Newsbreakers

May 26, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Nick Masset has been activated from the DL following his recovery from a strained oblique, according to MLB.com. Utility man Wilkin Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Louisville to make room for Masset on the roster.

Our View:

Masset is a solid reliever and will provide a boost to the Reds' bullpen, but his fantasy value is limited to deeper leagues that feature middle men.

May 26, 2009

Nick Masset feels ready to be activated from the DL today following his recovery from a strained oblique, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:

He threw three bullpen sessions, and feels great. It does not look like Masset will need to go on a rehab assignment. Masset is a solid middle reliever for the Reds, but his fantasy value is limited.

May 19, 2009

As expected, Nick Masset has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique, according to the Sports Network. Ramon Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Louisville as the adjoining move.

Our View:

The move is retroactive to May 11, making him eligible to be activated May 26. Masset held little value as a middle reliever, but will be missed in the Reds' bullpen, as he holds a solid 1.23 ERA and 0.89 WHIP over 14.2 innings of work.

May 17, 2009

Nick Masset will be placed on the 15-day DL due to a strained left oblique, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:

Masset will be missed by the Reds as he was among their best relievers. He issued eight walks over 14.2 innings, but only allowed two earned runs and fired 12 strikeouts.

May 16, 2009

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Reds' reliever Nick Masset is dealing with a strain in his side and may be unavailable for a few days.

Our View:

Masset likely isn't DL-bound, but don't expect to see him in the weekend series. The Reds will work Micah Owings out of the bullpen to help out in Masset's absence. Masset has been very good this season with a 1.23 ERA so far.

March 10, 2009

Nick Masset lost his second consecutive spring start Tuesday in ugly fashion to the Yankees. He allowed three runs on eight hits in four innings.

Our View:

The 26-year-old Masset was brought over to Cincinnati as part of the Ken Griffey Jr. trade with the White Sox. He impressed late last season, posting a sub-2.00 ERA in eight relief appearances, but doesn't figure into the Reds' starting rotation plans for this season.
