J.P. Howell has been shut down for the remainder of the season, according to Marc Lancaster's (Tampa Tribune) twitter page.
Howell worked 66.2 innings of relief this season, and the club decided to rest his arm while no longer in the pennant race. He held a solid 2.83 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.
J.P. Howell has been annointed the Rays' No. 1 closer, according to MLB.com.
The Rays' closer-by-committee looks to be nearing an end, and Howell's fantasy stock improves following this news. Howell pulled away from the pack with a solid 1.93 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 46.2 innings of relief.
J.P. Howell struck out the side as he worked a perfect ninth inning and picked up his third save in the Rays 5-4 win over the Nationals on Sunday.
Despite blowing two saves last week, it appears Howell is the closer in Tampa Bay for now. He has struck out 40 hitters in 32.1 innings on the season and his ERA is down to just 1.95.
MLB.com reports that Tampa Bay reliever J.P. Howell will pitch for the U.S. in the World Baseball Classic.
The Americans will open up pool play in Toronto on March 7, with Canada, Venezuela, and Italy.
