SEASON

IPWSKERA

Newsbreakers

October 3, 2009

Randy Wells dominated a free-swinging Diamondbacks lineup on Saturday, striking out a career-high ten in seven scoreless innings, as Chicago won 5-0 at home.

Our View:

The start was a nice exclamation point on an excellent rookie campaign for Wells. In 27 starts this season, he went 12-10 with a 3.05 ERA. Expect him to garner a fair amount of rookie-of-the-year consideration.

September 27, 2009

Cubs rookie Randy Wells was slapped around by the light-hitting Giants on Sunday, allowing five runs on ten hits and two walks over just 5.1 innings. He fell to 11-10 on the season after the 5-1 loss.

Our View:

Wells will still be in the ROY conversation when this season is all said and done, but he hasn't helped his chances recently with two tough outings in the final month. J.A. Happ could be pulling away as Wells' season ERA is up to 3.18.

September 22, 2009

Rookie right-hander Randy Wells was electric on Tuesday against the Brewers. He allowed just one unearned run on seven hits over six innings and fanned five in the 7-2 win.

Our View:

Wells is now 11-9 on the season with a 3.00 ERA. He bounced back nicely after a rough outing last time out where he allowed five runs in just four innings. He and Philadelphia's J.A. Happ have to be front runners for the NL ROY award.

September 17, 2009

One-time rookie of the year candidate Randy Wells was pedestrian again on Thursday, walking five batters and allowing five runs in just four innings, as the Cubs lost 7-4 to Milwaukee at home.

Our View:

Wells still has a solid overall line of 10-9 with a 3.18 ERA this season, but is just 2-5 with a 4.23 ERA since August 9. Not bad, but probably not rookie of the year caliber in a league that has Tommy Hanson in it this season.

September 12, 2009

Randy Wells had a very shaky start on Saturday as he received a no-decision in the Cubs' 7-5 loss to the Reds. Wells lasted only 3.2 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits while walking three and not striking out a hitter.

Our View:

Wells had his worst start of the season today, but his defense didn't do anything to help him out. He has been very good all season, so you shouldn't worry too much about this start.

September 6, 2009

Randy Wells had another solid outing on Sunday, but unfortunately he ended up taking the loss as the Cubs fell to the Mets 4-2. Wells allowed two runs (one earned) in six innings while allowing seven hits and striking out two.

Our View:

Yet another very good outing for the rookie, but unfortunately his offense couldn't help him out. Wells has a 2.84 ERA and ten wins this season, and he is in the conversation for Rookie of the Year.

September 1, 2009

Cubs rookie Randy Wells continues to impress this season. He held the Astros to just one run on seven hits and a pair of walks over 6.2 innings in the Cubs 4-1 win on Tuesday.

Our View:

Wells fanned four on the night and lowered his ERA to 2.90. He's only had four "bad" outings this season and joins J.A. Happ at the top of the list for Rookie of the Year candidates.

August 27, 2009

Randy Wells allowed five runs on nine baserunners in 6.1 innings on Thursday, as the Cubbies lost 5-4 to the Nationals at home.

Our View:

Wells is now just 2-3 with a 3.69 ERA in August after going 5-1 with a 3.23 ERA in July. Of course, those numbers still warrant an own in every format.

August 22, 2009

Randy Wells took a hard luck loss on Friday against the Dodgers. He allowed two runs (none earned) on seven hits and two walks over 6.2 innings in the 2-1 loss.

Our View:

Wells deserved better than to see his record fall to 9-6. Still his 2.84 ERA is just one of the reasons that he's a guaranteed finalist for the Rookie of the Year award.

August 14, 2009

Randy Wells was effective on Friday for the Cubs, allowing just two runs in six innings, but didn't need to be, as the Cubbies shocked-and-awed the Pirates 17-2 at Wrigley Field.

Our View:

Wells now has nine wins and a 3.01 ERA - numbers the team surely wasn't expecting when they inserted him into their rotation in May.

August 9, 2009

Randy Wells was roughed up for seven runs (five earned) on eight hits over 5.1 innings in Sunday's 11-5 loss at Colorado. He had two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Wells was handed a loss, and had his four-game winning streak snapped. He allowed one or less earned runs in each of his previous two starts, and should be able to bounce back fine from today's nightmarish outing.

August 3, 2009

Randy Wells was in control from the hill in Monday's 4-2 win at Cincinnati, as he only issued one earned run on six hits over 7.1 innings. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Wells has won four straight starts, and has eight wins for the season. He has only allowed one run over his last two outings as well, and should remain employed in fantasy lineups for his next turn in the Cubs' rotation.

July 29, 2009

Randy Wells had the best start of his short MLB career thus far on Wednesday, dominating the Astros at Wrigley Field. The young righty pitched eight shutout innings, while striking out one and allowing just eight baserunners. The Cubs won 12-0.

Our View:

Wells has shown no letup since being inserted into the Cubs starting rotation, and is a solid candidate to buy low in more causal leagues because of his lack of name recognition. Flip a struggling name from an area of strength.

July 24, 2009

Randy Wells gave up three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Friday's 8-5 win over the Reds at Wrigley Field. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Wells earned his sixth win of the season, and is 4-1 over five starts in July. Keep him active in fantasy lineups for his next turn in the Cubs' rotation.

July 18, 2009

Randy Wells allowed four earned runs on seven hits over five innings in Saturday's 6-5 win at Washington. He had one walk and one strikeout.

Our View:

Wells did not have a solid outing, but the Cubs provided enough run support for him to claim his fifth win of the season. He recorded a win in five of his last six starts, and should remain active in fantasy lineups.

July 18, 2009

Randy Wells will start Saturday instead of scheduled Sunday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

He is going in place of the ailing Ted Lilly. Be sure to adjust your lineup as soon as possible, as Wells has been pitching very well, and it would be a shame to miss one of his starts.

July 12, 2009

Randy Wells was handed his fourth loss of the season by Ryan Ludwick and the Cardinals on Sunday night. He allowed a pair of two-run homers to Ludwick and finished with four earned in seven innings in the Cubs' 4-2 loss.

Our View:

Wells solved the great Albert Pujols (0-for-4), but couldn't handle the red hot Ludwick. He allowed seven hits and three walks and struck out four, but Ludwick did all the damage. Wells is still having a fantastic rookie campaign (2.72 ERA) and should be considered every start in all leagues.

July 6, 2009

Randy Wells improved to 4-3 on Monday after allowing two runs off seven hits and zero walks while striking out four in six innings against Atlanta.

Our View:

Wells continues to dazzle in the Cubs' rotation and has now logged fine outings in 10 of his 11 starts. He's an absolute must-own in any league at this point that should probably be started from now on until he gives you a reason not to.

July 1, 2009

Randy Wells won for the third straight start on Wednesday after going winless for his first seven of the season, and the Cubs outlasted the Pirates 4-1.

Our View:

Wells has blossomed into a legitimate fantasy option over the last month, and is pitching better than any Cubs starter. If he is still available, snatch him up.

June 26, 2009

Randy Wells pitched well in Friday's 5-4 win over the cross-town rival White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, as he only surrendered two earned runs on five hits over seven innings. He had two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:

Wells has allowed two or less earned runs in five of his last six starts, and is worth employing in fantasy lineups for his next turn in the Cubs' rotation. He has claimed a win in each of his last two outings.

June 21, 2009

Randy Wells allowed two earned runs on five hits over 6.2 innings in Sunday's 6-2 win over Cleveland at Wrigley Field. He issued one walk with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Wells earned his first career win. It took him eight starts this season to do so, despite a solid 2.57 ERA. He is worth employing in NL-only leagues for his next trip to the mound.

June 12, 2009

Young hurler Randy Wells had his first bad outing of the season for on Friday, as he lasted only 3.2 innings and surrendered four earned runs in the Cubs 7-4 loss to the Twins.

Our View:

Despite a record of 0-3, Wells has been huge for the Cubs as a rotation fill in this season. He's posted a 2.55 ERA in seven starts while striking out 32 batters in 42 innings. Teams might be starting to get the book on him, but he's still probably worth a roster spot in deeper mixed leagues and an excellent spot starting option.

June 7, 2009

Randy Wells held the Reds to two runs on seven hits and a walk over 6.2 innings, but did not factor in the decision as the Cubs eventually won 6-3 after a 14-inning marathon.

Our View:

Wells has a 1.86 ERA in six starts this season, but somehow has a record of 0-2. Tough luck and lack of offense by the Cubs have hurt him, but he's actually turned into a solid fantasy option.

June 2, 2009

Randy Wells was solid in Tuesday's 6-5 loss at Atlanta, as he only allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits over seven innings. He had no walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

He pitched great and it is a shame he had to settle for a no-decision rather than a win. He remains winless over five starts, despite a solid 1.69 ERA.

June 2, 2009

Randy Wells will make the start for the Cubs Tuesday night in Atlanta.

Our View:

Despite having no wins, Wells has been a very pleasant surprise for the Cubs. He is sporting an ERA below 2.00, and has struck out seven batters in both of his last two starts. He is a solid spot-starting option and perhaps even worth a roster spot.

May 28, 2009

Randy Wells was the tough luck loser on Thursday as the Cubs fell to the Dodgers 2-1. Wells went seven innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Our View:

Wells' record sits at 0-2 after tonight's loss, but he has been outstanding for the Cubs this season. He pitched well enough to win the game tonight, but unfortunately Randy Wolf was better. If Wells stays in the rotation he could have fantasy value, but it remains to be seen if he will.

May 16, 2009

Randy Wells still has yet to give up an earned run this season as he helped the Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Astros. Wells went six innings and did not allow a run on four hits while walking three and striking out four.

Our View:

Kevin Gregg blew the save in the ninth, but the Cubbies managed to get the win in the bottom. Wells has been outstanding for the Cubs so far this season filling in for Carlos Zambrano, and he is making his case to remain in the rotation upon Big Z's return. He could have some decent value if he stays in the rotation, but we will have to wait and see if he does.

May 15, 2009

Randy Wells will start Saturday's game against the Astros after today's outing was postponed due to rain, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Rich Harden will now pitch Sunday, and Sean Marshall's next turn will be skipped, and won't start again until next Thursday.

May 8, 2009

Randy Wells was sharp in his Major League debut on Friday, but did not factor in the decision. The rookie allowed five hits and two walks, but did not give up a run over five innings. He also struck out five in the game.

Our View:

This bodes well for the Cubs if Big Z doesn't return for a while. Wells likely won't be this good every time out, but if he's capable it's more than the Cubs could ask for.

May 8, 2009

According to MLB.com, Randy Wells will make his first Major League start tonight in place of injured starter Carlos Zambrano.

Our View:

Wells isn't a highly touted prospect, but the Cubs need a body on the mound. He did have a 2.77 ERA in five starts in Triple-A, but will likely be shipped out of town as soon as Big Z is healthy.

May 5, 2009

Randy Wells will be recalled from Triple-A Iowa to start Friday in place of the injured Carlos Zambrano, according to the Daily Herald.

Our View:

Wells holds a 2.77 ERA in five starts for Iowa, but he isn't a prospect and doesn't deserve any fantasy consideration unless you're digging really deep.
