Newsbreakers

October 3, 2009

Geovany Soto went 2-for-2 with two RBI on Saturday in the Cubs' 5-0 win over the Diamondbacks at home.

Our View:

The two-hit day upped his average to a still miserable .220. His huge regression from 2008 has been on the extreme end of things, meaning he's probably not quite this bad, but he's probably much closer to this player than the one he was in 2008. His 23 home runs last season were out of nowhere after he displayed very little power in the minors, and he will remain a lower-end option in mixed leagues for the foreseeable future.

September 12, 2009

Geovany Soto had a nice afternoon on Saturday, but the Cubs fell to the Reds by a score of 7-5. Soto went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.

Our View:

Soto has been better as of late, but it's too little, too late for him to save his 2009 season. It has to be encouraging that he is starting to hit the ball, but his 2008 season is very much in the past.

September 6, 2009

Geovany Soto was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in the Cubs' 4-2 loss to the Mets on Sunday.

Our View:

Soto has struggled for most of the 2009 season, so anything good coming from him at the plate is noteworthy. You have to wonder which is the real Soto, the 2008 or 2009 version, and fantasy owners should be very cautious with him next season.

August 21, 2009

Geovany Soto is expected to return to the Cubs' lineup on Friday, according to MLB.com. Soto has sat the past two games while dealing with a slump.

Our View:

Soto has been slumping, and he has gotten some time off. We know it's a big shocker that he is struggling right now, since he has been so good this season (sarcasm). Anyone still holding onto Soto should find another option, as Koyie Hill is the better catcher on the Cubs' roster at this point.

August 10, 2009

Geovany Soto went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI in Monday's 11-5 loss at Colorado.

Our View:

Soto launched his first homer of August, and was in need of solid outing after going 1-for-17 over his previous five games.

August 7, 2009

Geovany Soto has been activated from the disabled list.

Our View:

Soto struggled mightily for most of the season (.209 average as last as June 12th) before finally getting into a groove just before he got hurt. There's no telling which Geovany might show up, but it's worth gambling that it's the good one because of how good he was last year and the extra protection he'll have in the lineup in form of Aramis Ramirez, who was out most of the time Soto was in the lineup.

August 3, 2009

Geovany Soto went 1-for-3 with an RBI on Saturday in his first rehab start for the Cubs' rookie league team, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Soto is scheduled to join Double-A Tennessee for three rehab games before being activated by the team before Friday's game against Colorado.

Our View:

Soto will only have four rehab games under his belt before his activation Friday, and he doesn't look like a great fantasy play going forward unless he somehow manages to turn his season around. The catching position is thin, but his .230 average and eight homers still aren't good enough to warrant an add at this point.

July 27, 2009

Geovany Soto (oblique) is due to return from the disabled list in about a week, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View:

This is supposedly good news for the Cubs, though backup Koyie Hill, hitting .206 with two home runs, is providing about the same amount of production Soto was before going down (.230, eight homers). Be ready to activate the slumping sophomore for next week.

July 17, 2009

According to MLB.com, the Cubs are no longer looking for extra help behind the plate due to the progression of injured catcher Geovany Soto.

Our View:

Out with an oblique strain, Soto has handed the bulk of the workload to Koyie Hill. He will continue to bolster the backstop position until Soto's return, but the team feels that the former Rookie of the Year has turned the corner and could return in as soon as two weeks. GM Randy Bush says, "We're encouraged with where he's at."

July 14, 2009

Geovany Soto is rehabbing his strained left oblique at the Cubs' training facility in Arizona, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

An MRI revealed that his strain is mild to moderate. The club is hopeful that the injury will only last for 15-20 days, and that he will return to Chicago as soon as possible. The young catcher shall remain patiently stashed on fantasy rosters.

July 10, 2009

The Cubs are expected to place catcher Geovany Soto (left oblique strain) on the disabled list on Friday, according to the MLB.com.

Our View:

The move will be retroactive to last Tuesday, but Soto is expected to miss in the neighborhood of a month. Despite his struggles this year, his injury damages a struggling Cubs lineup that was just boosted earlier this week by the return of Aramis Ramirez. Koyie Hill should get a majority of the starts in his absence.

July 9, 2009

Updating a previous report, the MRI on the injured oblique of Cubs' catcher Geovany Soto showed some damage, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Cubs will wait to place him on the DL until after the All-Star break if necessary. Koyie Hill will assume a majority of the catching duties in Soto's absence.

Our View:

Since the break is coming up, the Cubs have decided to play a man short for this weekend to give Soto a chance to return after the break is over. If he is still hurting when the Cubs resume play, he will head to the DL retroactive to yesterday. We will keep you updated.

July 8, 2009

MLBlogs.com is reporting that Cubs' catcher Geovany Soto was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup due to a mild oblique strain. Soto is scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday. He was replaced by Koyie Hill behind the plate.

Our View:

Soto is listed as day-to-day, but oblique injuries are usually not good. It may be minor, but we will keep you updated on his status throughout the rest of the week. Get him out of the lineup for today if you can.

July 3, 2009

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Cubs catcher Geovany Soto is not in the team's lineup for their Friday afternoon game against the Brewers. He will be replaced by Koyie Hill behind the plate.

Our View:

Soto has actually been hitting the ball well lately after a horrid start to his season, and he is slowly turning back into a solid fantasy option. Get him out today if possible, and if not he should be back tomorrow.

June 30, 2009

Geovany Soto went 2-for-3 with a double and a single in tonight's 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh.

Our View:

The Cubs only mustered six hits in the shutout loss, and stranded 12 men on base. Soto recorded their only extra base hit, and was a lone bright spot.

June 26, 2009

Geovany Soto led the Cubs offensively in Friday's 5-4 win at the White Sox, as he went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer off Jose Contreras. His other knock was a single.

Our View:

Soto crushed his sixth homer of June, and is finally generating power for fantasy owners after only hitting one homer over the first two months of the season.

June 25, 2009

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Cubs' catcher Geovany Soto tested positive for marijuana at this year's World Baseball Classic. Soto has been banned from international play for two years, but he will not be disciplined by the league or by the Cubs.

Our View:

Since the positive test didn't come during a league test, Soto gets off the hook. Still, with his terrible sophomore season finally starting to look up, this is a terrible time for the news to come out. Soto assured the fans that it was an isolated incident, and he apologized to his team and the city of Chicago.

June 24, 2009

Geovany Soto went 2-for-4 with a solo homer off Rick Porcello in Wednesday's 5-3 loss at Detroit. His other hit was a double.

Our View:

Soto swatted his third homer over his last six games, and is finally generating power for fantasy owners after only hitting one home run over the first two months of the season.

June 24, 2009

Geovany Soto will start on Wednesday after coming out of the Cubs Tuesday night game with an injured thumb, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

If you are still starting Soto every game, he and his .222 average are good for Wednesday night.

June 21, 2009

Geovany Soto went 1-for-2 with a solo homer and two RBI in Sunday's 6-2 win over Cleveland at Wrigley Field.

Our View:

Soto is starting to generate power as he hit a homer in two of his last three games. He only had one total homer over the previous two months of the season.

June 18, 2009

Geovany Soto's eighth inning home run completed a four run comeback for the Cubs on Thursday and tied their game with the White Sox at 5-5. They would go on to win 6-5.

Our View:

Soto is showing signs of life after a horrendous start to 2009. He now has three home runs in the last two weeks after only hitting one the first two months of the season.

June 6, 2009

Geovany Soto returned to the Cubs' lineup with a bang on Saturday as he launched a solo home run in the seventh inning. Soto was 1-for-4 on the night, but that one hit was a big one.

Our View:

Soto has been awful this season, but his home run tonight gives fantasy owners something to be excited about. The reigning Rookie of the Year has the ability, and if he puts it together he could be a top option in the second half of the year. He has to prove he can be consistent before he regains his fantasy value, however.

June 5, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Cubs' catcher Geovany Soto will be out for the next few games with what the team is calling a "mental break." Soto has been struggling this season, and the team feels like he could use a break.

Our View:

Soto has been a major disappointment this season, and right now he is killing fantasy owners. It may not be time to completely give up just yet, but you should find another option for the next few days and maybe keep Soto out until he starts hitting again.

May 13, 2009

Geovany Soto went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI in the Cubs' rain-shortened 6-4 win over the Padres on Wednesday.

Our View:

Last year's Rookie of the Year, has been off to a dreadful start this season. He raised (yes, raised) his average to .193 after today's game, hit his first home run and drove in his fifth, sixth and seventh runs. That should give you an idea of how poor Soto has been up to this point.

April 29, 2009

Catcher Geovany Soto is back in the lineup on Wednesday after a break on Tuesday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Our View:

Soto has been pushing through a sore shoulder, and it may be affecting him at the plate and behind the plate. We hope one day off helps him to relax.

April 29, 2009

Catcher Geovany Soto could be out of the Cubs lineup again on Wednesday. "Sometimes, rather than fight it, you get him out of there for a few days and get the cobwebs out," manager Lou Piniella tells the Chicago Tribune. "Sometimes a young player [needs to] relax and [needs] a little time to get himself together." Soto sat out on Tuesday. He is hitting only .119 and has been dealing with a sore right shoulder. Koyie Hill will start if Soto is out on Wednesday.

Our View:

Soto is testing fantasy owners' patience with this slow, injury-hindered first month. He may be pressing too hard to live up to his rookie levels, and a couple days on the bench could be a good thing.

April 28, 2009

Geovany Soto will not be in the Cubs' lineup tonight at Arizona, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Soto is yet to hit a home run and holds an anemic .119 average over 42 at-bats. He also allowed five stolen bases in Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, and it is uncertain how many games skipper Lou Piniella will keep him on the bench.

April 13, 2009

Geovany Soto played catch at around 90 feet Sunday and did not report any issues regarding his sore right shoulder, according to the Daily Herald.

Our View:

Skipper Lou Piniella indicated that Soto won't be placed on the DL. He will be ready to play by Wednesday. His shoulder is at around 60 percent.

April 12, 2009

Geovany Soto, who is dealing with a sore right shoulder, will try to throw today, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Soto is feeling better, but skipper Lou Piniella will have to decide by Monday whether to place him on the 15-day DL. Primary backup catcher Koyie Hill is also nursing a painful toe injury, and the club cannot afford to carry one catcher.

April 11, 2009

Geovany Soto isn't expected to play during the weekend series at Milwaukee, according to Scout.com. "I would say tomorrow, probably not," manager Lou Piniella said, referring to Saturday night's game. "Sunday, I'll waver a little bit, but I wouldn't bet on it." Soto is dealing with a sore right shoulder.

Our View:

At this point, the Cubs don't plan on placing Soto on the DL, but Pinella said the situation can't go on much longer. Mark Johnson would likely be recalled from Triple-A Iowa if the team decides to DL Soto.

April 10, 2009

An MRI on Thursday revealed no structural damage in Geovany Soto's right shoulder and Soto isn't expected to miss more than the next two or three games for the Cubs, according to the Arlington Daily Herald.

Our View:

This comes as great news to Soto owners, as there had been lingering concerns that a DL-stint was in the offing. Koyie Hill will start in Soto's place and, while you shouldn't expect anything from Soto the rest of this weekend, it looks like it will be safe to go with the star catcher in your lineup for next week.

April 9, 2009

Geovany Soto could be placed on the 15-day DL with his sore right shoulder, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Soto dealt with a similar shoulder ailment in Triple-A, and Cubs' skipper Lou Piniella said, "From talking to him, it lasted a week or so the first time. Let us hope it does not. If it is going to be that long, I am not so sure we can stay with one catcher."

Our View:

Koyie Hill will serve as the starting catcher while Soto is out, and they could recall Mark Johnson from Triple-A for depth if needed. The Cubs' next game is Friday at Milwaukee.

April 8, 2009

Geovany Soto exited Tuesday's game with a sore right shoulder, according to the Chicago Tribune. Skipper Lou Piniella said, "He threw a ball to second base in a little awkward position and he felt a strain." Soto added that it just may be fatigue and said, "Bad time to happen, but I think I will be alright in a couple days."

Our View:

Soto will sit out Wednesday's game, but said he could play in a "super emergency." Koyie Hill will replace him tonight behind the plate at Houston.

April 1, 2009

Geovany Soto smacked two home runs on Wednesday and drove in five. They were his first home runs of the spring.

Our View:

It's nice to see Soto showing off the power stroke for the first time this spring. He should settle in nicely in the Cubs loaded and expensive lineup and be a fine fantasy producer yet again this year.

February 23, 2009

Geovany Soto is not expecting a sophomore slump in 2009, according to MLB.com. Manager Lou Piniella stated, "He has got a nice quick swing, he hits the ball to all parts of the field, and I think he will do just fine. We do not have to hit him in the middle part of our lineup. We can hit him in the sixth, seventh holes. I think he will be fine. Catching-wise, he knows our pitching staff quite well. It should nott be a problem at all."

Our View:

The reigning NL Rookie of the Year should be safe to draft as a top-5 fantasy catcher.

February 12, 2009

Geovany Soto has arrived early to Cubs camp and it appears that he has lost weight this offseason. He also has claimed his injured hand is 100 percent and is ready to go, according to the Daily Herald.

Our View:

Soto won the Rookie of the Year award in the National League last year and was a fantasy stud behind the plate. This is nothing but good news for Soto fans.
