Jose Ascanio underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder today, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The famous Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery, and the Pirates are optimistic that the 24-year-old reliever will be recovered in time for the start of spring training.
Jose Ascanio (shoulder tendinitis) has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list, thus ending his 2009 season.
In 18 innings between the Cubs and Pirates this season, he posted a 4.00 ERA.
According to MLBlogs.com, Pirates reliever Jose Ascanio has been shut down in his rehab and his season may be in jeopardy.
He had additional test done on his ailing shoulder and the results showed that one of his lats is damaged. He was expected to join the Pirates rotation in September, but now will likely miss the remainder of the season. He's not allowed to participate in any baseball activities for at least ten days.
Jose Ascanio has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis.
Ascanio was acquired from the Cubs in the John Grabow deal. He had allowed two runs in 2.2 innings for the Bucs. He's expected to return before the end of the season.
MLBlogs.com is reporting that the Pirates plan to recall pitcher Jose Ascanio from Triple-A Indianapolis. Ascanio came to Pittsburgh in the deal that sent Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow to the Cubs.
Ascanio will pitch out of the bullpen for the Pirates, and he had a 3.52 ERA with the Cubs over 15.1 innings this season. He should be a nice addition to the Pittsburgh pen, but he would not be a nice addition to anyone's fantasy team.
Jose Ascanio, Kevin Hart and infielder Josh Harrison were traded from Chicago to Pittsburgh in exchange for Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Ascanio held a 3.52 ERA over 15.1 innings of relief with Chicago. His fantasy value as a middle reliever does not look to improve in Pittsburgh.
Jose Ascanio has been demoted to Triple-A Iowa, according to ESPNChicago.com.
Jeff Samardzija will take his place. Ascanio has pitched reasonably well for the Cubs in 2009, posting a 3.52 ERA in 15.1 innings of work. He will likely be back with the big club at some point.
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Cubs have called up Jose Ascanio from Triple-A Iowa. He will replace Chad Fox on the roster.
Ascanio doesn't hold much fantasy value, so this move doesn't have much of an impact. He should see some innings in middle relief, but don't expect him to be with the big club all season.
