Newsbreakers

September 6, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Padres' pitcher Sean Gallagher was in the clubhouse on Saturday just one day after making a minor league rehab appearance. The team is expected to activate Gallagher either Sunday or Monday.

Our View:

Gallagher has recovered much quicker than anyone anticipated, as he was expected to be out for the season. The Padres will work him out of the bullpen for the remainder of the year, but he will have a chance to earn a rotation spot in Spring Training next year.

September 1, 2009

MLB.com reports that Sean Gallagher will begin a rehab assignment on Friday.

Our View:

The Padres pitcher was expected to miss the rest of the season with a torn patella tendon in his left knee, but is recovering ahead of schedule. He will make two rehab starts before rejoining the Pads in mid-September and may be able to get in a start or two before the regular season draws to a close.

July 28, 2009

Sean Gallagher has been officially revealed as the "player to be named later" in the Padres/A's Scott Hairston deal, according to the Padres' Twitter page.

Our View:

Gallagher has been shutdown for the rest of 2009 as he recovers from a patella tendon tear in his left knee. He has been dominant in the minors throughout his career, but has a 5.80 ERA in 144.1 major league innings. Still, he is a likely candidate for the Padres 2010 rotation with a strong spring training.

July 13, 2009

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that pitcher Sean Gallagher is the "player to be named later" in the A's trade for Scott Hairston. Gallagher isn't eligible to be sent to San Diego until he comes off the DL.

Our View:

Gallagher came over to Oakland in the Rich Harden trade, and he hasn't done much in the Bay Area. He is 3-5 with the A's and he has a 6.34 ERA. He could get an opportunity in the Padres' rotation if he gets healthy, and his fantasy value will likely depend on his status with his new team.

June 7, 2009

Sean Gallagher will miss his next scheduled start with Triple-A Sacramento while nursing a minor knee injury, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Gallagher held a poor 8.16 ERA over 14.1 innings (two starts) with Oakland this season, and the 23-year-old hurler holds no fantasy value right now while working on his skills in the minors.

May 19, 2009

Sean Gallagher has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento by the Athletics, according to TSN.

Our View:

His demotion to the minors is not surprising, as he holds a dreadful 8.16 ERA and 1.95 WHIP over 14.1 innings of work (two starts). He was rocked for seven earned runs in Monday's start against the Rays.

May 18, 2009

Sean Gallagher joined the other A's starters in their May struggles as he allowed nine runs, seven earned, in 2.1 innings of work in Monday's 13-4 loss to Tampa Bay. He allowed three hits and walked five, while striking out one in the brief outing.

Our View:

Gallagher had been fairly effective in the relief role through his first four appearances this season, but he has allowed 10 earned runs in his two starts.

May 9, 2009

Sean Gallagher didn't last long on Saturday. The Blue Jays put up four runs (three earned) on ten hits against him and he took the loss, evening his record to 1-1.

Our View:

Gallagher got a rare start today and didn't look very good. He was penciled in for Brett Anderson (blister), but likely won't get the opportunity next time around after his poor showing today.

May 6, 2009

Sean Gallagher will start in place of Brett Anderson (blister) on Saturday, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Our View:

Gallagher will attempt to stake a claim to a regular turn in the rotation for the A's. In his last appearance out of the pen his fastball reached 94 mph, so he appears to have his "stuff" in shape for the challenge. Keep a close eye on him in AL-only leagues.

May 4, 2009

Sean Gallagher has been promoted by the A's from Triple-A Sacramento, according to MLB.com. Gallagher has an ERA of 8.10 for the A's s far this season.

Our View:

Gallagher should work out of the bullpen for the A's, which will prevent any fantasy value. He could start for the A's if they needed him, but right now he will work exclusively out of the pen.

April 23, 2009

The A's demoted pitcher Sean Gallagher to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. He was dealt to Oakland in the Rich Harden deal last season.

Our View:

Gallagher failed to earn the fifth starter spot in the rotation and has had virtually no work out of the bullpen. He only amassed 3.1 innings and sports a bloated 8.10 ERA and a ghastly 2.10 WHIP. He will start in Triple-A on Saturday.

April 2, 2009

Sean Gallagher has been beaten by Josh Outman for the fifth spot in the Athletics' rotation, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Gallagher would work in the bullpen if he makes the opening day roster. He held a poor 1.53 WHIP over 115.1 innings in 2008, and skipper Bob Geren felt he didn't attack the strike zone effectively in spring training.

March 29, 2009

Sean Gallagher allowed six runs on nine hits in only five innings on Sunday.

Our View:

Gallagher, who figures to be in the Oakland rotation, was berated behind closed doors by GM Billy Beane after being taken out. The 23-year-old righthander later claimed the meeting was designed to motivate him, but it merely underlies the muddled nature of the A's rotation a week before the season opens.

March 17, 2009

Sean Gallagher had a fine outing against the D-Backs Tuesday. He tossed four scoreless innings and was credited with the win.

Our View:

The former Cub, who came over in the Rich Harden deal, impressed Tuesday, but has had a rocky spring otherwise. Look for him to improve on his 5.15 ERA last year, but he's not a safe fantasy pick as he'll take some lumps along the way.

March 7, 2009

Sean Gallagher missed his start on Saturday due to illness, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Gio Gonzalez will start in his place.

Our View:

Gallagher certainly has room to improve, and at 23 it seems a good bit that he takes a positive step forward this season. However, at this point he is not a lock to be a part of the A's opening day rotation.

March 3, 2009

Sean Gallagher was roughed up a bit in his two innings of work Tuesday, allowing three hits and an earned run as the A's fell 6-4 to the Cubs.

Our View:

The 23-year-old Gallagher has never pitched more than 116 innings or posted an ERA below 4.50 in four major-league seasons. His most likely destination will be AAA Sacramento.
