Newsbreakers

December 17, 2009

Ricky Nolasco and the Marlins have agreed to a one-year, $3.8 million deal, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Our View:

Nolasco finished 13-9 with a 5.06 ERA and 1.25 WHIP last season, though that was in large part due to early-season struggles that were erased after a minor league stint. After the All-Star break, Nolasco went 7-2 with a 4.39 ERA and 1.12 WHIP along with 105 strikeouts in 94.1 innings and makes for a potential sleeper heading into drafts next year.

September 30, 2009

Ricky Nolasco mowed down the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night, striking out 16 batters in 7.2 innings of work, as Florida won 5-4 on the road.

Our View:

The 16 strikeouts were a major league best for the 2009 season for any pitcher. The game was a fitting end to an up and down season for the burly righty, as he went 13-9 with a 5.06 ERA and 195 strikeouts in 31 starts.

September 25, 2009

Ricky Nolasco gave up three earned runs on four hits over seven innings in Friday's 6-5 home loss to the Mets. He had one walk and fired strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied at 3-3 when Nolasco exited, so he takes a no-decision rather than a loss. He had a decent performance, and fantasy owners should be pleased with his seven strikeouts.

September 19, 2009

Ricky Nolasco fanned ten Reds en route to his 12th win this season. He allowed just two runs on four hits and a walk over seven innings in the 3-2 victory.

Our View:

Nolasco can rattle off games like this and appear to be one of the more dominant hurlers in the league. Unfortunately he's about as consistent as the stock market. His last start he allowed seven runs in five innings. That's been a running trend in 2009.

September 14, 2009

Ricky Nolasco was lit up for seven earned runs on 10 hits over five innings in Monday's 11-6 loss at St. Louis. He had no walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:

Nolasco had his two-game winning streak snapped, and is now 11-9 with a 5.46 ERA. This marked his worst start since August 12, when he was assaulted for 10 earned runs over 3.1 innings against the Astros.

September 9, 2009

Ricky Nolasco kept the Mets in check on Wednesday night, limiting them to three runs in 6.1 innings, as the Marlins won 7-3 at Citi Field.

Our View:

Nolasco is now 11-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 11 stats in 2009.

September 3, 2009

Ricky Nolasco put together a quality start for the Marlins on Thursday as Florida beat the Braves by a score of 8-3. Nolasco went six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Our View:

Nolasco has been very good about producing quality starts in the second half, and he is always very good with the strikeouts. His ERA isn't great, but he is worth a play because he can pick up wins and strike hitters out.

August 29, 2009

Ricky Nolasco struck out seven Padres in 5.1 innings on Saturday night, but also allowed three runs as the Marlins lost 7-4 at home.

Our View:

Nolasco's season ERA still sits at an ugly 5.30, but the hard throwing righty has still managed to throw six quality starts in his last 11 outings, striking out 77 batters in the process.

August 23, 2009

Ricky Nolasco surrendered four earned runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings in Sunday's 7-5 loss at Atlanta. He had three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

Nolasco was handed a no-decision rather than a loss for his weak outing, and was a disappointment after only allowing two earned runs over nine innings in his last start at Houston. He looks to remain inconsistent as a fantasy hurler, but is much too talented not to pencil into fantasy lineups.

August 18, 2009

Ricky Nolasco mowed down the Astros on Tuesday and earned a complete game victory. He allowed just two runs on three hits and fanned ten against zero walks in the 6-2 win.

Our View:

The talented starter has had a disappointing season, but brought his A-game on Tuesday. Quite a bounce back outing after allowing ten runs over 3.1 innings in his previous start. If you can stay away from his meltdown outings he's a nice own.

August 12, 2009

Ricky Nolasco got utterly rocked on Wednesday night, allowing ten runs in just 3.1 innings, as the Marlins got crushed at home 14-6 by the Astros.

Our View:

Nolasco is now 8-8 on the season. The outing marked the sixth time this season that he had given up more than five runs in a start, though he had put together four straight quality starts until tonight. He's still a great arm in all formats.

August 7, 2009

Ricky Nolasco kept the best offense in the National League in-check on Friday night. The burly righty struck out seven in seven innings, while allowing just two runs, as the Marlins beat the Phillies 3-2 on the road.

Our View:

Nolasco's renaissance continues, and if he stays hot, he could prove to be a huge factor in playoff races down the stretch.

August 2, 2009

Ricky Nolasco dominated the Cubs on Sunday. He held the Northsiders to just one run on four hits and a walk over seven innings. He fanned eight, but didn't factor in the decision as Cody Ross won the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Our View:

Nolasco was demoted in May because of poor performance and his 9.07 ERA. He rebounded in June with a 3-1 record and 1.91 ERA and was solid in July as well going 2-1 with a 3.51 mark. Looks like he finally has things figured out. Start him regularly.

July 28, 2009

Ricky Nolasco was very good again on Tuesday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Marlins beat the Braves 4-3. Nolasco went seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five.

Our View:

Nolasco didn't pile up the strikeouts tonight, but he was effective. He should no longer be viewed as the guy who struggled enough to be sent down to the minors in the first half, as he has been outstanding since being recalled. Expect him to be very good for the most part the rest of the way, and with his strikeout ability he has the stuff to dominate most lineups.

July 22, 2009

Ricky Nolasco mowed down the Padres on Wednesday to earn his seventh win. The burly righty strike out ten, while allowing just two hits, in 6.1 innings, as the Marlins cruised to a 5-0 victory.

Our View:

Nolasco has simply been a different pitcher since he was sent down to the minor leagues to iron out his mechanics. He had been hit hard in his last two starts, but his ability to adjust and get back on track today is a great sign for the Marlins going forward.

July 10, 2009

Ricky Nolasco was lit up for seven earned runs on nine hits over six innings in Friday's 8-0 loss at Arizona. He had one walk and eight strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View:

Nolasco now has a losing record at 6-7, but allowed two or less earned runs in each of his previous six starts, and should be able to get back on track following tonight's nightmarish performance.

July 5, 2009

Ricky Nolasco absolutely dominated the Pirates on Sunday in the Marlins' 5-0 win. Nolasco went eight shutout innings and allowed only three hits while walking two and striking out 12. He is now 6-6 on the year.

Our View:

Nolasco has now won his last four decisions, and he looked today like the top fantasy option many people expected him to be before the season started. The trip to the minors obviously did something to him, because he has been outstanding since returning to the team. He is a must start in all leagues at this point.

June 29, 2009

Ricky Nolasco only allowed two earned runs on four hits over eight innings in Monday's 4-2 loss to the Nationals at home. He had no walks and fired eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Nolasco collected his third straight win, and allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last five starts. He is finally pitching up to high expectations after struggling in May with a 1-3 record and a 12.23 ERA.

June 24, 2009

Ricky Nolasco allowed two runs (none earned) on seven hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Orioles at home. He issued one walk and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Nolasco has won in back-to-back starts, and allowed two or less earned runs in each of his four outings this month. He turned his season around after going 1-3 with a terrible 12.23 ERA in May.

June 18, 2009

Ricky Nolasco pitched a rain shortened one hit complete game on Thursday night as the Marlins won 2-1 in Fenway Park.

Our View:

Nolasco has rediscovered his mojo after getting recalled from the minors. He is now 1-1 with 18 strikeouts in 18 innings, while allowing only five earned runs, since the call up. He is once again safe to place in your starting lineup.

June 12, 2009

Ricky Nolasco only allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings in Friday's 7-3 win at Toronto. He had one walk and racked up nine strikeouts.

Our View:

The Jays were leading 2-1 when he exited, so Nolasco took a no-decision. He lost in his previous three starts, and this was an encouraging outing for him.

June 7, 2009

Ricky Nolasco fared well in his first start since being recalled from Triple-A, but took a tough luck loss on Sunday. He allowed just two earned runs on ten hits and three walks over seven innings, but fell to 2-6 after a 3-2 loss to the Giants.

Our View:

Nolasco has been terrible this season, but it looks like that demotion to the minors might have kick started him back into gear. It may be best to wait one more start before inserting him back into lineups. Just to make sure he really does have it figured out.

June 7, 2009

Ricky Nolasco has been recalled by the Marlins from Triple-A New Orleans, according to TSN. The club sent down Tim Wood as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Nolasco will start tonight's home game against the Giants. Nolasco struggled this season prior to being demoted, but he won 15 games in 2008, and fared well in the minors. He is worth consideration for fantasy lineups, and should be scooped up if dropped to the waiver wire during his stint in the minors.

June 5, 2009

The Miami Herald is reporting that Marlins' opening day starter Ricky Nolasco will be recalled from Triple-A to start on Sunday. Nolasco will take the rotation spot of Anibal Snachez, who was injured during his bullpen session Thursday.

Our View:

Nolasco looked very solid during his stint in the minors, and you would have to believe that he will be better this time around. Anyone who held onto Nolasco should be prepared to start him on Sunday, and hopefully he returns to the pitcher we saw in the second half last year.

June 3, 2009

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Ricky Nolasco will have another minor league start on Saturday and then the Marlins will decide whether he's rejoin the rotation.

Our View:

Nolasco has looked very good in both of his "seasoning starts" in the minors and all signs point to him returning if he has another strong outing on Saturday. The Marlins will have to decide on who gets bumped from the rotation should he return. It will likely be between Andrew Miller and Sean West.

June 1, 2009

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting that Ricky Nolasco was impressive in his second minor league start on Monday. Nolasco went seven innings and allowed one run on six hits while walking one and striking out five in the game.

Our View:

Nolasco now has a 2.40 ERA in two starts in Triple-A, and it looks like he has started to figure out what's wrong. His potential is still sky high, and he is expected to return to the Marlins' rotation soon. If he was dropped in your league, you may want to jump on him now and hope he has it figured out.

May 23, 2009

Ricky Nolasco, who was optioned to the minors after his most recent shelling this season, will make at least two starts at Triple-A New Orleans before the Marlins consider about calling him back up to the big leagues, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Nolasco has been awful this season, but given the fact that he's still been able to maintain a fine K:BB rate and has suffered from a high BABIP, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see him dominate minor league hitters and be back in Florida sometime from early-to-mid June. He's still worth owning in most formats and league sizes given his great potential, and should probably be plucked off waivers if he's been let go in your league.

May 23, 2009

The AP reports that Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans after allowing eight runs in two innings to the Rays on Friday.

Our View:

Nolasco won 15 games a season ago and few pitchers dominated the second half as much as he did. Hopefuly he can work out whatever his problems are at Triple-A and return to the Marlins after a few starts. For a pitcher with as much potential as this, we find it hard to recommend letting him go. If you can afford to wait on him, we think you should.

May 22, 2009

Ricky Nolasco's nightmare season continued on Friday as he surrendered eight runs in only two innings as the Rays defeated the Marlins 15-2. Both Carlos Pena and Dioner Navarro hit home runs off the struggling hurler.

Our View:

When will it end? Maybe not soon. The Marlins got a tough schedule running over the course of the next month, and things only get hairier as they are matched up with the AL East in interleague play.

May 20, 2009

Ricky Nolasco threw 76 pitches Monday before rain ended his outing, and he is slated to pitch on three-day's rest Friday against the Rays, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:

Nolasco has been a disappointment so far this season while coming off a solid 2008 campaign - but he still has time to get on track and should remain employed in fantasy lineups. He is 2-4 over eight starts, with a 7.78 ERA.

May 18, 2009

Ricky Nolasco had struck out five batters while shutting out the Diamondbacks over 3.1 innings on Monday. However, the game was rained out and his solid outing will be voided.

Our View:

This is unfortunate for Nolasco's owners as they have been desperately awaiting a strong effort from Nolasco.

May 13, 2009

Ricky Nolasco got blasted again on Wednesday. The Brewers punished him to the tune of eight runs on seven hits and two walks over just 3.2 innings. Nolasco took his fourth loss as the Marlins fell 8-6.

Our View:

Nolasco has been awful this season after coming in with high expectations. He sports a bloated 7.78 ERA and can't seem to get anyone out at this point in the season. He may be better served on your bench until he turns things around. Pray for a flaw in his delivery or tipped pitches or something.

May 3, 2009

Ricky Nolasco had another poor outing on Sunday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits over six innings. He allowed two home runs and took the loss as the Marlins fell 6-4 to the Cubs.

Our View:

Nolasco has been awful this season after coming in with high expectations. He is now 1-3 with a 7.03 ERA in six starts. Fantasy owners have to be frustrated with his performance so far and may be best left on the bench until he figures it out.

April 22, 2009

Ricky Nolasco allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits over six innings in Wedesday's 7-4 loss at Pittsburgh. He had five strikeouts and issued three walks.

Our View:

Nolasco is yet to play up to high expectations this season, as he fell to 1-2 with a 6.86 ERA over his first four starts. He has not won since opening day (against the Nationals).

April 11, 2009

Ricky Nolasco got knocked around for the second straight start on Saturday, only this time he didn't get the win as the Marlins fell to the Mets 8-4. He allowed four runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over just five innings. He is now 1-1 on the season.

Our View:

Nolasco appeared primed for a big season, but has gotten off to a rough start in 2009. Owners could deal with the bad ERA in his first start because he made up for it with a win and six Ks in six innings. This one though didn't have a silver lining.

April 6, 2009

Ricky Nolasco struck out six batters in six innings in the Marlins' 12-6 win over the Nationals on Monday. He gave up six hits and four earned runs while picking up his first win of the season.

Our View:

Although it was not an impressive outing for the Marlins ace, he did manage to pick up a win. He was lights out in the second half of last season, and the Marlins are expecting another strong season from him in 2009.

April 6, 2009

Ricky Nolasco is set to take the hill in Monday's season opener against the Nationals, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Our View:

Nolasco held a solid 1.10 WHIP over 212.1 innings last season, and is being counted on as the ace of the Marlins' rotation in 2009. He should get off to a solid start at home against Washington, who lost 102 games last year.

March 22, 2009

Ricky Nolasco threw seven brilliant innings without surrendering a hit to the Tigers on Sunday. He also struck out eight hitters.

Our View:

Nolasco has won three games this spring and is beginning to assert himself as a major fantasy player as a front-end member of the Florida rotation.

March 12, 2009

Ricky Nolasco outdueled Johan Santana on Thursday night, giving up one run off three hits and one walk while striking out four in four innings of work.

Our View:

Nolasco emerged as a fantasy stud last season, and while he was roughed up in his first spring start, he's given up just one run and six combined hit and walks in eight innings since. If his past two outings provide any indication, Nolasco could be in line to build off his excellent 2008 season and threaten to gain status as one of the elite pitchers in the game.

February 28, 2009

Ricky Nolasco didn't look good in his first start of the spring on Saturday, getting tagged for four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits in three innings. He did manage to fan three without walking anyone.

Our View:

Nolasco won 15 games in 2008 with an ERA of 3.52, so this was probably just a poor outing. We expect him to be better his next time out, but we'll keep you posted.

February 17, 2009

Ricky Nolasco was very effective in a bullpen session Sunday and catcher John Baker remarked that he looked as if he was throwing in August, according to FishStripes.com.

Our View:

Nolasco will be competing to be the No. 1 starter in the Marlins' rotation, and is off to a good start. The 26-year-old looks to be a hot fantasy target for 2009, and should be a solid source for strikeouts in the very least.

January 22, 2009

Ricky Nolasco intends to be the Marlins' opening day starting pitcher, according to MLB.com. Nolasco said, "It's been on my mind the whole offseason. It's something I want to do."

Our View:

Nolasco made a strong case to be their No. 1 starter, as he nailed down 15 wins last season, with 186 strikeouts and a 1.10 WHIP over 212.1 innings. The 26-year-old looks to be a hot fantasy target for 2009.

January 20, 2009

The Marlins have avoided salary arbitration with pitcher Ricky Nolasco by signing him to a one-year deal worth $2.4 million, according to the Miami Herald. The deal includes incentives.

Our View:

Nolasco nailed down 15 wins for the Marlins last season, while maintaining a solid 1.10 WHIP. He also fired 186 strikeouts over 212.1 innings and the 26-year-old looks to be a favorable fantasy target for 2009.
