Newsbreakers

May 3, 2009

According to the Tacoma News Tribune, the Mariners have signed Jerry Owens to a minor league deal. Owens was dumped by the White Sox to make room for Scott Podsednik.

Our View:

Owens is a speedster, swiping 32 bags in 2007, but has never been much of a hitter. Even if he gets promoted from Triple-A he won't make a ripple in fantasy pools.

May 2, 2009

Jerry Owens has chosen free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Charlotte, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Owens has elite speed, but went 1-for-12 with three strikeouts prior to getting demoted by the Sox. He is not likely going to find regular playing time with another MLB club this season.

May 1, 2009

Jerry Owens was outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte by the White Sox, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Owens has great speed, but struggled at the plate with one hit and three strikeouts over 12 at-bats with the Sox.

April 30, 2009

The Chicago Sun-Times suggests that Jerry Owens may have played his last game with the White Sox. Owens was packing a large duffel bag and shaking hands with teammates and clubhouse staff following Wednesday's win over the Mariners.

Our View:

Owens is hitting .083 over 12 at-bats this season, with threee strikeouts. Scott Podsednik is hitting well at Triple-A, and could be a top candidate to replace Owens in center field with Brian Anderson nursing a strained oblique.

April 28, 2009

Jerry Owens will start in left field in the first game of tonight's doubleheader against the Mariners at U.S. Cellular Field, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Carlos Quentin will serve in the DH role with Jim Thome nursing a heel ailment. Owens will bat leadoff, and is worth consideration as an option for speed in deeper AL-only leagues.
