Newsbreakers

October 4, 2009

Jonathan Sanchez allowed two runs on three hits and four walks over 5.1 innings on Sunday. He fanned three, but did not earn a decision as the Giants topped the Padres 4-3 in ten innings.

Our View:

Sanchez has had an up and down season that included a no hitter and a demotion to the bullpen, to cover both ends of the spectrum. He pitched much better in the second half after rejoining the rotation, but walks have been a problem all year. He gave out 88 free passes in 2009.

September 24, 2009

Jonathan Sanchez picked up his seventh win of the season on Thursday night. The hard-throwing lefty struck out nine in just 5.1 innings, as the Giants beat the Diamondbacks 5-2.

Our View:

After entering his July 10th no-hitter with a 5.30 ERA, Sanchez has gone 5-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 14 starts, striking out 102 batters in the process.

September 12, 2009

Jonathan Sanchez got knocked around by the Dodgers on Saturday night, allowing five runs in 4.1 innings, as San Francisco got pounded 9-1 at home.

Our View:

It was the first time since June 16 that Sanchez had failed to make it at least five innings in a start. He is now 6-12 with a 4.16 ERA on the season.

September 6, 2009

Jonathan Sanchez dominated the Brewers on Sunday, striking out nine while allowing just one run in six innings, but took a no-decision, as the Giants eventually lost 2-1 in 12 innings.

Our View:

After being removed from the starting rotation and nearly traded earlier this summer, Sanchez now has his ERA down to 4.03, and has struck out 154 batters in just 138.1 innings this season.

September 1, 2009

Jonathan Sanchez held the Philles to just one run on three hits and three walks over six innings on Tuesday, but was slapped with his 11th loss of the season. He fanned eight, but the Giants fell 1-0.

Our View:

Sanchez has now just allowed six earned runs over his last four starts spanning 25 innings. He has come on strong for the Giants down the stretch and is striking out hitters like it's going out of style. He's fanned 32 over those last 25 frames.
