Ryan Garko will not return to the Giants in 2010.

Our View:

He was non-tendered by the club on Saturday. He was a huge disappointment in 2009 after coming over from Cleveland in a midseason trade, batting just .235 in 115 at-bats.

September 17, 2009

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Ryan Garko has become a forgotten man in San Francisco.

Our View:

Garko hasn't started since September 6th and has just two at-bats in the Giants last nine games. Manager Bruce Bochy has shifted Pablo Sandoval from third to first base to get Juan Uribe's hot bat into the lineup and Garko is ultimately left riding the pine. He's hitting just .232 since coming to the Giants.

August 22, 2009

Ryan Garko pounded two home runs in the Giants' 14-11 loss to the Rockies on Saturday. Garko went 2-for-5 with the two bombs, two runs scored, and four RBI in the game.

Our View:

Garko started off slowly for the Giants after he was traded, but over the last four days he has had two four-RBI games. The Giants need his bat to heat up, and it looks like it is doing so at the right time.

August 18, 2009

Ryan Garko plated four of his fellow Giants on Tuesday in a ten-inning, 8-5 win over the Reds.

Our View:

Garko has been quiet since coming over from Cleveland. Tuesday's performance doubled his RBI total as a Giant and certainly improved his .208 average coming into the game.

August 5, 2009

Ryan Garko picked up his second and third Giants RBI on Wednesday, as San Francisco spanked Houston 10-6 on the road.

Our View:

Garko now has a hit in four straight games. He's doing exactly what the Giants hoped he would, and should be a valuable contributor as the team fights for a playoff spot.

July 27, 2009

Ryan Garko has reportedly been dealt from the Indians to the Giants in exchange for left-handed pitching prospect Scott Barnes and a player to be named later, according to Ed Price's (of MLB Fanhouse) twitter page.

Our View:

If this trade is true, the Giants helped fill their need for a corner infielder. Garko is batting .285 with 11 homers this season, and now has a better supporting cast in San Francisco after leaving the struggling Indians.

July 24, 2009

According to a report at MLB.com, Indians' first baseman Ryan Garko may be the next member of the team to get shipped in a trade. Garko is arbitration-eligible after this season, and the Indians don't want to give him a pay raise since they have other options at first base.

Our View:

The team has already shipped Mark DeRosa and Rafael Betancourt, and Garko looks like a good candidate to be next. He is starting to play more, but with Victor Martinez seeing time at first and with top prospect Matt LaPorta seeing time at first in the minors, it looks like Garko will be expendable. We will update any movement by the Indians and Garko leading up to the deadline.

July 10, 2009

Ryan Garko went 1-for-3 with a solo homer off Edwin Jackson in tonight's 5-1 loss at Detroit.

Our View:

The Indians only had four hits in the game, and Garko was their lone source of scoring. Garko is riding a 10-game hitting streak, with two homers over the span.

June 21, 2009

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Ryan Garko is not in Sunday's lineup due to a sprained wrist.

Our View:

Garko injured the wrist on Wednesday and will give way to Chris Giminez at first, while Victor Martinez slides in behind the plate to do the catching.

May 25, 2009

Ryan Garko led a come from behind attack as the Indians defeated the Rays 11-10 on Monday. The first baseman was 3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI, and two runs scored. His second home run came with two on and two outs in the ninth inning.

Our View:

Garko has struggled through May as he has hit just .171 prior to today's game. He has shown throughout his career that he is a better hitter than this. He is not playing consistently and probably should not join fantasy teams until he is.

April 19, 2009

Ryan Garko went 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk, two RBI, and a run scored in the Indians 7-3 loss to the Yankees on Sunday.

Our View:

The Indians are finding consistent at bats for Garko despite plenty of other players seemingly blocking his way. He started in right field today and hit seventh in the lineup.

January 22, 2009

Manager Eric Wedge commented on Ryan Garko's future in the outfield for 2009, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Wedge said, "We're going to work out Garko and Josh Barfield in the outfield in spring training. It might not make it through spring training. It might not make it to one spring training game, but we'll see. If Garko is going to hit like he did in the second half last year, that's a bat we want in the lineup. I love Barfield's athleticism and speed. In the past, we've always been at our best when we've been the most versatile."

Our View:

Garko tied Grady Sizemore for the club lead with 90 RBI in only 141 games played last season, but will be competing for a starting spot in a very crowded outfield that includes Shin-Soo Choo, Ben Francisco, David Dellucci and now Barfield.

January 16, 2009

Ryan Garko will try his hand at outfield during spring training. "He doesn't know [if he can do it],and I don't know if he can do it yet, either," manager Eric Wedge admits to MLB.com. Garko was a catcher when drafted and now plays first base.

Our View:

The Indians have a first base/catcher/DH logjam with Garko, Victor Martinez, Travis Hafner, and Kelly Shoppach, but a move to outfield doesn't really help the playing time woes. Grady Sizemore, Shin-Soo Choo, Ben Francisco, and David Dellucci are in the outfield, and prospects Matt LaPorta, Trevor Crowe, and Michael Brantley are rising quickly. We're not sure this news really helps Garko's chances of finding at-bats.
