

Our View:

X-rays on Happ's leg were negative, so the Phillies dodged a bullet there, but he probably won't start Game 3. With Joe Blanton and Happ both pitching in relief in Game 2, Pedro Martinez will likely get the call. Happ threw several warm-up pitches after being hit by the ball, but he had a severe limp in his plant leg and couldn't continue. Expect him to be available out of the bullpen for the rest of the series, as he seemingly just has a nasty bruise.

October 4, 2009

J.A. Happ pitched two innings in a playoff tuneup on Sunday against the Marlins and allowed two runs on four hits and a walk. The Phillies eventually won the game 7-6 in ten innings.

Our View:

Happ had a fantastic rookie year, finishing with a 12-4 record and 2.93 ERA. He will work out of the bullpen for the Phillies in the playoffs until they have a need for a fourth starter.

September 29, 2009

J.A. Happ wasn't great on Tuesday, but he was good enough for his 12th win. The rookie allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings, while striking out six.

Our View:

Happ looks like a lock to win the Rookie of the Year award in the NL with his 12 wins, 2.85 ERA and ability to carry the Phillies rotation earlier in the season when they were without Pedro Martinez and Cliff Lee and while Cole Hamels struggling.

September 29, 2009

When asked if J.A. Happ could be used as a closer in the postseason, Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee replied, "He probably could, and I wouldn't hesitate to use him in that role in the bullpen," according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:

He also mentioned Pedro Martinez and Joe Blanton as possibilities beyond Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge. Happ is the only one of the starters with significant experience out of the bullpen.

September 24, 2009

J.A. Happ picked up a win in his return to the mound against the Brewers on Thursday. Happ went 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out seven.

Our View:

The Phillies need their rookie to get healthy before the postseason, and he looked just fine tonight. He figures to be in the postseason rotation if he is healthy, so he will be closely evaluated over his next few starts.

September 22, 2009

According to MLBlogs.com, rookie J.A. Happ is expected to start on Thursday against the Brewers.

Our View:

Happ was pulled from his last start after just three innings for precautionary reasons. He has been dealing with a strained rib muscle that kept him out of two outings already and the Phillies didn't want to take any chances with him. He appears to be fine now though and is on track to take the hill Thursday.

September 18, 2009

J.A. Happ was pulled from Friday's start after the third inning as a precaution, according to David Murphy's (Philadelphia Daily News) twitter page.

Our View:

Happ has been recovering from a strained muscle in his ribcage, and may have tweaked the injury. The Phillies are yet to update his status.

September 17, 2009

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that J.A. Happ threw a successful 20-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday and will start Friday against the Braves.

Our View:

Happ is dealing with a strained muscle in his ribcage that he injured before a scheduled start on Labor Day, but is healthy enough to take the mound once again. He's a must start in fantasy leagues, but has missed his last two outings and could be a bit sluggish.

September 16, 2009

The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that Phillies' starter J.A. Happ is scheduled to throw another bullpen session on Wednesday. Happ is expected to make his first start since September 6 at some point this week, with Friday being the most likely day.

Our View:

Happ sounded pretty sure that he would start this week, so barring a setback in the bullpen session today he should be good to go. Friday has been the target date for the last week or so, but we will keep you updated when the team announces his actual return date.

September 14, 2009

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Phillies' rookie pitcher J.A. Happ threw a successful 55-pitch bullpen session on Monday morning. Happ is hoping to be able to return to the mound on Friday.

Our View:

The oblique injury is a tricky one, but it sounds like Happ is confident he will be ready to go by Friday. We will likely get more info tomorrow when he can tell how sore he is, but it looks good that he will get a start this week.

September 12, 2009

J.A. Happ is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Monday, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Andy Martino. Happ is still nursing an oblique strain.

Our View:

This is the first step in a return for Happ, but it sounds like he still might miss another start. Stay tuned for an update on his status, but the Phils aren't going to rush their rookie back until he is 100 percent.

September 11, 2009

J.A. Happ could miss a third start due to the oblique strain that has shelved him since the beginning of the week, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:

Skipper Charlie Manuel noted that Happ is improving, but feels he is 50/50 to make his next scheduled start. He threw lightly off of flat ground in right field today, and veteran hurler Jamie Moyer would likely make another start in his place if needed.

September 8, 2009

J.A. Happ will "definitely" miss his next start as he deals with an oblique strain, according to David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:

The world just got a little more Jamie Moyer in it. Expect the Phils to treat Happ with kid gloves this month as they get their lineup and roster squared away for the playoffs. No timetable is available yet for his return.

September 8, 2009

According to the Courier-Post, Phillies' starter J.A. Happ is being listed as day-to-day after missing his scheduled start on Monday due to an oblique strain. Happ could make his next scheduled start if the injury is improved.

Our View:

The Phils aren't going to mess around with this injury, so Happ won't pitch again until he is 100 percent. The good news is that the injury is being called minor, so he could be 100 percent by this weekend. We will keep you updated on his status as it gets closer to his next start.

September 7, 2009

Phillies' beat writer Todd Zolecki is reporting on his Twitter page that starting pitcher J.A. Happ has been scratched from his scheduled start on Monday due to a mild strain of his right oblique. Veteran Jamie Moyer will make the start in Happ's place.

Our View:

The injury to Happ doesn't sound too serious, but there has been no update as to when he will pitch again. We will keep you updated on his status, as the rookie is 10-4 with a 2.77 ERA this season.

September 2, 2009

J.A. Happ allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings on Wednesday. He fanned seven but took the loss as the Phillies fell 4-0 to the Giants.

Our View:

Happs falls to 10-4 on the season after Wednesday's dud, and the outing broke a string of six consecutive quality starts. His ERA jumped from 2.63 to 2.77.

August 27, 2009

J.A. Happ went the distance on Thursday night, but unfortunately for Philadelphia it came in an eight-inning loss after Happ surrendered two late runs, as the Pirates won 3-2 at home.

Our View:

Now even non-closers are blowing games for the Phils. The loss "dropped" Happ to 10-3 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.

August 27, 2009

MLB.com reports that the Phillies are monitoring the workload of rookie starter J.A. Happ.

Our View:

The team is keeping an eye out for signs of fatigue, as Happ has already thrown 135.2 innings this season. His career high (set last season) is 169.2, and there is the possibility that he could tire down the stretch. Still, the team is impressed with his stamina thus far.

August 22, 2009

J.A. Happ shut down the Mets on Saturday as the Phillies dispatched New York by a score of 4-1. Happ went seven innings and allowed one run on eight hits while walking two and striking out one.

Our View:

Happ cut down on the walks tonight, and he showed that he is very tough to beat when he doesn't beat himself. With the Phillies' offense backing him, Happ should keep the wins coming as the season wears on. He is 10-2 now, and he is a very good pitching option in all leagues.

August 16, 2009

J.A. Happ held the Braves to one run on three hits and six walks over 7.2 innings Sunday. He fanned three and earned his ninth win by topping the Braves 4-1.

Our View:

Happ did well to only let one run cross the plate, but the six walks are concerning. It tied his highest mark this season and he has now walked ten in his last two outings. If he repeats that total in another start, don't expect the outcome to be so fortunate.

August 11, 2009

J.A. Happ was solid if unspectacular on Tuesday night. The Phils' young lefty allowed just two runs in six innings, but did walk four batters. He took a no-decision as the Phillies won 4-3 in 12 innings at Wrigley Field.

Our View:

So far, so good for the Phillies' decision to keep him in the rotation over veteran lefty Jamie Moyer. The pressure has to be mounting on him to justify the team's decision, however.

August 6, 2009

According to MLB.com, J.A. Happ will remain in the rotation, despite the eventual addition of Pedro Martinez.

Our View:

"Happ's not going anywhere. He's not going out of the rotation," GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He deserves to stay in the rotation. He has pitched very well. He's one of our most effective starters." This is great news for Happ owners, as his value would have taken a serious hit if he was moved back to the pen. Breath easy and start him every five days.

August 5, 2009

J.A. Happ was masterful Wednesday night. The 26-year-old lefty put together one of the better starts in all of baseball this season, striking out ten Rockies, while allowing only four hits, in a complete game shutout as the Phillies won at home 7-0.

Our View:

How's that for possibly heading to the bullpen? On a night where Pedro Martinez also pitched brilliantly on the rehab trail, Happ lowered his ERA to a sterling 2.74 and his WHIP to a sparkling 1.12. The Phils are no doubt going to have a tough decision to make when Pedro is ready to join the big club, but needless to say, it won't involve casting Happ off to the bullpen.

August 1, 2009

J.A. Happ could be headed to the bullpen once Pedro Martinez joins the Phillies' rotation, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The rookie lefty is slated to start next Wednesday.

Our View:

The other options for bullpen work are Martinez and Jamie Moyer, and it won't be surprising if Happ gets the short straw. Moyer may have saved himself with his excellent July.

July 29, 2009

Making his first start after Philadelphia declined to trade him for Roy Halladay, the most untouchable man in America since Al Capone gave up two runs in six innings, as the Phillies lost 6-2 in Arizona.

Our View:

Happ not only is not a Blue Jay, but is now only the third best lefty in the Phillies rotation after the team got Cliff Lee on Wednesday. He has now dropped two straight decisions after winning his first seven this season.

July 24, 2009

J.A. Happ was rocked for five earned runs on 10 hits over six innings in Friday's 8-1 loss to the Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park. He had no walks and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

Happ suffered his first loss of the season, as he is now 7-1. He still has a 2.97 ERA, and Happ should be able to bounce back fine.

July 24, 2009

The Phillies are apparently willing to include J.A. Happ in a potential deal for Roy Halladay, according to Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman.

Our View:

The Phillies are determined to pull off the blockbuster without including top prospect Kyle Drabek. It seems a little curious they would be more willing to part with Happ than Drabek, since Happ has never undergone Tommy John surgery and has already proven himself in the major leagues, but prospect mania has gripped baseball in 2009. This deal would also weaken them considerably more this season than dealing Drabek would, as Happ has put up sterling numbers in 11 starts, going 7-0 with a 2.68 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.

July 19, 2009

J.A. Happ was sharp again on Sunday, allowing no runs in seven innings as he cruised to his seventh victory in the Phils 5-0 win at Florida.

Our View:

Happ continues to pitch brilliantly in '09, and is finally fulfilling his enormous potential. You might be able to buy low on him in more casual leagues because of his lack of name recognition.

July 12, 2009

J.A. Happ had another solid outing for the Phillies on Sunday. He held the Pirates to just one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings for his sixth win of the season.

Our View:

Happ is now 6-0 on the season with a sparkling 2.90 ERA. Since joining the rotation on May 23rd he has seven quality starts in ten trips to the mound. He's pitched well enough to be employed in all fantasy formats.

July 7, 2009

J.A. Happ was solid again on Tuesday, allowing three runs in seven innings while striking out six, but took a no-decision as Brad Lidge allowed the Reds to plate a run in the ninth for a 4-3 victory.

Our View:

Happ continues to pitch incredibly well, and has now gone seven innings in each of his last three starts. He has an ERA of 3.04 and a 1.20 WHIP, helping to stabilize a struggling Philly rotation. He is a solid option in every format.

July 2, 2009

J.A. Happ only allowed two earned runs on seven hits over seven innings in Thursday's 5-2 loss at Atlanta. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Happ pitched well tonight, and it is a shame he was forced to take a no-decision due to poor run support from his teammates. He has allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last three starts, but only collected one win over the span.

June 27, 2009

J.A. Happ was in a groove on Saturday. The Phillies hurler went the distance, shutting out the Blue Jays in a 10-0 win. He allowed just five hits and did not walk a batter as he improved to 5-0 on the season.

Our View:

The crafty lefty stayed perfect on the season with a masterful performance against the Jays. Since moving from the pen to the rotation Happ has four quality starts in seven outings and holds a very respectable 3.00 ERA on the season. He seems to give the Phils a chance to win every time he takes the mound.

June 20, 2009

J.A. Happ pitched well enough to win on Saturday, but his bullpen let him down as the Phillies fell to the Orioles 6-5. Happ went six innings and allowed two runs on ten hits while walking four and striking out four.

Our View:

Happ got himself out of a lot of trouble throughout the night, but in the end he only let up two runs in his six innings. Still not a dominating performance, but he should have gotten the win tonight.

June 14, 2009

J.A. Happ struggled a bit on Sunday, but he was bailed out by his offense as the Phillies beat the Red Sox 11-6. Happ went 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits while walking six and striking out three. He did not factor into the decision.

Our View:

Happ was not in control today, and his six walks in 5.2 innings is far too high. His offense crushed the ball, so he didn't get hit with the loss, but this wasn't one of his better showings. Happ has been putting up decent numbers, and is serviceable in NL-only leagues.

June 4, 2009

J.A. Happ tossed seven shutout innings in the Phillies 5-1 win over the Padres on Wednesday. He allowed only four hits, walked two, and struck out four as he improved to 4-0 on the season.

Our View:

The left-hander has been solid through his three starts after starting the season as a reliever. He threw 112 pitches tonight and he looks to have solidified his spot in the rotation

May 29, 2009

J.A. Happ allowed three runs on three hits and three walks over 5.1 innings on Friday and improved to 3-0 on the season. He fanned five as the Phillies nipped the Nationals 5-4.

Our View:

Happ has been very good since his move from the bullpen. Now that he's starting he's a solid option in NL-only leagues and an intriguing one in mixed formats. He has a very respectable 3.00 ERA on the season so far.

May 23, 2009

J.A. Happ was great in his debut start against the Yankees on Saturday, yielding two runs off six hits and zero walks with four strikeouts, though he was unable to get a win after Brad Lidge blew the game in the ninth inning.

Our View:

Happ was fine as a spot-starter at the end of last season and logged a great first start after an effective first month and a half in middle relief thus far in 2009. While the Phillies are reportedly in the market to add another starter, Happ will remain in the rotation for the time being and be given a chance to stick. He should definitely be added in AL-only and deep mixed leagues, and can even be given a look in more standard leagues as long as he holds a spot on a Phillies team that should provide nice support.

May 19, 2009

According to MLB.com, J.A. Happ will replace Chan Ho Park in the Phillies' struggling rotation.

Our View:

Park has been awful this season with a 7.08 ERA in seven starts, while Happ has been very effective out of the bullpen. The team feels he'll give them a better chance to win than the aging import. Happ has a 2.49 ERA in 21.2 innings this season and may be worth a look in NL-only leagues.

May 14, 2009

J.A. Happ will start the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader against the Nationals, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:

Happ fired 12 strikeouts and holds a 1.11 WHIP over 15.1 innings of relief, and is worth fantasy consideration with a favorable match-up against Washington (11-21).

May 13, 2009

MLB.com reports that J.A. Happ is likely to get the start in the night game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Our View:

Happ has been pitching effectively out of the bullpen this season and should have the conditioning to give the team five innings on Saturday. He was in competition for the fifth spot in the rotation in spring training, but lost out to Chan Ho Park.

April 3, 2009

Lefthander J.A. Happ has been named to the Phillies' 25-man roster, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:

The 26-year-old Happ lost out on the fifth spot in the rotation to Chan Ho Park, but he will serve in the Philies bullpen, though it is not determined in what capacity.

March 23, 2009

J.A. Happ surrendered two runs on five hits in five innings against the Yankees on Monday. He walked three and struck out three.

Our View:

Happ's fantasy value will greatly depend upon his role with the Phillies. He's still being considered for a spot in the rotation, but if veteran Chan Ho Park impresses, he could just as easily wind up as a lefty specialist in the bullpen.

January 16, 2009

J.A. Happ will be aiming for a rotation spot with the Phillies in spring training, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View:

Happ will be competing against Chan Ho Park, Kyle Kendrick and Carlos Carrasco, among others, for the fifth spot in the rotation. He held a decent 1.33 WHIP over 31.2 innings in 2008, and could be worth a look in NL-only leagues if he nails down the job with the defending champs.
