Newsbreakers

October 3, 2009

Mark Reynolds had his fifth four-strikeout game of the season on Saturday, as the Diamondbacks whiffed 12 times as a team in 5-0 loss at Wrigley Field.

Our View:

A truly inexcusable stat from Reynolds. The four strikeouts upped his major league record total from 2009 to 220, shattering his previous MLB record of 204 from last season. All the home runs are nice, but if he doesn't cut down on his absurd amount of unproductive outs at some point, he won't remain a viable player.

September 20, 2009

With 202 strikeouts entering play on Sunday, Mark Reynolds has a good chance of breaking the single season "record" of 204 he set last year. He will be facing the Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez, who has fanned Reynolds four times in nine plate appearances between the two.

Our View:

It's disheartening to see Reynolds not cut down at all on his mammoth 2008 strikeout total, but at least he has improved in almost every other offensive category, including average, home runs, steals and RBI. He will be a premier fantasy player in 2010.

September 17, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts on Wednesday. The four strikeouts gave him 200 on the season, and just the second 200-K year in major league history.

Our View:

The other 200-K campaign? Reynolds in 2008. His power is prolific, but if he is unable to cut down on all the unproductive outs, he will eventually be of very little value to major league clubs.

August 28, 2009

Mark Reynolds picked up his 87th and 88th RBI on Friday, as the Diamondbacks pinned a 14-spot on the Astros in Phoenix.

Our View:

After missing three games with the flu, Reynolds now has four RBI in two games since returning to the lineup.

August 28, 2009

After missing three games with the summertime flu, Mark Reynolds returned to the lineup on Thursday and promptly hit his 39th home run, helping Arizona win 11-0 in San Francisco.

Our View:

If Reynolds has a hot September, he has an outside shot at becoming the first Diamondback to hit 50 home runs since Luis Gonzalez in 2001.

August 27, 2009

MLB.com reports that Arizona slugger Mark Reynolds expects to be back in the starting lineup for Thursday's game.

Our View:

Reynolds has been battling the flu and already missed three straight games. He was diagnosed with a severe stomach virus and a slight case of pneumonia, so the last few days have been very unpleasant for Reynolds. Sounds like he's turned the corner though and should be good to get back into fantasy lineups for today's contest.

August 23, 2009

Mark Reynolds was held out of Arizona's lineup on Sunday as he deals with the flu, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:

The slugging third baseman sounds like he is pretty sick, so he may not return until the middle of the week.

August 20, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 2-for-3 to snap an 0-for-7 skid on Thursday, but didn't drive in any runs, as Arizona got hammered 12-3 in Philadelphia.

Our View:

The strikeout king Reynolds was coming off a four-K night, so it was nice to see him make some contact on Thursday. Expect the homers to keep coming in bunches down the stretch for the slugging third baseman.

August 17, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Monday's 9-4 loss at Atlanta. He hit a single and a two-run homer off Boone Logan.

Our View:

Reynolds impressively swatted his ninth homer of August, and is now tied with Albert Pujols for the MLB lead with 38.

August 15, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 1-for-4 with a solo homer off Jonathan Broxton in tonight's 4-3 win over the Dodgers at Chase Field.

Our View:

Reynolds impressively hit eight homers so far in August, and ranks second in the majors behind Albert Pujols (38) with 37 for the season.

August 14, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 1-for-2 with a run scored on Friday night, as the D-Backs 4-1 beat the Dodgers 4-1, but most notably recorded only one of Arizona's 11 strikeouts.

Our View:

It's not a new Mark Reynolds, however. The slugging third baseman still has nearly as many Ks, 15, as hits, 16, this month.

August 10, 2009

Diamondbacks' infielder Mark Reynolds has been named the NL Player of the Week, according to The Sports Network. Reynolds went 13-for-29 with six homers and ten RBI last week.

Our View:

Reynolds has been one of the biggest fantasy surprises in the league this season, and at this point he looks like the real deal. When he keeps the strikeouts down and the average up, he can be a fantasy force. If you have him, keep rising him the rest of the way.

August 9, 2009

Mark Reynolds hit his 36th home run on Sunday, tying Albert Pujols for the league lead, but that was the D-Backs only highlight, as they lost 9-2 in Washington D.C. to get swept.

Our View:

Reynolds' monster season should put to rest all the jokes about his sometimes questionable plate discipline, and he looks positioned to be one of the game's premier power hitters for years to come.

August 8, 2009

Mark Reynolds hit another home run on Saturday night. The slugging third baseman accounted for all the D-Backs' runs by launching his 35th of the season in a 5-2 loss to the Nationals.

Our View:

Reynolds now trails Albert Pujols by one in the home run department this season. He's been one of the biggest fantasy surprises all year. While the power has always been there, it is no longer accompanied y a dismal average. He's hitting .289 this season.

August 7, 2009

Mark Reynolds' monster season continued on Friday, as the slugging third baseman collected three hits and clubbed his 34th home run in Arizona's 7-6 loss to the Nationals.

Our View:

Looks like that ribcage is doing just fine. If you hesitated to start him tonight because of the injury, don't make the same mistake tomorrow.

August 7, 2009

Mark Reynolds was in the Diamondbacks lineup on Friday, one day after leaving the team's game with a strained ribcage, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Mr. Home Run or Strikeout will likely do plenty of both over the weekend, and should be in your lineup without hesitation

August 7, 2009

Mark Reynolds left Thursday's game against the Pirates with a strained ribcage, according to MLBlogs.com. The injury is not being considered serious, and Reynolds expects to be in the lineup Friday.

Our View:

With Justin Upton on the DL, the D-Backs could not afford to lose Reynolds as well, so it's good that the injury is minor. His 33 home runs and .284 average have been major surprises this season, and right now he is a fantasy machine for owners.

August 6, 2009

Mark Reynolds continued his amazing season Thursday night, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and his 33rd home run. The Diamondbacks beat Pittsburgh 11-6 in 12 innings.

Our View:

Reynolds is still striking out a ton, but is actually batting .284 - a huge improvement over his .239 from 2008.

August 3, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 2-for-5 with two homers and three RBI in tonight's 6-5 win at New York.

Our View:

Reynolds hit two homers in a game for the third time this season, and hit a homer in six of his last seven games. He remains second in the majors with 32 homers.

August 1, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 1-for-4 with a solo homer off Brian Stokes in tonight's 9-6 loss at New York.

Our View:

Reynolds is now the second player in the majors to reach 30 homers this season, joining Albert Pujols (34). Reynolds homered in five of his last six games.

July 31, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 2-for-3 with a solo homer off Livan Hernandez in tonight's close 3-2 win at New York. His other knock was a double.

Our View:

Reynolds clubbed eight homers in July, and now currently ranks second in the NL with 29. He should remain a strong source for power if the third baseman can remain healthy down the stretch.

July 27, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 1-for-4 with a solo homer off Ryan Madson in tonight's 6-2 loss to the Phillies at Chase Field.

Our View:

Reynolds has homered in back-to-back games, and now ranks second in the NL with 27 home runs for the season. He needs one more to tie his season-high of 28 set in 2008 as well.

July 26, 2009

Mark Reynolds slammed his 26th home run of the season on Sunday, helping Max Scherzer and the Diamondbacks subdue Pittsburgh 9-0.

Our View:

Reynolds has blossomed into one of the game's elite power hitters in 2009. He still strikes out an absurd amount of times, but keeps his average respectable and steals a good amount of bases. He should be one of the first third basemen off the board next year.

July 20, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 1-for-2 with a solo homer off Jorge De La Rosa in tonight's 10-6 loss at Colorado.

Our View:

Reynolds crushed his 25th homer of the season, with the assistance of launching pad Coors Field. He is currently tied for second in the NL in homers (with Raul Ibanez), and should remain a strong source for power in fantasy leagues.

July 18, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 3-for-5 with three runs scored in tonight's 4-2 win at St. Louis. All three of his hits were singles.

Our View:

Reynolds has five hits over his last two games, and continues to lead Arizona with 58 runs scored. He has now gone nine straight games without a homer though.

July 5, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer off Ubaldo Jimenez in Sunday's 4-3 win at Colorado.

Our View:

Reynolds hit a homer in three of five games in July, with tonight's shot coming at launching pad Coors Field. He is now tied for second in the NL (with Adrian Gonzalez) with 24 home runs.

July 4, 2009

Mark Reynolds hit his 23rd home run of the season on Saturday night as the Diamondbacks pounded the Rockies 9-6.

Our View:

Reynolds continues to put up big numbers in '09, and is making a strong case for his first All-Star game appearance.

July 2, 2009

Mark Reynolds' 22nd homer of the season gave the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead, but a blown save attempt by Chad Qualls cost the slugger his game-winning RBI. It was Reynolds' only hit in four trips and Arizona lost a heart-breaker in the tenth to the Reds 3-2.

Our View:

Reynolds is actually putting together a fine fantasy campaign in 2009. His 22 homers are accompanied by a .270 average and 57 RBI. The power has always been there, but Reynolds is making real strides this season with his overall plate production. Last year he hit just .239 with 204 Ks.

June 30, 2009

Mark Reynolds led the Diamondbacks offensively in tonight's 6-2 win at Cincinnati, as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. He hit a double and two singles.

Our View:

He raised his batting average to .274, and continues to lead Arizona with 56 RBI.

June 26, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 3-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's 9-8 loss to the Rangers at Chase Field. He hit two home runs and a single. The battle lasted 12 innings.

Our View:

Reynolds continues to generate strong numbers in Arizona, as he leads the club with 21 homers and 53 RBI. He has eight homers and 23 RBI so far in June.

June 21, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer off Felix Hernandez in Sunday's 3-2 loss at Seattle.

Our View:

Reynolds hit his team-leading 19th homer of the season, with six coming so far this month. He should remain a solid source for power in fantasy leagues as long as he stays healthy.

June 15, 2009

Mark Reynolds was named co-National League player of the week for the week ending June 14 according to The Sports Network.

Our View:

Reynolds crushed the ball all week long, hitting three home runs and driving in nine. He also stole a base and raised his average from .264 to .281. This goes a long way toward offsetting the other piece of Reynolds news that has come out in the last week - he is on pace to break his own single season record for most strikeouts.

June 13, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Astros at Chase Field.

Our View:

Reynolds is only hitting .278, but leads Arizona with 16 homers and 44 RBI. He should remain productive in fantasy leagues.

June 12, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 4-for-5 with five RBI in Friday's 8-1 win over the Astros at Chase Field. He had three doubles and a three-run homer.

Our View:

Reynolds remains Arizona's best offensive player, as he leads the club with 16 homers and 42 RBI. He has been a solid fantasy contributor as well.

June 12, 2009

The Arizona Republic reports that Mark Reynolds is on pace to strike out 231 times this season, which would shatter the major league record of 204 he set last season.

Our View:

As is always the case with Reynolds, his staggering amount of strikeouts are threatening to overshadow the good things he is doing. He is currently sixth in the National League in strikeouts and a surprising sixth in steals. Despite all the Ks, he is a solid option at third base.

June 7, 2009

Mark Reynolds hit a three run homer in the 18th inning of Sunday's game against the Padres to give Arizona a 9-6 win. It was his only hit in seven at-bats. He also walked twice.

Our View:

Reynolds came through in a big way in an absolute marathon game. The homer was his 14th and Reynolds appears to be a consistent source of pop in fantasy lineups. He's also hitting .266 this season, significantly higher than his .239 season a year ago.

May 28, 2009

Mark Reynolds had a nice night at the plate on Thursday in the Diamondbacks' 5-2 win over the Braves. Reynolds went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and two RBI in the game.

Our View:

Reynolds hasn't been outstanding this season, but he has been one of the better hitters in Arizona's lineup. He is showing decent power, and he is also stealing some bases, which makes him a decent fantasy option.

May 21, 2009

Mark Reynolds went 2-for-3 and ripped his 12th homer of the season on Thursday. He drove in three of the Diamondback's four runs in their win over the Marlins and stole a base along the way.

Our View:

Reynolds is showing off his power this season, with 12 homers already and has displayed a fine running game as well with ten steals. He's hitting .266 and has driven in 23 and looks like a fine all-around fantasy talent right now.

May 11, 2009

Mark Reynolds started at first base Sunday, and new skipper A.J. Hinch noted that the move was only temporary, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:

Regular first baseman Conor Jackson was out due to a fever, and Hinch moved Reynolds across the diamond to start Ryan Roberts at third. There is belief that Reynolds could limit his errors with a move to first, which would also give Chad Tracy more playing time at third, but Reynolds does not expect to see much more action at first.

May 3, 2009

Mark Reynolds was 1-for-4 with a home run and two strikeouts in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Brewers.

Our View:

This was a pretty typical game for Reynolds. He's feast or famine as far as his home run and strikeout totals. He has six long balls on the season, but has already whiffed 28 times. Still, the .267 average is better than what he's put up in the past.

April 26, 2009

Mark Reynolds homered and drove in two with a 2-for-5 performance in the Diamondbacks' 5-4, 12-inning win over the Giants on Sunday.

Our View:

Reynolds now has five long balls on the season, but they're not accompanied by his usual low average. He's hitting a respectable .274 and if he can keep the average up he becomes a much more promising fantasy player. He still racks up the Ks though and has 22 already.

April 19, 2009

Mark Reynolds did not start on Sunday due to a strained left quadricep, according to MLB.com. Manager Bob Melvin said Reynolds could have played if needed.

Our View:

Reynolds has two home runs through two weeks and he will have to maintain his power stroke to maintain his fantasy value. Don't expect the strain to be a serious issue going forward.

April 4, 2009

Mark Reynolds was 1-for-4 with an RBI on Friday against the White Sox.

Our View:

Reynolds enjoyed a successful spring at the plate, but fantasy owners aren't holding their breath. They'd prefer to play the "I'll believe it when I see" game with Reynolds, who struck out a record 204 times last season.

March 27, 2009

Mark Reynolds was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Friday's 9-3 win over the Angels.

Our View:

Reynolds is hitting .348 this spring. That's .109 points higher than he hit last season. Expect the average to drop and the Ks to pile up. His power is great, but if he doesn't improve in other areas he may find himself out of a job.

March 15, 2009

Mark Reynolds hit a solo shot in Sunday's 10-7 loss to the Cubs. It was his only hit in three at-bats. He also struck out but did not commit any errors.

Our View:

Reynolds hit 28 home runs last season, but that may be the peak of his power. He is probably the worse defensive regular at his position, so unless he can begin to show some improvement with the leather and shed a few of those 204 strikeouts from his total, he may not be an everyday player for very long.
