Newsbreakers

June 27, 2009

Tony Gwynn went 1-for-5 with a solo homer off Kevin Millwood in tonight's 12-2 loss at Texas.

Our View:

The Padres only mustered four hits in the game, and stranded 15 men on base. Gwynn blasted his first homer of the season, and is hitting .329 over 82 at-bats in June. He is worth a look for NL-only leagues if you need help in your roto-outfield.

June 16, 2009

Tony Gwynn got one of San Diego's two hits off of Seattle's Felix Hernandez on Tuesday night and has now hit in nine straight games and 12 of 13.

Our View:

Tony's not as good as his father yet, but does appear to be developing into a solid major league player. Until he starts to get drastically more hits, though, he isn't much of a fantasy option.

May 23, 2009

Tony Gwynn started and hit leadoff for the Padres in Friday's 4-0 win over the Cubs. He was 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.

Our View:

Gwynn should see plenty of playing time in San Diego as they dealt their starting center fielder for him. It's best to wait and see what he can do at this level before adding him to your rosters.

May 21, 2009

Tony Gwynn has reportedly been shipped from Milwaukee to San Diego in exchange for Jody Gerut, according to 619Sports.net.

Our View:

He was just a reserve outfielder during his time with the Brewers, but could see more action with the Padres as he replaces Gerut. He will play his home games at pitcher-friendly Petco Park, but he now holds some value for deeper NL-only leagues.

April 3, 2009

Tony Gwynn has been placed on outright waivers by the Brewers, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:

He will be sent to Triple-A Nashville if he clears waivers with the club. Brad Nelson and Chris Duffy have claimed the two reserve outfield spots with the Brewers, making Gwynn the odd-man-out.

April 2, 2009

Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin said Thursday that a decision on outfielder Tony Gwynn will be made Friday, according to the Wisconsin Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:

There is speculation that Gwynn will be placed on waivers. If so, he would have to clear waivers in order to end up at Triple-A Nashville. However, even then, Gwynn would have to accept his outright assignment since he is out of minor-league options.

March 2, 2009

Tony Gwynn's Sunday throwing session didn't go at all as planned and is now scheduled to undergo an MRI scan on Monday on his right shoulder, according to MLB.com. Gwynn was slated to DH in Monday's exhibition game, but his timetable is now uncertain and he is out of Minor League options.

Our View:

Gwynn is a reserve outfielder at best, and has limited fantasy value even if he returns to full health. Angel Salome will hit in Gwynn's spot in the lineup in the meantime.

February 28, 2009

Tony Gwynn, who is dealing with a right shoulder impingement, is going to try to throw on Sunday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Skipper Ken Macha said, "We are going to try to get Gwynn some at-bats. And I think the next three games are against NL teams so we are taking this opportunity to get him some at-bats."

Our View:

The outfielder cannot afford to miss much time while competing with Chris Duffy for a reserve spot.

February 25, 2009

Updating a previous report, it appears Tony Gwynn could miss a month of action with a shoulder impingement, according to the AP.

Our View:

Gwynn is probably a fourth or fifth outfielder on this team, and he holds little fantasy value. He has decent speed, but rarely gets the chance to showcase it.

February 25, 2009

Tony Gwynn remains out of action with a sore shoulder, which is beginning to concern the Brewers, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:

Gwynn will continue to fall behind in the race for a reserve spot in the Brewers' outfield with every day that he misses. He is competing with Trot Nixon and Chris Duffy.

February 14, 2009

Tony Gwynn will be limited initially in spring training due to a right shoulder impingement, according to the Brewers' official site.

Our View:

Gwynn only had 42 at-bats last year in 29 games, so he isn't expected to have much fantasy value.
