According to MLBlogs.com, the Mets have acquired second baseman Anderson Hernandez from the Washington Nationals for minor league second sacker Greg Veloz.
Hernandez, who was with the Mets from 2005-07, was the Nationals starting second baseman at the beginning of the season, but lost his job to Alberto Gonzalez. He is currently hitting .251 this season and will provide depth at second for the Mets who are dealing with Luis Castillo's recent injury.
According to MLBlogs.com, Anderson Hernandez has been reduced to a utility player.
Since the Management turnover in Washington, Hernandez has yet to start at second base. He's been working out in the outfield and may see spot starts there, but his days as a second sacker look to be over. Alberto Gonzalez will get the bulk of the playing time there from here on out. Clearly this hurts his fantasy value.
Anderson Hernandez provided all of the Nationals offense on Tuesday night, hitting a three run home run in the sixth inning off Yankees ace CC Sabathia in the Nats 5-3 loss.
It was Hernandez's first home run of the season. He should not be considered for an add in any format.
Anderson Hernandez was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Phillies.
Hernandez is 8-for-12 in his last three games, but he is still not an everyday player. As a result, he's not currently worthy of a fantasy spot.
MLB.com reports that Anderson Hernandez played seven innings in an extended spring training game and reported no discomfort or setbacks. He has been on the DL due to a hamstring injury.
He will head to Triple-A for a rehab assignment, but if all goes well there he could return to the Nationals in about a week. He would then likely resume his position as the starting second baseman.
Anderson Hernandez will start the season on the 15-day DL, according to the Associated Press. He has been bother by a bad hamstring this spring and the team decided to shut him down until he's healthy.
He will likely resume his place as the Nationals starting second baseman when he returns from injury.
Washington second baseman Anderson Hernandez had to leave the team's game on Wednesday with an injury to his left hamstring, according to the Washington Post.
The injury is being described as a strain, but it's possible he won't be ready for Opening Day. He is likely going to be the team's starter, health permitting. Until then, Ronnie Belliard would get the bulk of the playing time.
Anderson Hernandez signed a one-year deal with the Nationals on Thursday, according to the SportsTicker.
Hernandez has some decent stolen base potential and has the inside track to be the Nats' starter at second base in 2009. Hernandez hit .307 with 17 RBI in 81 at-bats in 2008, and he routinely swiped double-digit bags throughout his minor-league career. Assuming he does enough to win the starting gig this spring, he could be an interesting option in NL-only formats.
