Newsbreakers

July 28, 2010

Carlos Villanueva has been optioned to Triple-A Nashville.

Our View:

The Brewers needed to clear room for LaTroy Hawkins. In 48 innings of work this season, Villanueva has posted a 4.12 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 61 strikeouts. Expect him to be back in the majors sooner rather than later.

Carlos Villanueva blew a save opportunity against the Twins when he entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead. The Brewers eventually lost the game 8-7 in 12 innings.

Our View:

He ended up sticking around for two full frames, allowing four hits, two walks, and one earned run while striking out two batters. He picked up his first save on Thursday, but his role as a closer is anything but a lock to continue.

Carlos Villanueva picked up his first save of the season on Thursday by tossing a perfect ninth inning in the Brewers' 4-3 win over the Pirates.

Our View:

Villanueva passed his first test as the Brewers' de facto closer. He only had one run to work with, but managed a 1-2-3 inning. Granted, it was the Pirates he was facing, but it's still a good sign for the Brew Crew. If another save opp arises while Trevor Hoffman is "working out the kinks" in his delivery it will likely be Villanueva's to convert, but don't rush out and grab him yet as the Brewers still haven't given up on Hoffman. If he comes back and gets lit up again though, expect Villanueva to get the full time job.

Carlos Villanueva and the Brewers have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt.

Our View:

Terms of the deal have not yet surfaced. While Villanueva did display his versatility last year, serving as a starter, middle reliever, setup man and closer at various points of the season, he wasn't particularly effective in any of the roles. There's no need for fantasy owners to bother with Villanueva.
