Newsbreakers

December 13, 2009

Brian Bannister avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $2.3 million deal with the Royals, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:

Bannister has been just barely good enough to start for Kansas City the past three seasons, but certainly not good enough to draw any fantasy consideration. Expect him to compete and likely secure a starting role for 2010, though he's still unlikely to make any fantasy impact.

September 12, 2009

The Kansas City Star reports that Brian Bannister (shoulder fatigue) will not pitch again in 2009.

Our View:

He last pitched on September 2nd. In 26 starts in 2009, Bannister went 7-12 with a 4.73 ERA.

September 10, 2009

According to the Twitter page of the Kansas City Star's Bob Dutton, starting pitcher Brian Bannister will get a second opinion on his fatigued throwing shoulder. Bannister may be done for the season due to the injury.

Our View:

Bannister came back and had a pretty nice season for the Royals this year, but it's not looking good for him to return. His shoulder hasn't been improving, but we should know something more definitive after he meets with the second doctor.

September 3, 2009

Brian Bannister is dealing with progressively worsening shoulder fatigue, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:

He was forced to leave the team's game on Wednesday with the injury. Bannister says it is not a sharp pain, so he does not believe it is serious, but just soreness. He will almost certainly not take his next turn in the rotation.

September 2, 2009

Brian Bannister exited Tuesday's start at Oakland in the second inning with an apparent injury, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Bannister was rocked for three innings in the first inning, and is believed to be dealing with shoulder fatigue. Yasuhiko Yabuta replaced Bannister on the hill.

August 29, 2009

Brian Bannister allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a pair of walks over 6.2 innings on Friday. He fanned six but was saddled with his 11th loss of the season as the Tigers doubled up the Royals 6-3.

Our View:

Bannister has been brutal in August. He has allowed four or more runs in each of his last five starts and has has allowed seven in three of those. His ERA jumped from 3.59 to 4.50 over that stretch.

August 23, 2009

Brian Bannister issued four earned runs on six hits over six innings in Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Twins at Kauffman Stadium. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Bannister was dealt his 10th loss of the season, and is 1-3 with a dismal 7.20 ERA over five starts this month. He is only an option for deeper fantasy leagues right now.

August 17, 2009

Brian Bannister was roughed up for seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits over seven innings in Monday's 8-7 loss at Chicago. He had three walks and six strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View:

The Royals tied the game at seven in the top of the eighth inning, allowing Bannister to take a no-decision rather than a loss for his dismal performance. He is winless over his last three starts, and gave up seven runs in each outing over the span.

August 12, 2009

Brian Bannister got shelled on Wednesday after allowing five runs in the first inning to the Twins. He finished the day with seven earned in six innings and allowed nine hits and a walk in the 7-1 loss.

Our View:

Bannister has now allowed seven runs in each of his last two starts. With the two miscues his ERA ballooned from a very respectable 3.59 to a disappointing 4.26.

August 7, 2009

Brian Bannister was lit up for seven earned runs on seven hits over four innings in Friday's 9-4 loss to the Athletics at Kauffman Stadium. He had three walk and one strikeout.

Our View:

Bannister now has a losing record at 7-8 following his nightmarish outing. He was a grave disappointment after hurling seven scoreless innings at Tampa Bay in his last start, and looks to remain an unstable fantasy option.

August 2, 2009

Brian Bannister was superb against Tampa Bay on Sunday, shutting out the Rays through seven off five hits and zero walks with seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Bannister got back to .500 with the win at 7-7. He's been very solid since the end of June, but remember that he can sometimes get himself into trouble when he's not on his best control given that he usually pitches to contact.

July 31, 2009

According to the South Florid Sun-Sentinel, the Royals rejected overtures from the Marlins for Brian Bannister.

Our View:

Interest around Bannister has swelled lately, but it appears the Royals aren't willing to just give him up. In addition to the Marlins, the Yankees were involved at one point as well, but the deal fell apart due to money issues. Bannister is only 28 and is signed through 2012. He'll earn just $1.7 million this season and as a cheap, reliable option the Royals likely won't move him unless someone blows them away with an offer.

July 22, 2009

Brian Bannister was tagged for four earned runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings in Wednesday's 9-6 loss to the Angels at Kauffman Stadium. He had no walks and five strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View:

Bannister had a tough night on the hill, and was dealt a no-decision. He allowed two or less earned runs in each of his previous four starts, and should be able to bounce back fine.

July 17, 2009

Brian Bannister pitched pretty well on Friday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Royals fell to the Rays by a score of 8-7. Bannister went five innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking four and striking out three.

Our View:

Bannister should have gotten the win tonight, as his offense gave him plenty of runs, but his bullpen let him down. He wasn't dominating, but he gave his team a chance, and that's all you can ask. He is still a decent fantasy option, but don't expect the wins to come rolling in while he is in Kansas City.

July 10, 2009

Brian Bannister pitched well in tonight's 1-0 loss at Boston, as he only allowed one earned run on three hits over 7.2 innings. He issued four walks with seven strikeouts.

Our View:

It is a shame that Bannister is forced to take his seventh loss of the season tonight due to no support from his teammates. He was dealt a loss in four of his last five starts, despite allowing two or less earned runs four times over the span. His fantasy stock would be higher if he pitched for a better team than Kansas City (37-49).

July 5, 2009

Brian Bannister only surrendered two earned runs on five hits over six innings in Sunday's 6-3 win over the White Sox at Kauffman Stadium. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Bannister evened his record to 6-6, and trimmed his ERA to 3.87. He snapped a three-game losing streak, and allowed two or less earned runs in five of his last six starts. He should be employed in fantasy lineups for his next outing.

June 30, 2009

Brian Bannister only issued two runs (one earned) on six hits over seven innings in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Twins at Kauffman Stadium. He had one walk and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

Bannister pitched well, and it is a shame he is forced to take a loss due to poor run support from his teammates. He now has a losing record at 5-6, and has lost in three straight starts.

June 25, 2009

Brian Bannister was lit up for five earned runs on six hits over six innings in Thursday's 5-4 loss at Houston. He issued two walks with three strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View:

Bannister is now 5-5 with a 4.17 ERA. He gave up two or less earned runs in each of his previous three starts and is worth keeping active in AL-only leagues though.

June 20, 2009

Brian Bannister was solid again on Saturday, but he was hit with the loss as the Royals fell to the Cardinals 7-1. Bannister went eight innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out four.

Our View:

Matching up against Cards' ace Chris Carpeter is never good for opposing starters, and Bannister found out tonight that you have to be nearly perfect to win that matchup. Nothing to be disappointed about for Bannister, as he remains a solid fantasy starter. He should be owned in most leagues, so if he is available you should give him a look.

June 14, 2009

Brian Bannister was excellent on Sunday as the Royals pounded the Reds by a score of 7-1. Bannister went eight innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Bannister was stellar on this hill today, and he has turned himself into a pretty solid pitching option. He won't strike many guys out, but he figures to be fairly consistent in most of his starts.

May 24, 2009

Brian Bannister moved to 4-1 on the season with his win Sunday at St. Louis. Bannister went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four.

Our View:

Bannister has been solid since being called up earlier this year, and it this point he should probably be owned in most leagues. He has never been a strikeout pitcher, but he can provide quality starts to a fantasy owner.

May 19, 2009

Brian Bannister struggled on Tuesday against the Indians, but his team bailed him out of a loss with their four-run ninth. Bannister went six innings and allowed five runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out four. The Royals won the game 6-5.

Our View:

Bannister got hit hard for the first time this season tonight, but overall he has still been very good. He still has some value in mixed leagues, but watch to see if he makes a few more starts like this. If he has a couple bad outings in a row, get rid of him.

May 14, 2009

Brian Bannister exited Wednesday's start against the A's due to pain in his right shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

The severity of the ailment is yet to be determined, but he expects to make his next turn in the rotation May 19 versus the Indians. He is 3-1 over five starts, with a solid 1.80 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.

May 7, 2009

Brian Bannister continued his dominance on Thursday as the Royals beat the Mariners 3-1. Bannister went six innings and did not allow a run while striking out seven and walking one.

Our View:

Bannister has been nearly unhittable since being recalled from Triple-A, and he continued throwing well today. Bannister doubled his strikeout total in today's outing, and if he strikes hitters out his value will be very high. Right now he is a must-have in AL-only leagues for sure and is probably a must-pickup in mixed leagues as well.

April 27, 2009

Brian Bannister was exceptional for the second straight outing as he led the Royals to a 7-1 win over the Blue Jays on Monday. He walked six, but only allowed one hit and one earned run while improving to 2-0.

Our View:

Bannister is looking like a hot pickup at the moment, but we recall his hot start in 2008 which was followed by a mostly poor season. Still, he appears to be worth the risk and he is not in any danger of losing his spot in the rotation despite starting the season in the minors.

April 22, 2009

Brian Bannister was masterful in his first start since being recalled from Triple-A, throwing six innings of shutout ball. He walked two and struck out one in the Royals 2-0 win over the Indians.

Our View:

Bannister was very good tonight, as he out-dueled reigning Cy Young winner Cliff Lee. Bannister is going to be in the Royals rotation for the foreseeable future, and he is worth a look in AL-only leagues. It may be wise to give him another start or two before picking him up.

April 21, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that the Royals have recalled Brian Bannister from Triple-A Omaha. Bannister will take the roster spot vacated by Doug Waechter, who was placed on the 15-day DL. Bannister will start Wednesday night's game against Cleveland.

Our View:

Bannister struggled mightily during the spring, and was subsequently sent to the minors to work on his stuff. He was working on a nine inning scoreless streak in Omaha upon his promotion. He is still not much of a fantasy option unless he comes out on fire for the Royals.

March 14, 2009

Brian Bannister took another beating on Saturday when he allowed six runs in 4.2 innings to the Diamondbacks. He gave up nine hits, including a home run, a walk, and struck out two.

Our View:

Bannister has not performed well this spring, but there's little indication to suggest he won't make the opening day roster. Regardless, he serves little purpose in fantasy leagues.

March 9, 2009

Brian Bannister got roughed up a bit by the Cubs on Monday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over three innings.

Our View:

Bannister's ERA was near six last year, so starts like this certainly aren't encouraging.

February 28, 2009

Brian Bannister was perfect for the Royals on Saturday in his two inning start.

Our View:

Bannister isn't expected to have a lot of fantasy value playing for the Royals in 2009 after going 9-16 in 32 starts with an ERA near six in 2008. He's still worth keeping an eye on, as he pitched well in 2007.

February 4, 2009

MLB.com reports that Brian Bannister anticipates a bounceback season similar to that of Zack Greinke's bounceback after his poor second season. For the first time in his career, Bannister has worked through the offseason with a personal trainer and is reportedly in the best shape of his career.

Our View:

Bannister finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2007, so his 9-16 record last season was a disappointment. Bannister has the potential to be a viable fantasy pitcher. After his solid start last season, he absolutely tanked as the year wore on. Perhaps his offseason workouts will prevent him from doing so again in 2009.

February 3, 2009

The Kansas City Royals signed Brian Bannister to a one-year $1.7 million dollar contract, according to the New York Post.

Our View:

Bannister struggled last year, going 9-16 with a 5.76 ERA last season. The Royals are hoping he can return to his 2007 form when he won 12 games and had an ERA of 3.87.
