Newsbreakers

October 8, 2009

Skip Schumaker is not in the Cardinal lineup for their all-important Game 2 contest with the Dodgers on Thursday. Schumaker will re replaced by Julio Lugo at second base.

Our View:

Tough call here by manager Tony La Russa, as Skip went 2-for-3 with a walk in last night's game and has been one of the most consistent hitters for the team all season. There was some talk that he might move to center field for today's game, but La Russa decided to stick with rookie Colby Rasmus in the outfield.

October 8, 2009

Skip Schumaker was the biggest offensive weapon for the Cardinals on Wednesday, but he couldn't do it all. His 2-for-3 effort that included a walk, an RBI and a run scored wasn't enough as the Cards fell to the Dodgers 5-3 in the NLDS opener.

Our View:

Schumaker has been invaluable to the Cardinals this season and looks to have carried his consistent bat into the postseason. Expect him to continue to produce and, if the rest of the Cardinal bats wake up, his efforts will pay dividends.

September 2, 2009

Skip Schumaker went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the Cardinals 10-3 blowout of the Brewers on Wednesday.

Our View:

Schumaker leads the Cardinals in three-hit games this season with 12 and now has his average up to .301 this season. He's a fine NL-only option for runs and average.

August 9, 2009

Skip Schumaker's two run eighth inning home run to make it 4-3 proved to be the difference on Sunday, as the Cardinals beat the Pirates 7-3 to sweep the teams' three game series.

Our View:

The long ball was Skip's first since May 23. Expect plenty of hits and average if you play him in NL-only leagues (111 and .294, respectively), just not any power (four home runs).

July 2, 2009

Skip Schumaker went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored on Thursday as the Cardinals beat the Giants 5-2.

Our View:

Skip has quietly put together a solid 2009 season, batting .293 with 80 hits and 44 runs scored. He is an acceptable option at second base in deeper mixed or NL-only leagues if you are thin there.

June 27, 2009

Skip Schumaker was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the Cardinals' 5-3 win over the Twins on Saturday.

Our View:

The Cardinal leadoff man did his job and got on base in front of Albert Pujols and scored on both of his two-run shots. Skip has his average up to .302 on the season and is getting on base at nearly a .360 clip.

June 24, 2009

Skip Schumaker went 1-for-2 with a single in Wednesday's 11-0 loss at the Mets. He also drew two walks.

Our View:

The Cardinals only mustered four hits in the game. Schumaker extended his hitting streak to nine games, and holds a .300 batting average for the season.

June 23, 2009

Skip Schumaker went 2-for-3 on Tuesday, extending his hitting streak to eight games as the Cardinals and Joel Pineiro shutout the Mets 3-0 at Citi Field.

Our View:

Skip upped his average to .299 in the process, and now has 72 hits in 71 games. If you are desperate for average or hits, he could be worth a look as a third or fourth outfielder in deeper leagues.

June 16, 2009

Skip Schumaker had his first three-hit game since May 30 on Tuesday as the Cardinals routed the Tigers 11-2 in St. Louis.

Our View:

Schumaker still only remains an option in deeper mixed leagues or NL only leagues.

May 23, 2009

Skip Schumaker went 2-for-5 with a solo homer in Saturday's 5-0 win over Kansas City at Busch Stadium. His other knock was a single.

Our View:

Schumaker has homered in two of his last six games, and raised his season average to .297. He only has three homers over 138 at-bats.

May 13, 2009

Skip Schumaker launched his first home run of the season on Wenesday, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals lost to the Pirates 5-2. Schumaker finished the game 2-for-4 with the homer, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Our View:

After a slow start, Skip has picked it up as of late. He is now hitting over .300, but his lack of power hurts his fantasy value. He should score runs hitting at the top of the Cardinals' order, and he has value in NL-only leagues at second base.

April 7, 2009

Skip Schumaker is likely to start at second base in tonight's game against the Pirates after skipper Tony LaRussa went with Brendan Ryan at the position in Monday's season opener, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Schumaker has been assured by LaRussa that he will be the No. 1 second baseman this season. He is worth using in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues.

March 31, 2009

Skip Schumaker will serve as the Cardinals' primary second baseman this season, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Skipper Tony LaRussa said, "I think when you look at his improvement, I think he has been remarkable."

Our View:

Schumaker won't be a viable source for speed or power but should at least hit for a solid average, and is worth a look as a sleeper for NL-only and deeper mixed leagues.

March 17, 2009

Skip Schumaker has improved his defense at second enough that he is expected to stick at the position at least at the beginning of the year, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Strauss also notes that the team could still eventually pull the plug on the experiment, but for now the Cards are willing to live with Schumaker's defense to get his bat into the lineup. Skip will surely be pulled for a defensive sub late in games this year.

March 14, 2009

Skip Schumaker went 2-for-3 with a run scored in Saturday's 2-1 win over Atlanta in the Grapefruit League. Both of his knocks were singles.

Our View:

He is hitting .333 in spring action, and remains worth a look as a flier for NL-only leagues. He started at second base, and the club is yet to move him back to the outfield.

March 12, 2009

St. Louis Post-Dispatch Cardinals beat writer Joe Strauss has said on 1380 AM that the plug could be pulled soon on the Skip Schumaker at second base experiment. Schumaker, who has four errors in 10 spring games, is playing DH today, while Joe Thurston is getting the start at second.

Our View:

Strauss also added that Thurston and Brendan Ryan would be first in line at second if Schumaker officially goes back to the outfield, but that the team could also pursue a trade. The team is not expected to pursue a free agent such as Mark Grudzielanek or Ray Durham.

March 11, 2009

Skip Schumaker made his fourth error in 10 games on Wednesday, according to the AP. The Cardinals are attempting to convert the outfielder to a second baseman.

Our View:

The experiment is not going very well at the moment. There have been indications that he could have more errors in camp if not for some generous scoring. Still, Schumaker is hitting .333 in 27 at bats. Even if he moves back into the outfield, he is still expected to hit leadoff most games for the Cardinals this season.

February 28, 2009

Skip Schumaker played well for the Cardinals on Saturday, going 1-for-2 with two walks. His hit was a double and he also came around to score one run.

Our View:

Schumaker is attempting to make the club as St. Louis' starting second baseman. His offense doesn't appear to be an issue, but his defense could be as he's only been an outfielder It would certainly help the Cards if he could make it as an infielder as they already have a surplus of talent in the outfield.

February 25, 2009

MLB.com reports that Skip Schumaker was impressive in his first start at second base as the Cardinals tied the Marlins 5-5 on Wednesday. He was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Our View:

Schumaker will get a lot of work at second this spring and it seems likely that he will win the job before opening day. The Cards need his bat in the lineup. Expect him to bat leadoff again this season, and he should make a good run at hitting over .300 for the third straight season.

February 25, 2009

Skip Schumaker is set to make his debut at second base today against the Marlins in the Grapefruit League opener, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Schumaker has decent speed and power, and could hit for a solid average. He would be worth a look in NL-only leagues if he nails down the starting gig at second. He has less of a shot to start in their crowded outfield.

February 5, 2009

Skip Schumaker will be working in at second base for much of spring training, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Schumaker had a good year in 2008, hitting .302 and a .359 OBP in 153 games in the outfield. That Cardinal outfield is now crowded and the club wants to utilize his skills anyway they can. With Adam Kennedy the only real option at second base, this could be a good fit for Schumaker.

January 21, 2009

It is possible that Cardinals outfielder Skip Schumaker will get a look at second base in the spring, team GM John Mozeliak said in his online chat at STLtoday.com.

Our View:

Schumaker was drafted as an infielder before making his way to the outfield. The team has Adam Kennedy employed as their second baseman at the moment, but he will offer very little upside compared to Schumaker, who proved to be great against right-handers, hitting .340 with an .861 OPS against them in 2008.
