Newsbreakers

September 6, 2009

Continuing his unpredicatble 2009 on Sunday, Yusmeiro Petit allowed six runs in just three innings of work, as the Rockies blew out the D-Backs 13-5 in Denver.

Our View:

Petit had posted a 2.12 ERA in his previous three starts after posting an 11.25 one in his two prior to those. With the date reading September 6 on the calendar, he's not worth trying to predict at this point.

August 28, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit scattered just four hits over six innings on Thursday night, as the Diamondbacks crushed the Giants 11-0 in San Francisco.

Our View:

Petit is simply impossible to get a read on. He's just as likely to allow six runs in two innings as he is none in seven. Still, his 5.59 ERA should serve as a pretty powerful tiebreaker if you are ever tempted to start him.

August 21, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit held the Astros to one run on four hits and a pair of walks over six innings. He fanned four, but took a hard luck loss as the D-Backs offense took the day off and they fell 1-0.

Our View:

Petit can't buy a win. He falls to 2-8 on the season and even though he puts together a rare productive outing his offense leaves him high and dry. Still, his 6.06 ERA means he's victimized the D-Backs' chances to win plenty of times.

August 16, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit got rocked by the Dodgers on Sunday. He surrendered seven runs on nine hits over just four innings and was saddled with the loss.

Our View:

After a 14-inning scoreless stretch in late July-early August that looked like his season was turning around, Petit has fallen off the road to recovery. He's now allowed 11 runs in his last eight innings.

August 9, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit continued his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde act on Sunday, getting tagged for four runs and nine hits in just four innings one start after allowing one hit and no runs in eight innings. The Snakes lost 9-2 to get swept by the last-place Nationals.

Our View:

Petit just can't be trusted enough to be owned at this point. You can chance that he'll be good in his next start, but chance is the emphasized word.

August 4, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit took a no-hitter into the eighth inning on Tuesday, and eventually he picked up the win as the Diamondbacks shut out the Pirates 6-0. Petit went eight innings and allowed the one hit while walking three and striking out four.

Our View:

Petit has come out of nowhere to win his last two starts, not allowing a run in either outing. He had been getting pounded around all year, so his performance as of late is a bit puzzling. The risk is still too high to add him, but it may be worth it to monitor his performance over the next few starts.

July 29, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit earned his first win of the season Wednesday night, holding the Phillies' powerful lineup to no runs in six innings, as Arizona won 4-0 at home.

Our View:

Wow. Didn't see this one coming. The Phillies had been crushing everything in sight recently, while Petit has rarely met a lineup he couldn't get crushed by. However, his triumph still only lowered his ERA to 6.75, and his WHIP reminds an unsightly 1.62.

July 24, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit was lit up for six earned runs on nine hits over a mere 4.1 innings in Friday's 10-3 loss to the Pirates at Chase Field. He issued one walk with six strikeouts.

Our View:

Petit was dealt a loss, and remains winless over nine starts. He has a 7.68 ERA, and is not fit for fantasy duty.

July 19, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit pitched well on Sunday, but he was outdueled by the Cardinals' Joel Pineiro as the Diamondbacks fell to St. Louis by a score of 2-1. Petit went six innings and allowed two runs on three hits while walking four and striking out six.

Our View:

Petit is still winless on the year, but this was his best start to date of the 2009 season. His ERA is at 7.15 even after this start, but the D-Backs have to be encouraged by this performance. He will need a few more of these before anyone takes him seriously as a fantasy contributor, however.

July 4, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit was lit up in his first start back from the disabled list on Saturday, allowing four earned runs in just three innings of work. The Diamondbacks still won, though, 9-6 in Denver.

Our View:

Petit was not good in 2009 before going on the DL, and there is no reason at this time to add him to your team.

July 4, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that the Diamondbacks have activated starter Yusmeiro Petit to start Saturday's game. Petit has been out of the rotation since he went on the DL in May.

Our View:

Petit is not even a candidate for a spot fantasy start today, as he has been bad this season. It would not be wise to have him on your team, as he has done nothing to show he is worthy of fantasy consideration.

July 1, 2009

According to the Arizona Republic, Yusmeiro Petit is the likely candidate to fill in for the recently demoted Billy Buckner in the Diamondback's rotation.

Our View:

Petit went on the DL in May with a shoulder injury, but is finishing up he rehab and the team apparently feels he's ready to pitch. He was yanked from his rehab start after three innings possibly to save his arm for a call-up. Still, he hasn't pitched well enough to warrant any fantasy consideration.

June 9, 2009

Diamondbacks' righty Yusmeiro Petit threw two scoreless innings during his rehab assignment for Triple-A Reno on Monday, according to the Arizona Republic. Petit has been out since early May with a strained shoulder.

Our View:

Petit is coming along slowly, as he has missed a month with his injury so far. He struggled after taking over for ace Brandon Webb in the D-Backs' rotation, so the team will make sure he is 100 percent before bringing him back.

May 9, 2009

According to ESPN.com, the Diamondbacks placed starter Yusmeiro Petit on the 15-day disabled list today due to a strained shoulder.

Our View:

Petit was filling for ailing ace Brandon Webb, but was doing a poor job of it. The D-Backs are unsure who will man that duty now.

April 8, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit will start Saturday's game against the Dodgers in place of the ailing Brandon Webb (shoulder stiffness), according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Petit held a solid 1.05 WHIP over 56.1 innings last season, with 42 strikeouts. He is worth a look for NL-only leagues for Saturday's spot-start at Chase Field.

March 18, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit is expected to win a spot in the Diamondbacks' bullpen, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:

Petit held a 1.05 WHIP over 56.1 innings last season, but with only 42 strikeouts. He would not hold much value as a reliever, but could be in line for spot-starts, depending on injuries.

March 6, 2009

Yusmeiro Petit allowed a run in three innings of work in Arizona's 4-2 win against Mexico.

Our View:

The 24-year-old Petit appeared in 19 games last season, including eight starts, and posted a 3-5 record to go along with a 4.31 ERA.
