Newsbreakers

September 6, 2009

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that Twins' pitcher Glen Perkins may file a grievance against the team due to the way the team handled his most recent injury. The team has shut him down for the season, which will prevent him from qualifying for salary arbitration after this season.

Our View:

It sounds like things are getting a bit heated between Perkins and the Twins, as the team is claiming Perkins was cleared to pitch but got a second opinion on his injured shoulder. We won't know much until Perkins actually files the grievance, but it doesn't look like he will pitch again this season.

September 1, 2009

Glen Perkins was activated off the DL on Monday and immediately optioned to Triple-A Rochester, according to MLB.com. Perkins had been on the DL since August 12 with shoulder tendinitis.

Our View:

Perkins is hoping to rejoin the team at some point this month, be he needs to get some work in for the Triple-A team first. The rotation is hurting badly right now, and they will welcome him back as soon as he is ready.

August 29, 2009

Glen Perkins is slated to throw one inning today in Fort Myers, Florida, according to the Star Tribune. He is recovering from tendinitis in his left shoulder.

Our View:

Perkins looks to be on target to return to Minnesota at some point in September, but is only worth holding in AL-only leagues.

August 13, 2009

Twins' starter Glen Perkins will not need surgery on his ailing shoulder, according to beat writer Joe Christensen. Perkins got the results back from his second MRI and it showed no major structural damage.

Our View:

This is great news for Perkins, and the hope is now that he will be able to return sometime in September. He has been awful as of late, but if he can get healthy he should be able to help the team make a run at the playoffs.

August 12, 2009

The Associated Press reports that Glen Perkins will have a second MRI on his ailing left shoulder.

Our View:

Perkins' first MRI was inconclusive, but Perkins has been placed on the DL with shoulder tendinitis. The shoulder has obviously affected his performance as he has an ERA well over 8.00 in his last seven starts.

August 11, 2009

Updating an earlier report, Glen Perkins has been placed on the 15-day DL with a left shoulder strain, according to the Associated Press. The club is yet to announce an adjoining move.

Our View:

Perkins was dropped from the Twins' rotation after acquiring Carl Pavano via trade from Cleveland, and his fantasy outlook for the remainder of the season does not look bright after going 12-4 in 2008.

August 11, 2009

Glen Perkins indicated that his MRI on his ailing left shoulder showed no immediate concerns, according to LaVelle E. Neal's (Star Tribune) twitter page.

Our View:

This is encouraging, but Perkins added that there is still some investigating to do regarding his shoulder. He has been struggling on the mound, and the MRI was precautionary.

August 10, 2009

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting on his Twitter page that Twins' starter Glen Perkins is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday. The team hopes to have the results back before opening their next series against Kansas City.

Our View:

Perkins has been awful as of late, so hopefully the MRI can tell the team exactly what it wrong. Perkins is out of the rotation for the time being, but the results of the test may determine if he stays out for the rest of the season. Either way, nobody should be owning Perkins at this point.

August 2, 2009

Glen Perkins was destroyed by the Angels on Sunday. He was touched for nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits and a walk over just four innings. He took the loss as the Twins were battered to the tune of a 13-4 loss.

Our View:

Since July 1st, Perkins has been miserable. He has just one quality start in his last five outing and is face to face with an ugly 5.95 ERA. He has allowed eight runs in two of his last three starts. It might be time to bench him.

July 27, 2009

Glen Perkins bounced back with a quality start after getting annihilated in his previous won, improving to 6-6 after allowing three runs off six hits and one walk with three strikeouts in seven innings against the White Sox.

Our View:

It was a nice night for Perkins, but he's still far too shaky and strikes out far to few batters to be considered an option in anything but the deepest AL-only leagues.

July 23, 2009

It has been determined that Glen Perkins is dealing with tendinitis in his left shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Perkins will receive treatment on his ailing shoulder over the next few days, and believes he will be ready to make his next scheduled start Monday against Chicago. Perkins noted that he felt a lot better today.

July 22, 2009

Glen Perkins was roughed up for eight earned runs on six hits over a lone inning of work in Wednesday's 16-1 loss at Oakland.

Our View:

Perkins has given up 16 earned runs over his last three starts, and had another disappointing outing for fantasy owners after going 12-4 in 2008.

July 17, 2009

Glen Perkins picked up the win on Friday as the Twins downed the Rangers by a score of 5-3. Perkins went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Perkins was just ok tonight, but his offense gave him enough to get a win. He is still a pretty solid fantasy play, so owners should keep running him out there every fifth day.

July 11, 2009

Glen Perkins was rocked for five earned runs on eight hits over a mere 4.1 innings in Saturday's 8-7 loss to the rival White Sox at the Metrodome. He had two walks and one strikeout.

Our View:

Perkins takes a loss for his poor outing, and now has a losing record at 4-5. He was a disappointment after only allowing one earned run in each of his previous two starts. Perkins is worth keeping active in fantasy leagues.

July 10, 2009

Glen Perkins is slated to start Saturday's game against the White Sox, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

He was initially scheduled to pitch Friday, but was pushed back while dealing with a fever and sore throat. He will be a risky fantasy option, as the illness could potentially compromise his stamina and ability to pitch deep into the game.

July 9, 2009

The Miami Herald is reporting that Twins' starter Glen Perkins arrived at the stadium still dealing with sickness on Thursday. He left to visit a doctor, and he is not going to be able to make his start on Friday. Nick Blackburn will move up in the rotation to start Friday night.

Our View:

Perkins is getting tested for strep throat, and he was still in bad shape today. The team hopes he can be ready to go by Sunday, because they will need a spot starter if he isn't. We will keep you posted on his condition over the weekend.

July 8, 2009

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that Twins' scheduled starter Glen Perkins has been scratched from Wednesday night's game due to illness. He will be replaced on the mound by Anthony Swarzak.

Our View:

Perkins is said to be running a high fever and feeling pretty bad, so he will be unable to go tonight. Swarzak will get in the nod in his place, so adjust your rosters accordingly. We will update you on when Perkins will be scheduled to start again.

July 1, 2009

Glen Perkins only issued one earned run on 10 hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 5-1 win at Kansas City. He had no walks and one strikeout.

Our View:

Perkins evens his record to 4-4, and has earned a win in back-to-back starts. He allowed two or less earned runs in three of his last four starts as well, and should be employed in fantasy lineups for his next trip to the hill.

June 26, 2009

Glen Perkins was in control from the hill in Friday's 3-1 win at St. Louis, as he only issued one earned run on four hits over seven innings. He had no walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Perkins bounced back well from his last outing when he gave up four runs in a loss to Houston. He has allowed two or less earned runs in two of his last three starts, and is worth penciling into fantasy lineups for his next turn in the Twins' rotation.

June 21, 2009

Glen Perkins was rocked for four earned runs on nine hits over seven innings in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Astros at the Metrodome. He had one walk and one strikeout.

Our View:

Perkins continues to be a disappointment this season, as his record falls to 2-4 and his ERA climbs to 5.10. He only has one win over his last seven starts.

June 16, 2009

Glen Perkins was solid in his return from the DL (elbow inflammation), as he only gave up two earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Tuesday's 8-2 win over the Pirates at the Metrodome. He had one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View:

Perkins should be safe to employ in fantasy lineups again, evidenced by his performance tonight. This was his first start since May 18.

June 15, 2009

The Star-Tribune reports that Glen Perkins will be activated from the 15-day DL on Tuesday. He has not piptched since May 18 when he allowed six runs in 0.2 innings at Yankee Stadium. He was placed on the DL with elbow inflammation following that start.

Our View:

Hopefully Perkins can rebound strong from the injury, but don't invest much hope in him. He had an up and down season in 2008 which ended with a 4.41 ERA and 25 home runs in 151 innings of work.

June 6, 2009

According to the Star-Tribune, Glen Perkins' elbow felt fine in his rehab start on Thursday.

Our View:

Perkins felt good, but wasn't effective. He allowed five runs on six hits (including two homers) in his rehab start and will require at least one more before moving forward.

June 4, 2009

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that Glen Perkins will make a minor league rehab start for Single-A Fort Myers on Thursday. He will be on a 70-pitch limit, and he is expected to make a second start on Tuesday before being activated by the team.

Our View:

Perkins was not very good before the injury, but fantasy owners may want to monitor him upon his return to the club. AL-only teams could possibly use him, but unless he is significantly better than he was early in the season, he will have no mixed league value.

May 20, 2009

Pitching coach Rick Anderson said the Twins received good news on Glen Perkins, as there is nothing seriously wrong with his ailing left elbow, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View:

Perkins is expected to return to the Twins' rotation when eligible to come off the 15-day DL. He held a 5.36 ERA over eight starts prior to going down.

May 18, 2009

The Sports Network reports that the Twins placed Glen Perkins on the 15-day DL after lasting just 0.2 innings against the Yankees on Monday night. He is dealing with left elbow inflammation. Sean Henn will take his spot on the roster.

Our View:

After three starts this season, Perkins looked poised for a breakout campaign. However in his last five starts he has surrendered 24 runs in 23 innings. Something isn't right. Hopefully the injury does not turn out to be a serious one.

May 18, 2009

Glen Perkins left Monday's start early, but he managed to give up seven hits, two home runs, and six earned runs before he hitting the showers.

Our View:

What happens when a flyball pitcher goes to Yankee Stadium? Apparently he doesn't last very long. Perkins has allowed at least four runs in each of his last five starts. That's a total of 24 runs in 23 innings. Ouch! He went eight innings in his first three games of the season, but he has been a notch worse than terrible since then.

May 14, 2009

Glen Perkins struggled again on Wednesday and did not factor into the decision in the Twins' 14-10 win. Perkins went 5.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits while walking four and striking out four.

Our View:

Perkins' numbers aren't terrible, but his fantasy value is still not great. He could be an option in deeper mixed leagues, but don't expect any huge strikeout games any time soon.

May 2, 2009

Glen Perkins allowed five earned runs on 10 hits over six innings in Saturday's 10-7 loss to the Royals at the HHH Metrodome. He fired four strikeouts with no walks.

Our View:

The Twins had a 6-5 lead when he exited the game, and was dealt a no-decision rather than a loss. Perkins only has one win over five starts, and collected exactly four strikeouts in every outing.

April 26, 2009

Glen Perkins had his worst outing of the year on Sunday, going five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked two, taking the loss for the Twins.

Our View:

Perkins has been a pleasant surprise so far this season but he is only 1-2 on the year. His ERA is at 2.48 after this start, so his numbers are still very good, but he will most likely have more starts like this.

April 19, 2009

Glen Perkins tossed eight strong innings as the Twins beat the Angels 3-1 on Sunday. He allowed four hits, a walk, and an earned run, while striking out four.

Our View:

Perkins is having a solid start to the season as he has allowed only four runs through 24 innings. He is not a strike out pitcher, but he limits his base runners and goes deep into games. One of the bigger concerns with Perkins is whether he can stay strong down the stretch.

April 14, 2009

Glen Perkins was denied a win for the second straight start despite pitching brilliantly once again. He allowed just two runs on seven hits and a walk over eight innings as the Twins eventually won 3-2 in the 11th.

Our View:

Two quality starts, only three runs allowed in 16 innings and nothing to show for it. Perkins could be a nice pick up if you're looking for a starter. He won't help much in strikeout-heavy leagues, but could be a good innings eater with a quality ERA.

April 9, 2009

Glen Perkins only allowed one earned run on five hits over eight innings in Thursday's 2-0 loss to the Mariners at the HHH Metrodome, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

It was a solid season debut for Perkins, but he was dealt a loss due to no offensive help from his teammates. He only lost four times over 26 starts in 2008.

March 30, 2009

Glen Perkins had another strong outing as Minnesota beat the Rays 3-2 on Monday. He allowed four hits, a walk, and no runs while striking out four batters through six innings.

Our View:

Perkins does not get many strikeouts, but he is taken deep often. In 151 innings last season, he allowed 25 home runs. He does not walk many batters, but he may want to consider pitching out of the strike zone more often as he allowed 183 hits in those 151 innings. He may be worth a look in AL-only formats, but there's not much reason to think he will be an effective starter for the next six months.

March 30, 2009

Glen Perkins will make his sixth spring start today against the Rays, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View:

Perkins holds a solid 2.25 ERA so far, and is worth a look as a flier for AL-only leagues with the rising Twins.

March 20, 2009

Glen Perkins threw five scoreless innings, with only one hit allowed, in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Yankees. He had one walk and one strikeout.

Our View:

Perkins has pitched well so far in spring training, and is worth targeting as a flier for AL-only leagues.

March 15, 2009

Glen Perkins allowed three earned runs on five hits over three innings as the Twins fell 5-1 to the Yankees on Sunday.

Our View:

He had given up just two earned runs in his first 12 innings this spring. However, he has remained hittable throughout it all, with 16 hits over 15 innings. He won't walk many hitters, but he'll give up far too many home runs in the process. The 26-year-old is a mediocre option and not nearly as good as his 12-4 record suggests.

March 6, 2009

Glen Perkins hurled four scoreless innings, with only one hit allowed, in Friday's 3-0 win over the Reds, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Perkins is now 2-0 this spring and is yet to allow an earned run. Perkins will not be a viable source for strikeouts and had trouble keeping the ball in the park last season making his upside, and therefore outlook, less than spectacular.
