According to the Palm Beach Post, Josh Johnson's agent believes that the Marlins ace will be in a new uniform by 2011.

Our View:

Johnson isn't likely to be traded this offseason, but his tenure in Florida may be over shortly. Agent Matt Sosnick states, "My hope is that he signs a long-term deal and stays in Florida. But I would say it's much more likely that we'll do a one-year deal this year and he's playing for somebody else in 2011." Johnson said he would have accepted a four-year $42 million extension, but the Marlins were only willing to go as high as three years and $23 million, an offer he rejected. He is currently seeking a deal that "far exceeds" the four years and $38 million that Zack Greinke recently got.

December 8, 2009

According to MLBlogs.com, the Marlins have rejected an offer from the Rangers involving Neftali Feliz and Justin Smoak for ace Josh Johnson.

Our View:

That is a pretty enticing package to turn down, so it appears the Marlins are committed to starting 2010 with their ace in tow. Johnson is under control through 2011 and since he's an affordable option there is no reason for Florida to try and unload him in the upcoming season. If a long-term deal can't reached, expect them to try and fetch a monster haul for him down the road when he's about to get too expensive to keep.

November 29, 2009

MLB.com has confirmed that the Marlins have no plans to trade ace starter Josh Johnson this offseason.

Our View:

Teams are no doubt lining up to try and pry him away from Florida, but with Johnson under Marlin control through 2011, little urgency currently exists for the team to unload him.

November 28, 2009

FoxSports.com is reporting that the Marlins have no plans to trade starter Josh Johnson this winter. It had previously been reported that the team would be willing to deal Johnson if the right deal was offered.

Our View:

It would make absolutely no sense to trade Johnson this winter unless the return package was out of this world. He is still under the team's control through the 2011 season, and his price tag is relatively cheap over that time. If the team does decide to move him, it likely won't be for another year at least.

November 27, 2009

The Marlins are reportedly willing to deal Josh Johnson if the right offer is put on the table, according to John Perrotto's (Baseball Prospectus) twitter page.

Our View:

It was recently reported that the Marlins were considering offering the young hurler a multi-year contract. There are not many good free agent starting pitchers, hence making Johnson more valuable.

November 26, 2009

Contract negotiations and Josh Johnson could re-start at some point, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

They broke down last week over Florida's unwillingness to give their ace hurler a four-year contract. He has two seasons of arbitration left in South Florida, and the earliest anyone expects a potential trade to take place is after next season.

November 20, 2009

ESPN.com is reporting that the Florida Marlins and ace Josh Johnson are not close to a contract extension. Johnson's agent told ESPN that negotiatons with the team have reached an impasse.

Our View:

Johnson will likely play under a one-year deal for next season before entering free agency in 2011. If Johnson and the Marlins can't get talks resumed, look for the team to try to trade him before the deadline next season.

October 27, 2009

The Florida Marlins have hired Randy St. Claire as their new pitching coach, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Our View:

St. Claire previously held the same position for the Nationals for six and a half seasons before getting fired last June. While he did not have the greatest talent to work with there, it should be interesting to see how he fares with the Marlins' considerably more talented young arms.

October 4, 2009

Josh Johnson was knocked around by the Phillies in his final start on Sunday. The talented righty allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings in a ten-inning, 7-6 loss.

Our View:

Johnson was having a Cy Young caliber season until growing concern over the number of innings he was throwing forced the Marlins to limit his outings. He hasn't gone seven innings since the middle of August and his ERA suffered as a result. He finishes the season with a 15-5 mark and a 3.23 ERA.

September 29, 2009

Josh Johnson lasted jut five innings on Tuesday after throwing 91 pitches, but the Marlins emerged with a 5-4 win over the Braves.

Our View:

Johnson allowed just one run on three hits and four walks, while striking out five and was in line for the victory before the Marlins bullpen collapsed. He's been on a strict pitch-count as the team is trying to monitor his innings and save his arm from injury.

September 28, 2009

MLBlogs.com is reporting that Marlins' pitcher Josh Johnson will make the start on Tuesday against the Braves. Johnson was scratched from his start on Sunday with the flu.

Our View:

Johnson met with the doctor earlier today, and he has been cleared to make the start tomrrow. This is terrible news for the Braves, who could have avoided Johnson as they fight to get into the playoffs, but it is great news for fantasy owners who still need help over this final week.

September 27, 2009

Josh Johnson has been scratched from his scheduled Sunday start against the Mets with the flu, according to Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Our View:

Chris Volstad will take the hill instead. Johnson will likely start sometime in the next few days.

September 23, 2009

According to the Miami Herald, the Marlins plan to make a multiyear offer to starting pitcher Josh Johnson. Johnson is eligible for free agency after 2011, and he is believed to be seeking 4 years, $50 million.

Our View:

The Marlins aren't usually the kind of team that locks up players to lengthy, big money deals, but it seems like a good idea with this guy. Johnson has the stuff to be a front-line starter for years to come, and if he hits free agency, he would be out of Florida before the team knew what hit them.

September 22, 2009

Josh Johnson had swing and miss stuff on Tuesday, but even though he racked up ten strikeouts against the Phillies, he was touched for four runs on seven hits and two walks over just five innings.

Our View:

Johnson fell to 15-5 with the 9-3 loss Tuesday and needed 92 pitches to get through five. He likely could have gone longer, but the Marlins are monitoring his pitch count and total innings. The ten Ks is gravy, but his ERA jumped to 3.12 after the rough start.

September 16, 2009

Josh Johnson handled a slumping Cardinals team on Wednesday, allowing just one run in six innings, as the Marlins won 5-2 on the road.

Our View:

Johnson is now 15-4 with a 3.01 ERA and sparkling 1.12 WHIP. Though he won't win the award, he will certainly receive some votes in this fall's Cy Young balloting.

September 14, 2009

There is a growing sentiment within the Marlins' organization toward locking up starting pitcher Josh Johnson to a long-term deal, according to the Miami Herald. Johnson is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2011 season.

Our View:

Johnson has been one of the better pitchers in the NL this season, and he is still just 25 years old. The Marlins aren't a franchise that likes to be tied to a long-term contract, but with Johnson it just might be worth it.

September 11, 2009

Josh Johnson issued two earned runs on two hits over five innings in Friday's 5-3 home loss to the Nationals. He had four walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied at 2-2 when Johnson exited, so he ends the night with a no-decision rather than a loss. He allowed two or less earned runs in each of his two starts this month.

September 5, 2009

Josh Johnson only allowed one earned run on two hits over five innings in Saturday's 9-5 win at Washington. He had three walks with one strikeout.

Our View:

Johnson had a rather short outing while collecting his 14th win of 2009. He is back on track after allowing three or more earned runs in each of his previous three starts.

August 31, 2009

Josh Johnson gave up three earned runs on five hits over 6.2 innings in Monday's 5-2 home loss to the Braves. He had three walks and fired eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Johnson did not have a bad outing, but was dealt his fourth loss due to a lack of run support. He averaged seven strikeouts over six starts in August.

August 27, 2009

MLB.com reports that the Marlins plan to monitor Josh Johnson's innings for the rest of the season.

Our View:

Johnson has said personally that he's aiming for 200 innings, but the team wants to be cautious with their budding young ace. It's not out of the ordinary for a pitcher coming off of injury wanting to prove he's durable, but it's also not smart for him to push to hard to reach an arbitrary number. He still has seven starts left and could reach his goal, but don't be surprised if the Marlins monitor his pitch count and keep him from going as deep into games.

August 26, 2009

Josh Johnson struck out seven Mets in six innings on Wednesday, helping the Marlins to a 5-3 victory at home.

Our View:

Johnson did allow three runs, though, making it seven he's given up in his past two starts, tied for his highest two start total of the season.

August 20, 2009

Josh Johnson followed up what was maybe the best start of his young career with a stinker on Thursday night. The imposing righty allowed four earned runs in just 4.1 innings, as the Marlins lost 4-1 in Houston.

Our View:

Johnson had allowed just two earned runs in his previous 13.1 innings. Look for him to rebound in his next scheduled start, which is tentatively against the Mets next Tuesday or Wednesday.

August 14, 2009

Josh Johnson pitched 7.1 stifling innings of one-hit ball on Friday night, striking out 11 Rockies in the process, as the Marlins won 6-5 at home.

Our View:

He had a no-hitter going until Garret Atkins broke it up with a home run in the seventh inning. At 12-2 with a 2.85 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, he's one of the top starters in all of baseball.

August 9, 2009

Josh Johnson only allowed one earned run on four hits over six innings in Sunday's 12-3 win at Philadelphia. He had one walk and six strikeouts.

Our View:

Johnson was in control as he earned his team-leading 11th win of 2009. He also paces the club with a 2.92 ERA, and has not taken a loss over his last five starts.

August 4, 2009

Josh Johnson struck out nine National hitters on Tuesday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Marlins fell to Washington 6-4. Johnson went seven innings and allowed four runs on six hits in the game.

Our View:

Johnson had no problem striking guys out tonight, but not getting a win against the Nats has to be considered a disappointment. Overall, Johnson has been outstanding this season, and he should continue to deliver over the next two months.

July 29, 2009

Josh Johnson improved to 10-2 on the season Wednesday, holding the Braves to three runs in six innings as the Marlins won 6-3 at home. He also hit a three run home run.

Our View:

Johnson didn't have his best stuff, but that's what great pitchers do--win without their best stuff. If you own him, you own one of the fastest rising pitchers in the game.

July 12, 2009

Marlins' ace Josh Johnson was sharp again on Sunday. He held Arizona hitters to just one run on seven hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out seven and earned his eighth win of the season.

Our View:

Johnson has electric stuff and has registered a quality start in all but three of his 19 starts this season. He is the definition of an ace and should be started every time he takes the hill.

July 7, 2009

Josh Johnson pitched well on Tuesday, allowing only three runs in seven innings, but the Marlins bats went silent as the Giants waltzed to a 3-0 victory at home.

Our View:

Johnson is one of the top starters in the National League, and if he is somehow not owned in your league because of lack of name recognition, pick him up immediately.

July 1, 2009

Josh Johnson had hit shortest outing of the year on Wednesday, lasting just 3.1 innings, but the Marlins still reeled off their seventh straight come-from-behind victory, and ninth overall, against the Nationals.

Our View:

Johnson has been one of the best pitchers in the National League this season, belied by the fact that Wednesday was the first time he had failed to go seven innings since May 19. Despite his rough outing, he is obviously a safe bet to start his next time out.

June 26, 2009

Josh Johnson surrendered three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Friday's 7-3 loss at Tampa Bay. He had three walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:

Johnson takes a no-decision, and remains at 7-1 for the season. He has not been dealt a loss over his last seven starts.

June 20, 2009

Josh Johnson was excellent again on Saturday as the Marlins beat the Yankees 2-1. Johnson went seven innings and allowed one run on only three hits while walking two and striking out five. He is now 7-1 on the year.

Our View:

Johnson has quietly become one of the better pitchers in the NL, and he absolutely shut down the Yankees tonight. He should be viewed as a top fantasy pitching option in all leagues, and if you can trade for him it would be a good idea.

June 14, 2009

Josh Johnson went the distance as the Marlins defeated the Blue Jays 11-3 on Sunday. He allowed seven hits and three walks, while striking out six on the afternoon. Two of the seven hits he allowed left the yard.

Our View:

Johnson did not produce the stunning stat line that we are now accustomed to seeing in complete game efforts. He is now 6-1 on the season and leads the National League in innings pitched with 98.

June 9, 2009

Josh Johnson allowed three earned runs on seven hits over seven innings in Tuesday's 4-3 win over St. Louis. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

He ended the night with a no-decision, and has not taken a loss in his last four starts. He remains 5-1 for the season.

June 4, 2009

Josh Johnson was in command on the hill, as he only allowed two earned runs on five hits over 7.2 innings in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Brewers. He had one walk and racked up eight strikeouts. He also helped his own cause by crushing a three-run homer.

Our View:

The rising star improves to 5-1, and has won two straight starts. Johnson has allowed two or less earned runs in six of his last seven outings as well.

May 30, 2009

Josh Johnson improved to 4-1 with seven solid innings in the Marlins 7-3 victory over the Mets on Saturday. He allowed two runs on five hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Johnson was not at his best in his last three starts, in which he had a 0-1 record over the stretch. However, he has always been able to limit the damage and he looked very good today. The second run would have never occured had the Marlins infield been able to execute a double play in the fifth. With a better defense behind him, Johnson could be an unquestioned No. 1 fantasy starter.

May 24, 2009

Josh Johnson did it again on Sunday. He allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over seven innings while striking out seven, but didn't factor in the decision. The Marlins bullpen crumbled once again, but they scratched out a run in the 11th to beat the Rays 5-4.

Our View:

Johnson's ERA is sitting comfortably at 2.67 this season and he has rattled off seven quality starts in his last eight outings. Somehow, the Marlins' ace is just 3-1 this season. He won't be unlucky all season, but he could very well be dominant all year.

May 20, 2009

Josh Johnson exited his last start after the fourth inning with slight pain, but he indicated that his shoulder felt fine this morning, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:

Johnson should be good to go for his next scheduled start against the Rays. He is enjoying a solid campaign with a 2.54 ERA over nine starts.

May 19, 2009

Josh Johnson finally lost his first game of the season on Tuesday. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out six on the night as the Marlins fell 5-3 to the D-Backs.

Our View:

Johnson has been fantastic this season, and even though he wasn't especially sharp on Tuesday he still pitched effectively. Consider him a must start in fantasy leagues as he is the best of the bunch in a young and talented Florida rotation.

May 15, 2009

Josh Johnson is dealing with a weak shoulder, which limited him to only four innings of work in his start on Thursday, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:

The Marlins do not believe there is anything seriously wrong with Johnson. He is not expected to miss his next turn in the rotation.

May 14, 2009

Josh Johnson was dealt a no decision in Thursday's 5-3 loss at Milwaukee. He allowed two earned runs and three hits over four innings, with five walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

He had trouble with his command today, as he only issued six total walks over his previous six starts. He reached a season-low in strikeouts with three as well.

May 9, 2009

Josh Johnson held the Rockies to just seven hits and no walks over eight innings and improved to 3-0 on the season with a 3-1 win Saturday. He struck out five in the contest.

Our View:

Johnson's strikeouts were a bit low tonight, but it's tough to bust a guy's chops for allowing just one run and earning the win in Coors field. We'll let this one slide, Josh. He is a fantasy must start and is looking like one of the best starters in the National League.

May 4, 2009

Josh Johnson was very good again on Monday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Marlins beat the Reds in 14 innings. Johnson went 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out six.

Our View:

Johnson has been excellent this year, and he was no different tonight. Too bad he couldn't notch another win, but he is still undefeated on the year and he is striking out hitters at a very good rate.

April 29, 2009

Continuing his strong start to the year, Josh Johnson hurled another quality start after allowing three runs in six innings against the Mets in a no-decision. Johnson struck out only three batters on the day while permitting nine hits, but he still wiggled his way out of trouble most of the time.

Our View:

Five starts in to the season Johnson continues to be impressive with a 2.60 ERA and a 8.31 K/9 mark, superb totals for a hurler pegged as a potential breakout star in 2009. So far so good with that line of thought.

April 24, 2009

Josh Johnson was brilliant on Friday, but Matt Lindstrom had a colossal collapse in the ninth inning and Johnson didn't earn a decision. He tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks and struck out eight.

Our View:

It's too bad that Johnson didn't get the win, but his start was a fantasy dream regardless. Aside from one hiccup this season he has arguably been the best pitcher in the National League. His ERA now stands at 2.20.

April 18, 2009

Josh Johnson got knocked around for the first time this season, and by the light-hitting Nationals of all teams. He allowed six runs on six hits and two walks over six innings, but did not factor in the decision.

Our View:

Johnson did strike out six and is averaging almost a strikeout per inning on the season, so fantasy owners were at least able to take something nice away from his start. However, Johnson is a legitimate talent when healthy and should be a top fantasy starter this season.

April 12, 2009

Josh Johnson only allowed one earned run on five hits over nine innings in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Mets at home. He had one walk and seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Johnson earned his first complete game and second win of the season, to go along with 15 strikeouts. It is still very early, but the 25-year-old hurler looks to be headed for a breakout campaign.

April 7, 2009

Josh Johnson collected his first win of the season Tuesday by dominating the Nationals. He hurled six and two-third innings of shutout ball while scattering seven hits and striking out eight.

Our View:

Johnson gave fantasy owners a glimpse of what he can be this season. His health is a concern, as is experience, but if he can find some consistency, his natural talent will allow him to be one of the best starters in the NL.

April 2, 2009

Josh Johnson allowed a run on five hits in four innings against the Cardinals on Thursday.

Our View:

Johnson, who was 7-1 in his return from Tommy John surgery last season, will start the second game of the season for the Marlins. He finishes the spring with a 3.23 ERA.

March 18, 2009

Josh Johnson was stellar in his start Wednesday against the Nationals. He allowed one run over five innings giving up four hits and two walks, but struck out seven.

Our View:

Johnson is starting to look like the ace that Florida hoped he'd become. He has only allowed two runs all spring and he is showing no ill effects since coming back from Tommy John surgery last year. Expect him to build on last season's 7-1 second half record.

March 13, 2009

Josh Johnson was solid against Atlanta on Friday, giving up one run off three hits and one walk while striking out three in three innings of work.

Our View:

Atlanta's run was actually the first Johnson has given up this spring. He's been excellent in three outings thus far, giving up just one run, 11 hits and two walks through 11 innings while striking out seven. Johnson was very effective upon his return from Tommy John surgery in the second half of last year and was stellar before getting hurt in 2006. He's a legit sleeper heading into 2009.

March 4, 2009

Josh Johnson threw four innings Wednesday allowing only one run and striking out four in an exhibition loss to Italy.

Our View:

Johnson looks fully recovered from Tommy John surgery and projects to be a top of the rotation starter for the upstart Marlins. A quality fantasy hurler you can get in the mid to late rounds.
