Newsbreakers

October 3, 2009

Jeff Niemann won his 13th game of the season with a five-inning, two-run performance against the Yankees on Saturday. He held the Bombers to six hits and a walk and fanned five in the 5-3 win.

Our View:

Niemann was putting together an impressive rookie campaign before falling apart his last three starts. It's nice to see him get back on the winning track, but the ROY has likely slipped though his fingers.

September 28, 2009

Jeff Niemann was tagged for four earned runs on seven hits over a mere 3.1 innings in Monday's 7-6 win over the Orioles at Tropicana Field. He had three walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann had a tough outing, and is lucky the Rays scored enough runs for him to take a no-decision. He is winless over his last six starts.

September 22, 2009

Jeff Niemann gave up three earned runs on four hits over 6.2 innings in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Seattle at Tropicana Field. He had four walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied at 3-3 when Niemann exited, so he ends the night with a no-decision rather than a loss. He is winless over his last five starts.

September 15, 2009

Jeff Niemann was tagged for six earned runs on 11 hits over 4.1 innings in Tuesday's 10-5 loss at Baltimore. He had one walk with six strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann fell off track after allowing two or less earned runs in each of his previous three starts. He still leads the Rays with 12 wins and a 3.80 ERA, and should be able to bounce back fine.

September 9, 2009

Jeff Niemann only issued one earned run on eight hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 4-2 loss at New York. He had one walk and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann had a strong outing, but was forced to settle for a no-decision due to poor run support from his teammates. He allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last three starts, and trimmed his ERA to 3.57.

September 4, 2009

Jeff Niemann pitched well in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Tigers at Tropicana Field, as he only allowed one earned run on six hits over 7.2 innings. He had two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann pitched very well tonight, and it is a shame he had to settle for a no-decision due to poor run support from his teammates. On the positive side, he has not taken a loss over his last seven starts.

August 30, 2009

Jeff Niemann was good on Sunday, but his bullpen couldn't hold the lead as the Rays fell to the Tigers 4-3. Niemann went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three.

Our View:

Niemann was rock solid today, but his bullpen wasn't. It was unlucky for fantasy owners that he didn't get the win, but owners have to be happy with his performance today.

August 24, 2009

Jeff Niemann gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits over 6.1 innings in Monday's 12-7 win at Toronto. He had three walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

It was not a solid outing for Niemann, but the Rays provided plenty of offensive firepower for him to collect his 12th win of 2009. He allowed four or more earned runs in three of his five starts this month, but was not dealt any losses over the span.

August 19, 2009

Jeff Niemann was in control from the hill in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Orioles at Tropicana Field, as he only allowed one earned run on seven hits over 7.1 innings. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann collected his team-leading 11th win of 2009, and is 2-0 over four starts this month. Keep him active in fantasy lineups for his next turn in the Rays' rotation.

August 1, 2009

Jeff Niemann was in control from the hill in Saturday's 7-1 win over the Royals at Tropicana Field, as he only issued one earned run on four hits over eight innings. He had no walks and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann collected his team-leading 10th win of 2009, and bounced back well from his last start when he was tagged for five earned runs over 6.2 innings at Toronto.

July 26, 2009

Jeff Niemann fell to 9-5 on Sunday as the Rays dropped the final game of their series against the Blue Jays. Niemann went 6.2 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out six.

Our View:

Niemann is still the team's leader in wins, and his ERA is solid at 3.81. Today wasn't his best effort, but overall he has been more than solid this season. Expect starts like this to be rare, as he has shown he is a capable fantasy pitcher.

July 21, 2009

Jeff Niemann only allowed two earned runs on eight hits over eight innings in Tuesday's 3-2 win at Chicago. He issued no walks and racked up seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann collected his team-leading ninth win of 2009, and has not taken a loss over his last eight outings. He should remain a good fantasy starter with a strong supporting cast in Tampa Bay.

July 10, 2009

Jeff Niemann dazzled in Friday's 6-0 win over Oakland at Tropicana Field, as he only issued six hits over nine scoreless innings. He had three walks and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann collected his team-leading eighth win of the season, and his second complete game and shutout. The rising star should continue to pitch well with the defending AL champs.

July 3, 2009

According to the Tampa Tribune, the Rays plan to skip Jeff Niemann's next start.

Our View:

Matt Garza will get the start in his stead on Sunday. Then next week's series against Toronto will feature Scott Kazmir, James Shields and David price. Niemann will be available out of the bullpen.

June 29, 2009

Jeff Niemann enjoyed a strong outing in Monday's 4-1 win at Toronto, as he only issued one earned run on four hits over 7.1 innings. He had two walks and one strikeout.

Our View:

Niemann improves to 7-4 for the season, and has allowed two or less earned runs in five of his last seven starts. Keep the rising star active in fantasy lineups.

June 21, 2009

Jeff Niemann allowed two earned runs on three hits over four innings in Sunday's 10-6 win at the Mets. He issued four walks with no strikeouts.

Our View:

The Mets were leading 2-0 when Niemann exited, so he takes a no-decision. He remains 2-0 over four starts in June, and continues to lead Tampa Bay with six wins.

June 16, 2009

Jeff Niemann gave up three earned runs on five hits over five innings in Tuesday's 12-4 win at Colorado. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann leads the Rays with six wins, and is 2-0 over three starts in June. He is worth employing in AL-only leagues for his next trip to the mound.

June 3, 2009

Jeff Niemann tossed a complete game shutout in Wednesday's 9-0 win over the Royals. He allowed just two hits and struck out nine hitters while throwing exactly 100 pitches to get 27 outs.

Our View:

Niemann has not lasted six innings in seven of his 11 starts this season as he is not known to be an efficient pitcher. He clearly was efficient with his stuff tonight. He dropped his ERA from 4.44 to 3.77 with tonight's outing and is worth a look in AL-only formats. If you had him starting tonight, you were one of few.

May 28, 2009

Jeff Niemann was hit with the loss on Thursday as the Rays fell to the Indians 2-1. Niemann went three innings and allowed one run on five hits while walking one and striking out four. He was removed after a lengthy rain delay.

Our View:

Niemann was kind of unlucky today, as he had only given up one run before the rain delay, and his team could not give him any run support when play resumed. Niemann actually pitched pretty well, striking out four in three innings, but it is unclear how long he will remain in the rotation now that David Price is up.

May 18, 2009

Jeff Niemann made his best and longest start of this season in Monday's 13-4 win over Oakland. He gave up four runs, three earned, over eight innings while giving up eight hits, no walks and striking out three.

Our View:

The A's offense has been cold for a while now, and Niemann was able to take advantage. He has been serviceable as the Rays fifth starter, but with David Price heating up, Niemann may only be in the rotation for another month.

May 13, 2009

Jeff Niemann was solid on Wednesday in the Rays' 8-6 victory over the Orioles. Niemann went five innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out two.

Our View:

Niemann hasn't been great so far this season, and the thought is that he is still keeping a spot in the rotation warm for David Price. Price has been struggling a bit in Triple-A, so starts like this will keep Niemann in the rotation for a good while longer. He is only an option in AL-only leagues.

May 2, 2009

Jeff Niemann was lit up for six runs (five earned) on seven hits over a mere three innings of work in Saturday's 10-6 loss to Boston at Tropicana Field. He issued three walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Niemann falls to 2-3, and had his two-game winning streak snapped. He has 14 walks over 25.1 innings pitched, and will need to improve his control if he expects to hold off David Price from taking his spot in the rotation.

April 23, 2009

Jeff Niemann pitched well on Wednesday, and his offense gave him plenty of support as the Rays beat the Mariners 9-3. Niemann picked up his first win of the season.

Our View:

This was Niemann's best start of the year, but he is still just keeping the spot in the rotation warm for David Price. His fantasy value is slim since he doesn't figure to be in the rotation for long.

April 5, 2009

With Jason Hammel's move to Colorado looking all but official, it appears the Jeff Niemann will enter 2009 as Tampa Bay's No. 5 starter.

Our View:

Both Niemann and Hammel have looked decent this spring. Given that each was out of minor league options, the Rays had been looking to deal one of them, happy to go with whichever wasn't dealt to slot into the back of the rotation until David Price is deemed ready to get called up. Thus, Niemann is not too attractive of a fantasy commodity, as he'd really have to pitch lights out over the first month or two of the season if he wants any shot at holding onto his spot. He'll likely get his first start either Saturday or Sunday against Baltimore.

April 4, 2009

Jeff Niemann or Jason Hammel could be dealt to the Rockies at some point this weekend, according to MLBFanhouse.com.

Our View:

Both pitchers are out of options, but would have a shot to start in the Rockies' rotation if dealt. The Rockies' current rotation includes Aaron Cook, Ubaldo Jimenez, Franklin Morales, Jason Marquis and Jorge De La Rosa.

March 30, 2009

Jeff Niemann tossed six innings, needing just 68 pitches, in an intrasquad game on Monday, according to the Tampa Tribune. "I felt real good today; I was executing everything," Niemann said.

Our View:

Niemann still hopes to land the fifth spot in the Rays rotation, but given that he is out of options he figures to at least make the club as a bullpen arm if he hasn't done enough to convince the team he is ready for a prime time roll.

March 21, 2009

Jeff Niemann was charged with nine runs on seven hits in a relief appearance against Toronto Friday, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Niemann only allowed one earned run over his first 11 innings of work in spring training, and should remain in the running for the fifth spot in the Rays' rotation.

March 12, 2009

Jeff Niemann may be a candidate to close for the Rays this season, according to Buster Olney of ESPN. He has pitched very well this spring and could be a nice 9th inning option if Troy Percival isn't fully healthy.

Our View:

The fact of the matter is that Troy Percival is never really fully healthy, so this Niemann scenario might hold some water. If he gets the nod at closer he instantly becomes a viable fantasy player. Stay tuned.

March 3, 2009

Jeff Niemann allowed one earned run on two hits over three innings in Tuesday's 12-2 win over the Astros, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

This was a solid outing for Niemann, but he has a long way to go to earn the fifth spot in the Rays' rotation while competing with favorite David Price.

February 27, 2009

Jeff Niemann pitched well on Friday, picking up the win against Boston while giving up just one hit and striking out two in two scoreless innings.

Our View:

Niemann still has a ways to go to win the fifth and final spot in Tampa Bay's rotation over uber-prospect David Price, as well as Mitch Talbot and Jason Hammel, though Friday was a good start.

February 1, 2009

Rays' pitcher and former No. 1 selection Jeff Niemann is out of minor league options meaning the team will have to find a place on their roster for him, trade him, or risk passing him through waivers, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

The 6-foot-9 right-hander will be 26 by opening day, but he has tons of strikeout potential. The Rays are pretty well set with their rotation, barring injury, so they will be faced with a tough decision in the near future.
