Two-time defending National League Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum is only seeking a one-year deal via arbitration this winter, and is not looking to sign a long-term contract as of yet, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
He is expected to shatter the previous arbitration salary record of $10 million set by Ryan Howard two winters ago. By not seeking a long-term deal yet, as well, he guarantees a huge 2010 salary since the first years of long-term contracts generally pay less than future seasons.
Despite not receiving the most first place votes, or even the most second place votes, Tim Lincecum has won his second straight National League Cy Young award, according to the Associated Press. St. Louis' Chris Carpenter finished second, while Adam Wainwright finished third.
It was one of the closest votes in the history of the award. While either Carpenter or Wainwright bested Lincecum in many key categories, including wins, innings pitched, ERA and WHIP, Lincecum posted the league's most strikeouts, complete games, shutouts, strikeouts per nine innings and best strikeout-to-walk ratio. Congratulations to Lincecum on becoming the first pitcher in either league to win the award in consecutive seasons since Randy Johnson won four straight from 1999-2002.

Lincecum smudged his image a bit, but fantasy owners likely won't care as long as he keeps throwing fireballs in the regular season.

It was another great start for Lincecum, but after being a virtual lock for the Cy Young in August, he now faces very stiff competition from the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter for the award (not to mention Atlanta's Javier Vazquez). His 15 wins are third amongst the terrific trio, while his 2.48 ERA and 1.05 WHIP are both second to Carpenter (2.24 and 1.01, respectively). He does have the most strikeouts in the National League, however. The only certainty in the 2009 NL Cy Young race is that it promises to be the closest in years.

Through two starts, Lincecum has given us the opposite of what was expected of him. The reigning Cy Young does have 10 strikeouts through 8.1 innings this season, but that is little compensation for his 7.56 ERA and 2.40 WHIP. We would like to say things will certainly turn around for him, but a collapse would not be totally unrealistic for the charismatic left-hander.
