SEASON

IPWSKERA

Newsbreakers

September 30, 2009

Despite allowing four runs in five innings on Wednesday, Jason Hammel managed to win his tenth game, as the Rockies beat the Brewers 10-6 at home.

Our View:

The win was just his third at home in 2009, and his ERA is an ugly 5.73 in 81.2 innings at Coors Field this season (as opposed to 3.19 in 93 road innings). This fact makes him not a very attractive option for mixed leagues in 2010 (if he returns to the Rockies).

September 24, 2009

Jason Hammel pitched well in a no decision on Thursday, but the Rockies fell to the Padres 5-4. Hammel went 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six.

Our View:

Hammel was good tonight, but his bullpen couldn't deliver him a win. He has been excellent this season for the Rox, and he remains a very solid fantasy option.

September 19, 2009

Jason Hammel held the Diamondbacks to three runs on four hits and two walks over seven innings. He fanned five and earned his ninth win in the Rockies 10-4 blowout.

Our View:

Hammel dominated everyone except Justin Upton, who touched him for a three-run homer. He now has quality starts in three of his four outings this month.

September 9, 2009

Jason Hammel pitched 7.1 effective innings on Wednesday night, allowing just two runs while striking out eight, but would take a no-decision as the Rockies rallied late to beat the Reds 4-3.

Our View:

The start was a rare good one at Coors Field for the former Ray. In 13 starts in Denver, he is now 2-3 with a 5.87 ERA.

September 4, 2009

Jason Hammel did not factor into the decision on Friday as the Rockies came from behind to beat the Diamondbacks 5-4. Hammel went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six.

Our View:

Another quality start for Hammel, but his team needed a late run to come from behind to get the victory. Hammel isn't going to WOW you, but he has been consistent on the road this season and he has been very solid as of late.

August 25, 2009

Jason Hammel was strong again on Tuesday as the Rockies picked up a huge extra-innings win over the Dodgers. Hammel went seven innings and allowed two runs on right hits while walking two and striking out four.

Our View:

Hammel has been outstanding on the road this season, so his outing tonight at home is very reassuring for fantasy owners. If he can put it together at home, he looks to be a very solid fantasy starter for the stretch run.

August 20, 2009

Jason Hammel pitched seven strong innings of one-run ball on the road on Thursday, helping the Rockies beat the Nationals 4-1.

Our View:

"On the road" is the key phrase there. In 85 road innings this season, Hammel has a sparkling 2.88 ERA. In 50 home innings, however, he has a dreadful 7.02 one. In other words, he's only worth spot-starting when the Rox are away from Coors Field.

August 14, 2009

After starting out as one of the best road pitchers in all of baseball this season, Jason Hammel allowed three runs or more for the third straight game away from Denver on Friday night, pitching just four innings of the Rox 6-5 loss in Miami.

Our View:

Hammel's ERA now stands at 4.73, and what little fantasy value he had is rapidly deteriorating.

August 9, 2009

Jason Hammel gave up three earned runs on 11 hits over five innings in Sunday's 11-5 win over the Cubs at Coors Field. He issued no walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

Hammel earned a win in back-to-back starts, and now has a winning record at 7-6. He is pitching better this month after going 0-3 with a 5.76 ERA over six starts in July.

August 4, 2009

Jason Hammel picked up his sixth win of the season on Tuesday as the Rockies pounded the Phillies 8-3. Hammel went 6.2 innings and allowed three run on nine hits while striking out six.

Our View:

Hammel has been the definition of a road warrior this season, and he got the job done again in Philly tonight. He has some value in NL-only leagues, but mixed leaguers need guys who can produce at home as well as on the road.

July 30, 2009

Jason Hammel, one of the best road pitchers in all of baseball in 2009, got torched at pitcher-friendly Citi Field on Thursday, allowing five runs in just 1.1 innings pitched. The Mets beat the Rockies 7-0 behind Johan Santana.

Our View:

It was bound to happen. Hammel's absured road ERA couldn't stay at 1.93 for much longer, and the hot hitting Mets proved to be the team that finally got to him. Give him one more chance, but he might no longer be worth spot-starting when the Rox are on the road.

July 24, 2009

Jason Hammel gave up three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Giants at Coors Field. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Hammel is winless over his last five starts, and is 5-5 this season. He remains a disappointment this month, after going 4-0 with a 3.41 ERA in June.

July 22, 2009

According to the Denver Post, Jason Hammel will start on Friday against the Giants.

Our View:

Hammel was moved up in the rotation due to a setback involving the blister on Jason Marquis' pitching hand. Marquis will now pitch on Tuesday. Hammel has been solid since June first, but may have trouble getting the win on Friday as he will oppose Matt Cain. Just some food for thought.

July 19, 2009

Jason Hammel pitched 5.2 effective innings on Saturday, allowing just one run while striking out seven, but it wasn't enough, as the Padres beat the Rockies 3-1 at home.

Our View:

Hammel has a mediocre 1.45 WHIP, but has allowed more than two earned runs just three times since June 1, and is a decent option in NL-only leagues and most mixed formats.

July 1, 2009

Jason Hammel surrendered only one run in an eight-inning complete game on Wednesday, but that tally proved insurmountable for the Rockies, as the Dodgers shut them out 1-0.

Our View:

It was Hammel's first career complete game in 41 starts. The former Ray is now 5-4 on the season with a 3.91 ERA. If you don't find him worthy of a roster spot, he is a solid spot starting option, especially against right-handed heavy lineups.

June 27, 2009

Jason Hammel only allowed two earned runs on four hits over 7.1 innings in Friday's 4-2 win at Oakland. He issued two walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

Hammel is 5-3 for the season, and is 4-0 with a 3.41 ERA over five starts in June. Keep him active in fantasy leagues for his next battle.

June 20, 2009

Jason Hammel did not bring his good stuff to the park on Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Rockies came back to beat the Pirates 9-7. Hammel went six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while walking two and strking out four.

Our View:

Hammel has a 4.41 ERA on the season, and his fantasy value is very slim at this point. He isn't bad, but it is hard for average pitchers to succeed playing their home games in Coors Field.

June 14, 2009

Jason Hammel picked up his fourth win of the season on Sunday as the Rockies beat the Mariners 7-1. Hammel went 5.1 innings and allowed one run on five hits while striking out six.

Our View:

The Rockies have been hot as of late, and Hammel produced his scond straight solid start. The six strikeouts were nice, and NL-only leaguers may want to give him a look at this point.

June 9, 2009

Jason Hammel allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings in Tuesday's 3-2 win at Milwaukee. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Hammel evened his season record to 3-3, with all three victories coming on the road.

June 4, 2009

Jason Hammel was solid from the hill in Thursday's 10-3 win at Houston, as he only allowed two earned runs on four hits over seven innings. He had two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

Hammel claimed his second win of the season, and bounced back from his previous outing in which he gave up five earned runs against San Diego. Hammel could be a serviceable option for NL-only leagues, evidenced by tonight's performance.

May 24, 2009

Jason Hammel picked up his first win of the season on Sunday as the Rockies beat the Tigers 3-1. Hammel went six innings and allowed one run on six hits while walking three and striking out four.

Our View:

Hammel is now 1-3 on the year, but he really hasn't been all that bad. His ERA is at 4.10, which isn't great, but he should probably be better than 1-3 on the year. He could be an option in NL-only leagues, but for sure not in mixed leagues.

May 19, 2009

Jason Hammel got knocked around by a light-hitting Braves lineup on Tuesday. He allowed six runs (three earned) on ten hits over six innings and fell to 0-3 on the season. The Braves wiped the floor with Colorado 8-1.

Our View:

Hammel has been victimized by team errors this season, but he hasn't done well to pick up his team after they boot a ball. He has allowed 23 runs on the season, but only 16 have been earned. Don't bother with him unless you're in a very deep NL-only league.

May 14, 2009

Jason Hammel pitched well on Thursday, but he didn't get much help from his defense. Hammel went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out four.

Our View:

Hammel may have given up four runs, but only one was earned. His team had three errors, which hurt his chances for a win. Hammel is still a below average fantasy pitcher, but he may have some value in deeper NL-only leagues.

May 3, 2009

Jason Hammel pitched very well on Sunday, but didn't factor in the decision. He scattered six hits and two walks over six innings to shut out the Giants, but Rockies couldn't get it going offensively and eventually fell 1-0 after ten innings.

Our View:

Hammel's six shutout innings lowered his ERA to 3.45, but he only had one strikeout in the game. He's not much of a fantasy option, despite the strong outing on Sunday. And it doesn't help that he has to pitch half of his games in Coors Field.

April 29, 2009

Pitcher Jason Hammel will work two bullpen sessions before his next scheduled start. He informs the Denver Post that he became fatigued during his outing on Monday, when he lasted 78 pitches.

Our View:

Hammel has a short window in which to lock down a rotation spot, and it sounds like he will work hard towards that goal. He is no more than a desperate option in NL-only leagues right now.

April 22, 2009

Jason Hammel is expected to replace the injured Franklin Morales (shoulder) in the Rockies' rotation, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

He should make his first start Monday against the Padres. Hammel started 28 games with Tampa Bay, but holds a career 5.80 ERA, and will not be helped by playing his home games at launching pad Coors Field. He should be left for deeper NL-only leagues.

April 6, 2009

Jason Hammel will work as a long-reliever out of the Rockies' bullpen after being acquired from the Rays, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

Hammel allowed 11 homers over 78.1 innings with Tampa Bay last season, and won't be helped while playing his home games at launching pad Coors Field. He should be left for deeper NL-only leagues.

April 5, 2009

Jason Hammel was notified that he had been traded to the Colorado Rockies, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Terms of the trade were not released.

Our View:

This has been in the making for a while. Hammel isn't heading to a very pitcher friendly area, but at least he'll be part of a big league rotation. He started for the Rays last year while Scott Kazmir was on the shelf, but was moved to the bullpen when he returned. In Colorado he'll have an opportunity to start every fifth day.

April 2, 2009

The Rockies are interested in Rays' hurler Jason Hammel, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:

The Rockies like his age (26) and strong arm. Juan Morillo is favored to make the team over Matt Belisle for the final bullpen spot if a deal is not made. The club is also interested in the Cubs' Chad Gaudin.

March 28, 2009

Jason Hammel looked excellent against Cincinnati on Saturday, giving up just two hits and one walk without a run while striking out four in five innings of work.

Our View:

With the season a week and a half away and David Price having recently been sent down to Triple-A, Hammel's stellar outing couldn't have come at a better time. He's battling Jeff Niemann for the No. 5 spot in Tampa Bay's starting rotation, and his performance against the Reds may have given him the leg up in the competition.

March 23, 2009

Jason Hammel allowed four runs on six hits in four innings versus Pittsburgh on Monday. He was hurt by five walks.

Our View:

Hammel started five games a season ago, but then was moved to the bullpen the second Scott Kazmir returned to the rotation. Barring injury, he'll likely play a role in the pen again this season, but he needs to cut down on his number of home runs allowed (11 in 78 innings in '08) to be effective.
