Newsbreakers

October 12, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez struck out seven Phillies in seven innings in game four of the NLDS on Monday night, but took a no-decision as the Rockies blew a 4-2 lead, and Philadelphia won 5-4.

Our View:

The Phils advanced to the NLCS with the win. Jimenez finished the 2009 postseason with a 5.25 ERA in two starts, but was better than that number would indicate, and will be a Cy Young candidate in 2010.

October 11, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez will start Game 4 against the Phillies on Monday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Jason Marquis was also being considered to take the mound.

Our View:

Jimenez was the Rockies best pitcher this season despite getting off to a dreadful start. He was having a very good start in Game 1 before things took a turn for the worse in the fifth inning. He could benefit from the cold weather in Denver which usually affects hitters more than pitchers.

October 7, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez looked like he was going to cruise through his outing in the NLDS opener, but the wheels came off in the fifth inning and the Rockies fell 5-1 to the Phillies in Game 1.

Our View:

Jimenez shut down a potent Phillies lineup for four innings, but allowed two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth without recording an out. He was yanked after the five runs and finished with nine hits allowed and a walk over five frames. It took him 92 pitches to get through five-plus, with 56 going for strikes.

October 4, 2009

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Ubaldo Jimenez will likely be the Rockies' Game 1 starter against the Phillies. Jimenez is 15-12 with a 3.47 ERA this season.

Our View:

Jimenez is a good choice to be the Game 1 starter for manager Jim Tracy. He has been the team's most dominant pitcher as of late, and he figures to match up against Cole Hamels of the Phillies.

September 27, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez allowed four runs on six hits and three walks over seven innings of a 6-3 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. He fanned seven, but fell to 14-12 on the season.

Our View:

Jimenez's previous start was a beauty, but it's been sandwiched by two disappointing ones. Saturday's defeat not only elevated his ERA, but cost the Rockies a game in the Wild Card standings to the red hot Atlanta Braves.

September 20, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez picked up his 14th win of the season on Sunday as the Rockies extended their Wild Card lead with a 5-1 victory over the Diamondbacks. Jimenez went seven innings and allowed one run on five hits while walking three and striking out eight.

Our View:

Jimenez has been excellent for most of the season, and his 3.47 ERA is outstanding. He is a power arm with plenty of strikeout capability, and as long as he keeps the walks down he should continue to put together plenty of quality starts.

September 16, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez was shelled by the Giants on Tuesday night. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks before being yanked after just 2.2 innings in the 10-2 loss.

Our View:

Jimenez has been dominant since April ended this season and took over the role of ace for the Rockies. That's why it was strange to see him lay an egg Tuesday (his worst outing of the season) with such high Wild Card implications on the line.

September 9, 2009

If a Thursday bullpen session goes well, Ubaldo Jimenez will make his scheduled start on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Jimenez tweaked the groin in his previous start on Monday. He's probably 50/50 at this point to go on Saturday.

September 7, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez gave up three earned runs on six hits over six innings in Monday's 4-3 win over the Reds at Coors Field. He had three walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

The Reds were leading 3-1 when Jimenez exited, so he ends the day with a no-decision for his decent outing. Jimenez allowed two or less earned runs in each of his previous seven starts heading into today's game.

September 2, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez shined against the Mets on Wednesday, allowing just two runs on five hits and a walk over eight innings. He fanned four and earned his 14th win in the 5-2 victory.

Our View:

Jimenez was unbelievable in the month of August, going 5-1 with a sparkling 1.77 ERA and looked just as dominant in his outing on Wednesday. He's a big reason Colorado is leading in the Wild Card race.

August 28, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez pitched seven tough innings against the Giants on Friday night, allowing just two runs in seven innings, but got out-dueled by Tim Lincecum in a 2-0 San Francisco win, falling to 12-10 on the season.

Our View:

Perhaps the most impressive number in an all-around impressive 2009 for Jimenez is his WHIP of 1.22, which signifies just how much he's cut down on baserunners this season. By contrast, he had a 1.43 WHIP in 2008.

August 23, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez allowed two earned runs on six hits over eight innings in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Giants at Coors Field. He had two walks and fired nine strikeouts. All of the damage came on a two-run homer by Edgar Renteria.

Our View:

Jimenez is riding a five-game winning streak, and continues to lead the Rockies with 12 wins for 2009. He allowed two or less earned runs in each outing over that span.

August 18, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez effectively neutralized a recently potent Washington attack on Tuesday. He allowed just two runs on seven hits and a walk over eight innings, fanned five and earned his 11th victory in the 4-3 win.

Our View:

Jimenez has dominated in August with four straight quality starts and hasn't allowed more than two runs in any outing over that stretch. Tuesday's outing was especially impressive considering he only allowed on walk.

August 12, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez had one of his finest starts of the season on Wednesday en route to improving to 10-9. The hard throwing righty stuck out six Pirates in eight scoreless innings as the Rockies won 8-0 at home.

Our View:

Ubaldo's maturation into a pitcher from a thrower is one of the major leagues' best stories this season. Look for him to be a factor for years to come.

August 7, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez improved to 9-9 on Friday, limiting the Cubs to two runs in 6.2 innings while striking out six. The Rockies won 6-2.

Our View:

He did walk five batters, but has kept his stuff mostly under control in 2009. He's slowly developing into of the best starters in the National League.

August 1, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez only surrendered two earned runs on five hits over eight innings in Saturday's 6-2 win at Cincinnati. He issued no walks and fired eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Jimenez collected his well-deserved eighth win of 2009, and is off to a good start in August after going 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA over five starts last month.

July 27, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez allowed three earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Monday's 7-3 loss at New York. He had two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied 3-3 when Jimenez exited, so he takes a no-decision rather than a loss. Jimenez has allowed three earned runs in each of his last three starts, and his ERA remains at 3.85 for the season.

July 22, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez wasn't at his sharpest on Wednesday, allowing there runs and throwing 120 pitches in just six innings, but still helped the Rockies edge Arizona 4-3.

Our View:

Ubaldo is still prone to walking a lot of batters, but has done a much better job of not letting them score in 2009. He is amongst the NL league leaders in strikeouts, and has a solid 3.85 ERA.

July 18, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez had the good stuff on Friday night as the Rockies beat the Padres by the score of 5-3. Jimenez went seven innings and allowed three runs on three hits while walking four and striking out ten.

Our View:

The walk total is still a bit high, but the strikeouts were there as usual. He is a very tempting fantasy play, but he doesn't put together enough solid outings to be a consistent option. If you want to take the risk, go for it, but don't be shocked when the bad outings come.

July 5, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez was rocked for four earned runs on four hits over 6.1 innings in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks at Coors Field. He issued five walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Jimenez drops to 6-8, and is winless over his last three starts. He is a viable source for strikeouts, but leaves a bit to be desired as a fantasy hurler.

June 30, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez only gave up two earned runs on five hits over seven innings in Monday's 4-2 loss at the Dodgers. He issued one walk with four strikeouts. The battle took 13 innings to decide a victor.

Our View:

Jimemez takes a no-decision, and closes out June with a 3-1 mark over five starts. He should be penciled into fantasy lineups for his next trip to the mound.

June 24, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez took the loss on Tuesday, giving up four earned runs in seven innings as the Angels defeated the Rockies 4-3.

Our View:

It still wasn't a bad start like many Ubaldo losses have been in the past, and the the young righty has quietly become very consistent for the Rockies this season. If he's not already permanently owned in any of your leagues, it is probably time to make him so.

June 18, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez failed to go seven innings for the first time in three starts on Thursday, but still got his sixth win of the season as he struck out seven in 6.2 innings of work in the Rockies 4-3 win over the Rays.

Our View:

He still walked three batters, but Ubaldo has developed into a very consistent pitcher since his shaky April. He has gone seven innings or more in six of his ten starts since then and has only allowed more than three earned runs twice. He also continues to rack up strikeouts and now has 76 on the season.

June 12, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez gave up four earned runs on eight hits over nine innings in Friday's 6-4 win over Seattle at Coors Field. He had four walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

It was not a strong outing for Jimenez, but he did go the distance for the win. He has wins in back-to-back starts, and collected his first complete game of the season. He is worth using in NL-only leagues for his next start.

June 7, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez sparkled against the Cardinals on Sunday. He allowed just two runs on four hits and a walk over eight innings. He fanned nine on the day and was credited with his fourth win.

Our View:

Jimenez was awful in April, but has been excellent since May 1st. He's rattled off seven quality starts in his last eight outings and Sunday's effort was by far his most dominant of the season. He's a solid option in mixed leagues.

May 27, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez was roughed up by the Dodgers on Wednesday. He allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out five, but fell to 3-6 on the season.

Our View:

Jimenez who was awful in April (7.58 ERA) has been amazing in May, until Wednesday's start. Before getting lit up he had five quality starts in a row and a 2.38 ERA this month. He looks like he's found a way to harness his incredible stuff and can be considered a quality fantasy starter.

May 22, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez collected seven strikeouts in seven innings, but fell to 3-5 on the season in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Tigers. He gave up six hits, a walk and three earned runs.

Our View:

Jimenez had three straight outings prior to this in which he allowed just one earned run. Despite the loss, this was not a terrible outing in an AL park for Jimenez.

May 17, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez struck out seven hitters over six innings while allowing just one run against the Pirates on Sunday. However, his bullpen gave up 10 runs in the final three frames and Colorado fell 11-4.

Our View:

Jimenez has allowed just one earned run in each of his last three starts, following a 19 inning stretch in which he gave up 19 earned runs. He has looked like a different pitcher in May, but we still don't consider him exceptionally trustworthy. His last three opponents have been the Pirates, Astros, and Giants.

May 6, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez struck out six in seven innings as the Rockies defeated the Giants 11-1 on Wednesday. He allowed five hits, a walk, and just one run while improving to 2-4 on the season.

Our View:

Jimenez had allowed 19 runs in his last 19 innings, so the Rockies needed to see an outing like this from him. Jimenez has the potential to be a very good fantasy pitcher because of his strikeout ability, but he still struggles with consistency.

April 25, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez had his third straight short outing as the Rockies fell to the Dodgers 6-5 on Saturday. He gave up eight hits, walked four, and allowed six runs while taking his third loss of the season.

Our View:

Jimenez has been a disaster after his seven shutout innings in his first appearance. Since then he has walked 14 batters in 12 innings while surrendering 16 earned runs.

April 19, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez lasted just 4.1 innings in a 14-2 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday. He allowed seven hits, four walks, and seven earned runs while striking out three hitters.

Our View:

Jimenez lasted just 3.2 innings in his last outing following an excellent initial start. He does not figure to be in danger of losing his starting job, but the Rockies would probably like to see what Jason Hammel could do as a starter.

April 13, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez struggled mightily on Monday, taking the loss and allowing three earned runs in just 3.2 innings pitched. He struck out five but walked six in his short work.

Our View:

After being lights out in his first start, Jimenez showed the control issues that have plagued him most of his career. The six walks are enough to scare you, but he will have some days like this. He will also have some days like he did in his first start, where he struck out eight in seven scoreless innings.

April 8, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez pitched seven innings of shutout ball against the D'Backs on Tuesday. He did not allow a run and surrendered just four hits while walking three and striking out eight.

Our View:

The Rockies could not have asked for more than Jimenez in his season debut. He made mincemeat out of a lineup that had ravaged the pitching staff one day earlier and he showed good stamina in throwing 107 pitches.

March 23, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez pitched six scoreless innings against the Brewers on Monday. He allowed only three hits, walked two batters, and struck out two.

Our View:

This start for Jimenez was encouraging, in that he allowed very few hits while extending himself. Twelve wins and a 3.99 ERA (his stats from '08) are great for a middle-of-the-road starter, but the presumptive ace in Colorado will need to be a workhorse this season, which means logging 200 innings for the first time.

March 17, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez allowed eight runs on six hits and three walks in less than five innings Tuesday.

Our View:

Jimenez has great stuff and plenty of movement on all his pitches, but consistency and control issues have always been his downfall. If he can fix his command he could be elite. Until then, consider him a late option at the back end of your rotation at best.

February 24, 2009

Ubaldo Jimenez has been assured of starting for the Dominican Republican during the upcoming World Baseball Classic by managers Felipe Alou and Mario Soto, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View:

Four of Jimenez's teammates will also participate in the tournament. Outfielder Brad Hawpe and catcher Chris Ianetta will play for the U.S., reliever Jason Grilli will play for the Italians, and Manny Corpas will pitch for Panama.

January 27, 2009

Updating an earlier report, starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez's new deal from the Colorado Rockies guarantees him at least $10 million, according to the Associated Press. That figure may grow to $22 million if club options for 2013 and 2014 are exercised.

Our View:

Jimenez may very well become the Rockies' staff ace entering Spring Training if left-hander Jeff Francis is unable to recover from reoccurring shoulder problems in time.

January 27, 2009

The Rockies and pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez have agreed to a four-year deal that includes club options for 2013 and 2014, the Rocky Mountain News reports. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View:

The Rockies locked up Jeff Francis in December of 2006 and Aaron Cook in December of 2007. They hope Jimenez, 25, can emerge as the ace. He is one of the league's hardest-throwing starters, but he needs to refine his control (103 walks in 2008). Fantasy owners typically try to avoid Rockies starters, but Jimenez is a rare exception. He could come at a nice discount for 2009.

January 27, 2009

The Rockies would like to ink Ubaldo Jimenez to a contract extension, according to the Denver Post. GM Dan O'Dowd said, "It is on our agenda, absolutely. But we would not want to drag that into spring training."

Our View:

He pitched 198.2 innings in 2008, and the Rockies view the 25-year-old as a cornerstone for their rotation. He looks to be a sleeper candidate for 2009, as he ended last season strong with only seven earned runs allowed over his four starts in September, with 10 strikeouts coming in his finale at Arizona, when he also hurled seven scoreless innings.
