Newsbreakers

October 25, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury could be moved to left field in 2010, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:

Ellsbury is an average defender, at best, in center field, and he could have a much larger defensive impact on the game in the tiny left field at Fenway Park. Whether or not Jason Bay returns to Boston will obviously affect this. Stay tuned.

October 10, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored the only run for the Red Sox in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Angels. Boston now trails 2-0 in the ALDS.

Our View:

Ellsbury was the only Boston position player to record multiple hits in the game and his triple gave the Sox a very brief 1-0 lead. But Jared Weaver proved too much for the rest of the lineup and Boston fell short.

October 4, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 1-for-3 with a run scored and stole his 70th base of the season in Boston's 12-7 win over the Indians on Sunday.

Our View:

The Boston speedster leads the majors with his 70 steals and will take home the title this year. Carl Crawford is still playing, but should be no threat as he's stuck at 60. Ellsbury also finishes the season with a .301 average and 94 runs scored, making him one of the league's best leadoff men.

October 1, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 and stole his 68th base on Thursday, helping the Red Sox to a 3-0 win over the Indians at home.

Our View:

His 68 stolen bases lead the major leagues, and, of course, are a big reason why he will be a great fantasy option in the outfield in 2010.

September 20, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury had a big day at the plate on Sunday in the Red Sox's 9-3 win over the Orioles. Ellsbury went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI.

Our View:

Ellsbury isn't much of a power threat, so anytime he goes deep is a nice added bonus for fantasy owners. His average is over .300, and he hasn't slowed down at all this season as he has 62 steals.

September 18, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury helped lead the Sox in tonight's 3-1 win at Baltimore, as he went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Both of his hits were singles, and he also swiped a base.

Our View:

Ellsbury has a hit in four straight games, and raised his season batting average to .302. He continues to pace the majors with 62 stolen bases.

August 28, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury is in the Red Sox's lineup for their Friday night game against the Blue Jays. Ellsbury suffered a left ankle sprain in the team's game Thursday night, but he felt good enough to play tonight.

Our View:

Ellsbury has to be a little sore still, so you may not see the blazing speed that you are used to tonight, but he should still be a safe play. If the ankle is still bothering him, it shouldn't affect him for long, so keep him in the lineup unless you have an adequate replacement on the bench.

August 27, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Jacoby Ellsbury has suffered a mild left ankle sprain during tonight's game against the White Sox, according to Mike Petraglia's (WEEI) twitter page.

Our View:

The Sox are yet to speculate how much time he may miss. The speed demon swiped 55 bases so far in 2009.

August 27, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury exited Thursday's battle against Chicago with an undisclosed injury.

Our View:

Ellsbury was assisted off the field after sliding feet-first into home plate. Rocco Baldelli replaced him in the lineup, and Ellsbury's status is yet to be updated.

August 25, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in tonight's 6-3 win over the White Sox at Fenway Park. He hit a double and two singles, and also swiped a base.

Our View:

Ellsbury notched his 55th steal of 2009, setting a new season record with the Red Sox. He passes Tommy Harper, who stole 54 bags back in 1973.

August 21, 2009

MLB.com reports that with his 54th stolen base in the first inning of Friday's game against the Yankees, Jacoby Ellsbury tied a single-season franchise record.

Our View:

Ellsbury stole the record-tying base off Yankees lefty Andy Petitte after drawing a leadoff walk. His dramatic steal of home earlier in the season also came off of Petitte.

August 14, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury is out of tonight's lineup at Texas, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

The speed demon is fine, and skipper Terry Francona just wants to give him a day off. Josh Riddick will bat leadoff in his place.

August 8, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury had two of the Red Sox measly four hits against CC Sabathia and the Yankees on Saturday. The 2-for-4 performance raised his average to .302, but the Sox fell 5-0.

Our View:

The .302 average is a nice perk from Ellsbury, who is mostly valued for his running game (50 stolen bases). He's now hit in eight straight games.

August 8, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles in tonight's 2-0 loss at New York. He also swiped two bases.

Our View:

The Sox only mustered four hits in the 15-inning battle. Ellsbury raised his season average to .300, and now has 50 stolen bases, which ranks second in the majors behind Carl Crawford (51) of Tampa Bay.

July 24, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-4 with a single and a double in tonight's 3-1 win over Baltimore at Fenway Park. He also swiped a base.

Our View:

Ellsbury recorded his first multi-hit game since July 7, and was only hitting .200 in July heading into tonight's game. He has nine stolen bases this month though, and continues to rank second in the AL with 42.

July 20, 2009

Manager Terry Francona will re-insert Jacoby Ellsbury into Boston's leadoff role in the lineup today, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

J.D. Drew had been hitting leadoff with Ellsbury batting sixth for the most part over the past month and a half. Francona's decision to put Ellsbury back at No. 1 makes sense and could stick, given that Ellsbury has hit .288 with a .320 on-base percentage in 49 starts leading off, while Drew hit .190 with a .299 OBP in 14 games in the top spot.

July 18, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury will miss his second straight game with the flu on Saturday, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:

He will probably be a game time decision for Sunday. Stay tuned for updates.

July 17, 2009

Red Sox writer Ian Browne is reporting on his Twitter page that outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has been scratched from the team's Friday night lineup due to sickness. He will be replaced in center field by Rocco Baldelli.

Our View:

Browne didn't give any specifics on the sickness, but you have to believe it isn't something serious since he was such a late scratch. Check back for updates on his status for the rest of the weekend, but it seems likely he will be good to go tomorrow.

July 10, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury was ejected from tonight's game against the Royals in the fifth inning for hurling his helmet, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

He was agitated by a close call at the plate, and was tossed out by umpire Derryl Cousins after throwing his helmet. Rocco Baldelli replaced Ellsbury in center field.

June 26, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the Red Sox' lineup on Friday, according to the Boston Globe. He will be replaced in center by Mark Kotsay.

Our View:

Just a night off for Ellsbury, so nothing to worry about here. Get him out tonight if you can, but he should be a safe play for the rest of the weekend.

June 12, 2009

As expected, Jacoby Ellsbury is penciled into Friday's lineup at Philadelphia after missing the last three games with a shoulder ailment, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

Ellsbury will bat seventh in his first game back, but the speed demon should still be employed in fantasy lineups. Opposing hurler Joe Blanton has a 5.46 ERA.

June 11, 2009

The Boston Globe reports that Jacoby Ellsbury will return on Friday at the earliest. "(The shoulder is) still really tender. If I have to get out there, dive again, steal bases, that's where I could possibly make it worse. But I'm pretty happy how I've felt from yesterday, so good news."

Our View:

Ellsbury doesn't seem to be bothered too much throwing or swinging, but he is also aware that his style of play warrants a lot more opportunity to cause further damage to the joint. The Red Sox were able to handle the Yankees fine without him, and they may be better off taking a cautious approach with their center fielder.

June 10, 2009

Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury will miss a second straight game on Wednesday night due to a strained right shoulder, the Boston Herald confirms. Mark Kotsay will start in his place. Ellsbury remains day-to-day.

Our View:

Fantasy owners who started Ellsbury this week are surely cursing, as he's down to only four possible starts this period. Hopefully the team will have some positive news after tonight's game.

June 9, 2009

Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury will not be in the Red Sox lineup Tuesday night due to a bruised shoulder according to the Providence Journal. Mark Kotsay will start in his place and he is considered day-to-day.

Our View:

He hurt the shoulder making a highlight reel catch on Sunday at Fenway Park against the Rangers. Ellsbury seems to have a propensity to get banged up, but he usually returns quickly. Monitor his status daily and be ready to re-insert him into your lineup.

June 8, 2009

The Boston Globe is reporting that tests on the injured shoulder of Red Sox' center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury showed no structural damage. Ellsbury has been listed as day-to-day with an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder.

Our View:

Great news for Red Sox' fans and fantasy owners. The report indicated that the team would decide on his status for tomorrow's game sometime tomorrow. We will keep you updated on his status, but don't expect him to miss more than a few days at most.

June 7, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury exited Sunday's battle against Texas before the sixth inning with a strained right shoulder, according to MLB.com. He sustained the injury while diving for a ball in the outfield.

Our View:

Mark Kotsay moved from right to center field, and Rocco Baldelli replaced Kotsay in right. The severity of Ellsbury's injury is yet to be determined.

June 1, 2009

According to the Boston Herald, Jacoby Ellsbury is likely to remain at the bottom of the order against lefties for the time being. Ellsbury hit eighth in Sunday's game, and manager Terry Francona prefers him at the bottom.

Our View:

This is not a knock on Ellsbury, although his OBP is a bit low for a leadoff hitter, but he seems to be a better fit at the bottom when a lefty is on the mound. Francona feels like he can better utilize Ellsbury's speed and aggressiveness hitting him at the bottom of the order, so look for his stolen base numbers to benefit from the move if he stays down there.

May 29, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury was 2-for-5 and drove in two in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Blue Jays.

Our View:

Ellsbury is hitting .304 and while he only has one home run and 15 RBI, he's still a a solid fantasy option because of his speed. He has swiped 21 bases this season and has only been caught six times.

May 28, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury's 22-game hitting streak came to an end in Thursday's 3-1 win at Minnesota. He went 0-for-3 in the game.

Our View:

The streak started back on May 2 at Tampa Bay, and he had multiple hits in 11 games over the span, with 16 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.

May 28, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 22 games as he went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's loss at Minnesota, according to the Boston Globe. He swiped a base last night as well.

Our View:

Ellsbury will aim to keep the streak alive tonight in the last battle of the four-game series at the Metrodome. Ellsbury is hitting .333 over 60 career at-bats against the Twins.

May 25, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 20 games as he went 2-for-5 in Monday's 6-5 win in Minnesota. He scored one run, but also got caught stealing in his lone attempt.

Our View:

Ellsbury has not been spectacular throughout his current streak, but he is finding ways to get on base at least once per game. His batting average has risen from .273 to .300 and his OBP has jumped from .305 to .333. The Red Sox would like to see him draw more walks, but they'll certainly settle for this type of consistent hitting.

May 23, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a single in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Mets, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

He will look to keep the streak alive Saturday against Mets' opposing hurler Mike Pelfrey (4-1, 4.61 ERA). The speed demon has seven stolen bases over the streak.

May 20, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-4 with a single and a double in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Toronto at home to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

He will look to keep the streak alive tonight against opposing hurler Brett Cecil (2-0, 1.80 ERA). Ellsbury is hitting .329 over 16 games at Fenway Park this season.

May 17, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury's single in Sunday's 3-2 loss against the Mariners extended his hitting streak to 13 games. It is currently the longest streak in the AL, according to the AP.

Our View:

Ellsbury is only slugging .369 and his OBP of .331 is not that great for a leadoff hitter. However, he still holds great fantasy value due to his 16 stolen bases.

May 9, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury returned to the diamond Friday against Tampa Bay following his bout with a tight right hamstring, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

He went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in his return, and should be safe to pencil back into fantasy lineups. He raised his career average against the Rays to .302 (over 129 at-bats).

May 8, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury may return to the diamond tonight against the Rays after missing Thursday's game with a tight right hamstring, according to the Boston Globe. Skipper Terry Francona said, "I think Ellsbury will probably play tonight vs. Tampa Bay."

Our View:

Ellsbury's speed could be compromised by the ailment, but he does have a good track record against the Rays with a .298 batting average and 11 stolen bases on 32 career meetings.

May 7, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Jacoby Ellsbury will remain out of the lineup tonight against the Indians while nursing a tight right hamstring, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

Rocco Baldelli, who is fresh off the DL, will replace him in center field. Julio Lugo will bat leadoff. It is uncertain when Ellsbury will be deemed fit to return to action.

May 7, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury was held out of Wednesday's lineup while nursing a tight right hamstring, but skipper Terry Francona indicated that the outfielder is doing OK, according to the Boston Globe. Francona said, "He felt it and it is real tender. He felt it and was nervous and did not want to hurt it, as opposed to, 'Ah, he hurt it.' "

Our View:

Ellsbury could return for tonight's home game against the Indians, but Francona is yet to make a decision.

May 6, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury is not in tonight's lineup against Cleveland while nursing a tight right hamstring, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

Jonathan Van Every will roam center field in Ellsbury's absence, and will bat eighth in the order. J.D. Drew will bat leadoff. The Red Sox did not speculate when Ellsbury will be ready to return.

May 6, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury will be re-evaluated before tonight's home game against the Indians after exiting Tuesday's game with a tight right hamstring, according to the Boston Globe. Ellsbury said, "It is feeling a lot better now. Ice it up, got some treatment on it. I feel as best I can, given what happened."

Our View:

He was replaced by Jonathan Van Every in center field, and Van Every could start tonight if Ellsbury is held out.

May 5, 2009

According to MLB.com, Jacoby Ellsbury left Tuesday's game in the fourth inning with tightness in his right hamstring.

Our View:

Ellsbury is likely considered day-to-day, but the severity of his injury is not yet known. He was replaced by Jonathan Van Every.

May 2, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-6 with two runs scored and three stolen bases in Saturday's 10-6 win at Tampa Bay.

Our View:

Ellsbury did not steal a base over his previous five games, and he got back on track with a vengeance tonight.

April 26, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury was a nightmare for the Yankees on the base paths Sunday. He was 1-for-3, but scored two runs and stole two bases, including a straight steal of home off Andy Pettitte.

Our View:

Ellsbury hasn't had the hottest bat this season, but he turned up the heat against the Yankees. He had five hits in the series, including his first home run and four stolen bases. He now has ten steals on the season.

April 25, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, a stolen base, two runs scored, and an RBI as the Red Sox beat the Yankees 16-11 on Saturday.

Our View:

Ellsbury already has eight stolen bases on the season and it appears that he is even more aggressive on the base paths than he was a season ago when he swiped 50 bags. As long as the 25-year-old keeps running, he will be a very valuable fantasy asset.

April 20, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury had a big day for the Red Sox on Monday, going 3-for-6 with three runs, an RBI, and a stolen base, his fifth of the season. He is hitting .268 for the year.

Our View:

Ellsbury has gotten off to a slow start here in 2009, but he showed today why he has the potential to be an elite lead off hitter. He got on base for the big boys behind him and used his speed to his advantage. Expect his run and stolen base totals to grow significantly as he finds his stroke at the plate.

April 13, 2009

The Boston Globe reports that Jacoby Ellsbury did not start on Monday against the A's against left-hander Dallas Braden. Rocco Baldelli got the start in center field.

Our View:

Ellsbury does have three steals through six games, but otherwise he has done very little through a week of play. We do not expect his absence against starting left-handers to be an ongoing trend this season.

April 13, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury has set a Red Sox franchise record by playing in 179 straight games without an error.

Our View:

Also worth noting, Ellsbury has three stolen bases, despite only reaching base seven times (five singles, two walks) over the first six games of the season.

April 10, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base in Boston's 6-3 loss to the Angels on Friday night.

Our View:

Ellsbury is certainly a speed demon and the steals will likely come in droves this season. However, he has failed to show the offensive potential he exhibited in the playoffs in 2006. He's a great option for steals, but his other contributions are modest.

March 17, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-3 with two RBI in Tuesday's 9-5 win over the Twins. He hit a double and a homer, his first of the spring.

Our View:

Ellsbury is worth targeting as a top-5 fantasy outfielder, especially for those owners who like to build their team around speed.

March 10, 2009

WEEI Radio in Boston reports the Red Sox have come to terms with 19 players on the 40-man roster on contracts for the 2009 season, including outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury. The 25-year-old Ellsbury will make $449,500 this season.

Our View:

Ellsbury will be a valuable member of any fantasy outfield this season with his speed and ability to generate runs hitting at the top of a potentially potent Red Sox lineup no matter how much money he is being paid.

March 8, 2009

Jacoby Ellsbury is dealing with slight discomfort in his hamstring, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:

Skipper Terry Francona is not concerned with the ailment, so fantasy owners shouldn't be either.

February 24, 2009

In anticipation of playing nearly every day in centerfield for the Red Sox this year, Jacoby Ellsbury arrived at spring training sporting some added bulk, according to the Associated Press. "I feel bigger, stronger, feel prepared and feel in good baseball shape," Ellsbury said. "I'm definitely excited for the season to get under way."

Our View:

Barring injury, Ellsbury will likely match, if not exceed, his 145 appearances in 2008. But unlike last year, when he split time between all three outfield positions, Ellsbury will stake his claim to centerfield, where the departed Coco Crisp got a majority of the starts.

February 13, 2009

GM Theo Epstein praised center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, according to the Boston Globe. Epstein said, "I think Jacoby is already an impact defender and an impact base runner and I think, based on his track record in the minor leagues, this is a guy we all feel is going to hit and get on base enough to be a real weapon offensively, more so than he already is."

Our View:

The club had enough faith in him to let Coco Crisp depart for Kansas City. The rising star has potential to be a top-5 fantasy outfielder in 2009, and should be a great source for stolen bases in the very least.
