Newsbreakers

October 6, 2009

Alexi Casilla was a hero for the Twins in tonight's 6-5 win over the Tigers at the Metrodome, as he went 1-for-1 with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning. Carlos Gomez crossed the plate for the winning run that sent Minnesota into the playoffs.

Our View:

The club will now battle the Yankees in Game 1 in New York on Wednesday.

July 13, 2009

Alexi Casilla has been recalled from Triple-A Rochester to take the roster spot of Matt Tolbert, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View:

Casilla is batting just .180 in 111 major league at-bats this season, and is not an option in any format.

June 11, 2009

Alexi Casilla has been optioned to Triple-A Rochester by the Twins, according to the Star Tribune. Nick Punto was activated from the DL as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Casilla held a dismal .180 average over 111 at-bats with Minnesota, and failed to save his spot on the roster. He should not be missed in fantasy leagues while working on his skills in the minors.

May 30, 2009

Alexi Casilla has been recalled by the Twins from Triple-A Rochester, according to TSN. Nick Punto was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right groin as the corresponding move.

Our View:

Casilla will see some action at second base while Punto is on the shelf over the next two weeks, but is only hitting .167 over 84 at-bats this season, and he is not a favorable fantasy option. Brendan Harris will cover shortstop.

May 23, 2009

Alexi Casilla was hitting .353 over 13 games with Triple-A Rochester heading into Friday, but Twins' manager Ron Gardenhire indicated that reports say he has not been swinging the bat well as of late, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View:

Casilla was only hitting .167 over 84 at-bats with Minnesota this season prior to getting demoted, and it does not sound like Gardenhire plans on bringing him back soon.

May 9, 2009

Alexi Casilla went 1-for-4 with an RBI triple in his season debut with Triple-A Rochester Friday, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View:

Casilla was sent down to the minors as he was struggling with a .167 average over 84 at-bats with the Twins. He could return to the team if he continues to hit well with Rochester.

May 6, 2009

The Twins have demoted second baseman Alexi Casilla to Triple-A Rochester, the Minneapolis Star Tribune confirms.

Our View:

The Twins called up infielder Matt Tolbert to fill the roster spot, but Brendan Harris will likely see most of the starts at second base. Casilla responded well when he was sent back to the minors to open 2008, and the Twins are obviously hoping for a similar result this time around.

May 4, 2009

Alexi Casilla is only hitting .160 over 75 at-bats with 14 strikeouts, but skipper Ron Gardenhire indicated that are no immediate plans to demote him to Triple-A Rochester, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View:

Matt Tolbert would be a candidate to replace him, however. Casilla only has one hit over his last 18 at-bats.

April 17, 2009

Second baseman Alexi Casilla is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Angels. Brendan Harris will start at second and bat second.

Our View:

Casilla had an awful Thursday night against Roy Halladay, and manager Ron Gardenhire is likely just giving the starter a night off.

April 7, 2009

Alexi Casilla singled home two runs in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday to give the Twins a 6-5 win over the Mariners.

Our View:

The game-winning single was Casilla's only hit in five at-bats. For the most part, he struggled with men in scoring position, leaving a total of three men on base.

March 17, 2009

Alexi Casilla went 4-for-4 with an RBI in Tuesday's 9-5 loss to the Red Sox. He hit four singles, and swiped two bases.

Our View:

He raised his spring average to .457 and has four stolen bases. Casilla is worth targeting as a No. 2 fantasy second baseman, with upside for more. He could be a nice source for speed.
