Newsbreakers

August 19, 2009

Jim Johnson is set to return to the Orioles Thursday after leaving the team to attend to his wife for the birth of their daughter, according to MASN Sports.

Our View:

Danys Baez will handle the closer's role tonight at Tampa Bay, and Johnson should be ready to take over upon his return.

August 8, 2009

Jim Johnson picked up his first save since assuming the closer's role in Baltimore on Friday in the Orioles' win over the Blue Jays. Johnson took over as the team's closer after the trade of George Sherrill to the Ddgers.

Our View:

Johnson is not an elite closer by any stretch of the imagination, but he was a good pickup for those in need of saves after the Sherrill trade. If for any reason he is still available in your league, snatch him up now but don't expect him to be the next Mariano Rivera.

July 30, 2009

With the trade of Orioles closer George Sherrill, Jim Johnson is the favorite to pick up the bulk of save opportunities for the Orioles.

Our View:

Former closer Danys Baez is also in the mix. Johnson actually has more blown saves, three, than saves, two, this season, but has a 3.17 ERA and a 2-to-1 Ks to BBs ratio. If you've lost Sherrill and can afford to add only one player, make Johnson the one.

Jim Johnson, who has been dealing with shoulder tendinitis, will throw a bullpen session Thursday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:

Johnson is a good reliever, but is only worth a look for deeper leagues that use middle men.

March 21, 2009

Jim Johnson stated that he has been slowed by tendinitis, and not a shoulder inpingement, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:

Johnson played catch Friday and is hoping to return to the mound in around a week. Johnson is a good reliever as he held a 1.19 WHIP over 68.2 innings in 2008, but would only hold value in deeper leagues that feature middle men if healthy.

March 16, 2009

Jim Johnson is dealing with a right shoulder impingement, but should be ready for opening day, according to the Baltimore Sun. He is taking medicine to deal with the inflammation and he said, "Time is the big luxury that we have. We are taking it little by little right now. We do not want to just treat the symptoms; we want to figure out why we are having the problem."

Our View:

Johnson was among the Orioles' best hurlers in 2008, as he maintained a 1.19 WHIP over 68.2 innings of relief, but won't rack up enough strikeouts to be useful in fantasy leagues that feature middle men.

March 14, 2009

Pitcher Jim Johnson's MRI revealed an impingement in his throwing shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Johnson figures to be a part of the Orioles bullpen once again this season. He should still be ready for opening day, but he will be shut down for the next week.
