Newsbreakers

November 2, 2009

ESPN's Jayson Stark is reporting on Twitter that Major League Baseball has given the Yankees permission to add Ramiro Pena to the World Series roster in place of the injured Melky Cabrera.

Our View:

Cabrera will now be unavailable for the rest of the series thanks to his hamstring injury, and Pena will add some much-needed depth to the bench. Brett Gardner is likely to take over in center for the rest of the series.

September 4, 2009

Ramiro Pena went 1-for-3 with a double in tonight's 6-0 loss at Toronto.

Our View:

Pena recorded the Yankees' lone hit against ace hurler Roy Halladay. Pena started at shortstop as Derek Jeter was given the day off to rest.

August 21, 2009

The New York Post reports the Yankees have optioned infielder Ramiro Pena to Triple-A.

Our View:

Pena was moved to make room for reliever Damaso Marte, but will likely return to the club when rosters expand in September. Pena is a good glove man, but is not much of an offensive threat.

August 9, 2009

Ramiro Pena has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

Our View:

Pena has seven RBI in 86 major league at-bats this season.

July 1, 2009

Ramiro Pena has been optioned to Triple-A by the Yankees, according to the Associated Press. He was moved to make room for Eric Hinske on the roster.

Our View:

The rookie infielder was only hitting .267 with no homers over 86 at-bats with New York, and shouldn't be missed in fantasy leagues while working on his skills in the minors.

May 25, 2009

Ramiro Pena will start at shortstop in today's game at Texas, according to the Star-Ledger.

Our View:

Derek Jeter will work in the DH role. Pena only has one hit over his last 10 at-bats, and does not merit fantasy consideration outside of the deepest of leagues.

April 4, 2009

Ramiro Pena beat out Angel Berroa for the Yankees' utility infielder spot, according Newsday.

Our View:

Pena has never played above Double-A and he struck out 13 times in 65 at-bats this spring. He hit .277/.329/.338 in his tryout for the big league club, and hit .266 at Double-A last season. Frankly, we're a little shocked he'll be in pin stripes on opening day. He figures to get optioned back down once Alex Rodriguez is ready to go.
