Newsbreakers

October 4, 2009

Alberto Gonzalez drove in the winning run in the 15th inning for a 2-1 win over the Braves in the regular season's final game.

Our View:

Gonzalez was 2-for-6 in the day and the RBI was his 33rd of the season. He finishes 2009 with a .265 average.

July 21, 2009

Alberto Gonzalez's fourth inning fielder's choice and RBI was all the Nationals needed on Tuesday, as John Lannan easily disposed of a punchless Mets lineup, while Oliver Perez stood helplessly by as Nats walked all over the basepaths.

Our View:

Gonzalez is batting .308 in limited playing time for the Nationals this season, and could be someone to watch in the future.

June 14, 2009

Alberto Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Rays. He is now hitting .319 on the season.

Our View:

Christian Guzman remains the starting shortstop in Washington, but Gonzalez's play this season is probably good enough that the Nationals can shop Guzman as the deadline nears.

June 5, 2009

Alberto Gonzalez went 1-for-1 with an RBI single in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Mets at Nationals Park.

Our View:

He entered the game as a pinch-hitter, and was Washington's only source of scoring. He is capable of solid production, but his fantasy value is limited as he does not play regularly.

May 30, 2009

Alberto Gonzalez was called up to the Nationals on Saturday, according to the Washington Post.

Our View:

Gonzalez started the season with the Nats, but he made six errors in just 98 innings. He hit .271 in 48 major league at bats and hit .311 in 90 Triple-A at bats. He will be used primarily as Christian Guzman's backup.

April 29, 2009

The Nationals optioned infielder Alberto Gonzalez to Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday.

Our View:

Gonzalez performed decently while Cristian Guzman (hamstring) was out, but the Nationals will now store him in the minors along with the rest of their scrubs.

February 19, 2009

Alberto Gonzalez signed a one-year deal with the Nationals on Thursday, according to the SportsTicker. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Our View:

Gonzalez batted .347 in 17 games for the Nats last year after being acquired from the Yankees. Despite the fine performance, he's nothing more than a backup infielder who possesses very little pop or speed. So even if he manages to win a roster spot this spring, there isn't much potential here, even in NL-only leagues.
