According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates reached out to free agent reliever Kevin Gregg.
The two parties have had conversations, and the Buccos have been looking for help at the back end of their bullpen all offseason. Gregg lost his closer's job last season with the Cubs and posted a 4.72 ERA in 72 games, but he would represent an upgrade over anyone the Pirates currently have. His fantasy value would get a significant boost if he returned to the closer role.
Kevin Gregg's agent met with the Orioles this week, according to the Baltimore Sun.
Baltimore is probably one of the few team's in the majors with a weak enough bullpen where Gregg could have a chance at the closing gig, so he could gain a bit of fantasy relevance if he happens to sign there.
MLB.com is reporting that Cubs' relief pitcher Kevin Gregg has filed for free agency. Gregg is a Type-A free agent, so the Cubs would receive a first-round pick if another team chooses to sign him.
The first-round pick only comes into play if the team is drafting after pick 15, as the Cubs would get a sandwich pick if a team in the top half signs him. The Cubs have their closer for 2010 in Carlos Marmol, so Gregg would be a better fit elsewhere.
Carrie Muskat reports via Twitter that Cubs reliever Kevin Gregg has been shut down for the season.
Gregg is apparently in a lot of pain and has been diagnosed with a crack in his rib cartilage. The Cubs don't want to push him and have him pitch through the injury, so he joins Rich Harden, Alfonso Soriano and Angel Guzman on the sidelines.
Kevin Gregg will be sidelined for at least the rest of the weekend with mild rib inflammation, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Given that he's no longer the Cubs' closer, we hope that this news does not have any affect on your fantasy team.
ESPN.com is reporting that Cubs' manager Lou Pinella may remove Kevin Gregg from the closer's role after another blown save Monday night. "I think we're going to make some changes as far as what we're going to do late innings," Piniella said after the game. "[The tough losses] all end the same way -- with a home run ball. We'll see what we'll do."
Pinella hasn't announced who would assume the closer's role if he does make a move, but it would appear to be either Carlos Marmol or Angel Guzman. If you are a Gregg owner, it would be a good idea to grab Marmol if he is available, as he will likely get the first opportunity.
Cubs' manager Lou Pinella told the Chicago Tribune that he plans to give closer Kevin Gregg another night off Tuesday. Gregg is suffering from a tired arm.
Gregg blew two consecutive saves over the weekend, so the Cubs want to make sure he is ready to go before they send him back out for the ninth. He should be back in another day or so, so fantasy owners have nothing to be concerned about for now.
Kevin Gregg is out for tonight's game at Cincinnati due to a tired arm, according to Gordon Wittenmyer's twitter page.
That could explain why Gregg blew back-to-back save chances over the weekend. Carlos Marmol will serve as the Cubs' closer tonight if needed.
Kevin Gregg allowed two solo home runs in the ninth inning and subsequently blew his fifth save of the season as the Cubs lost to the Marlins 3-2.
Gregg has now blown back to back saves to kick of the month of August and is causing some concern in the Cubs' bullpen. With Carlos Marmol looming, Gregg had better shape up quickly or he'll lose his job.
Kevin Gregg is in skipper Lou Piniella's doghouse after Gregg blew a save Tuesday against the Tigers, according to MLBblogs.com. Piniella said, "I did not say we were going to make any changes, but I am saying, late in the game, you have to keep the ball in the ballpark if you want to have a lot of success in these shorter roles ... It is not the easiest thing in the world to save a one-run game."
Gregg has blown three saves over 14 chances, but has only given up two runs over 11 innings so far in June. Regardless, he could be on thin ice as the Cubs' closer right now.
Kevin Gregg picked up his first win of the season on Thursday, pitching a scoreless ninth inning as the Cubs rallied to beat the White Sox 6-5.
The Cubs closer also pushed his ERA below 4.00 for the first time since May 12.
Kevin Gregg picked up just his seventh save of the season on Wednesday. He pitched a scoreless ninth allowing two walks and no hits in the Cubs 5-2 win.
Gregg has been a disappointment this season. Today's save was his first since May 10th and his ERA sits at a bloated 5.12.
Although it is only May 6, Kevin Gregg has already picked up four saves in May. On Wednesday, he threw a perfect ninth inning while striking out one in the Cubs 6-3 win over the Astros.
Gregg got off to a rough start with the Cubs and he was not able to get into many save situations in April. He is 4-for-4 in those situations to start May and the Cubs appear to have restored confidence in Gregg as their closer.
MLB.com reports that Kevin Gregg expects his velocity to rise as the season progresses and his left knee continues to gain strength.
If Gregg gets completely healthy, he may just retain his job as closer, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Carlos Marmol to take over at some point.
According to Bruce Miles of the Arlington Daily Herald, Kevin Gregg is not going to be used in the 8th inning of games due to stiffening of his knee when he sits after pitching.
While Gregg is still the closer, his knee issues do not appear to be getting any better. Carlos Marmol could find himself in the closer role sooner than later.
Kevin Gregg worked the ninth inning in Sunday's 8-5 win over the Brewers. He allowed two hits, including a Rickie Weeks solo home run, and walked another batter while recording the final three outs.
Carlos Marmol worked the eighth inning, meaning Gregg still appears to have the closer's job. However, he has not pitched well over his first four appearances and it seems like only a matter of time before the Cubs elect to close out with Marmol.
Kevin Gregg recorded the final out in the eighth inning, but then only got one in the ninth as the wheels came off. He blew the save and was tagged with the loss, giving up one hit, walking two, hitting a batter, allowing two runs and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.
Gregg has looked shaky so far this season and it won't be long before Cubs fans start screaming for Carlos Marmol. Another outing like this could cost Gregg his job.
Kevin Gregg battled through a shaky ninth inning to earn his first save as a Cub in their 4-2 win over Houston on Monday. He allowed two hits and a run scored while picking up the final three outs.
With Carlos Marmol waiting in the wings, Gregg cannot afford to blow many save opportunities in order to maintain his current role. For the time being, he'll remain the closer.
ESPN.com reports that the decision to name Kevin Gregg the closer for the Cubs is not one that is set in stone. "I think it's the right way to start the season and take some pressure off Marmol," Lou Piniella said Sunday. "We'll see how it evolves."
Gregg managed 29 saves with the Marlins last season, but a bum knee sent his season on a steady downward slide. He blew three saves following that injury and was no longer the everyday closer. He has looked very good this spring, and at worst he figures to be the Cubs setup man.
Kevin Gregg has been named the Cubs' closer, according to the Chicago Tribune. He beat out Carlos Marmol for the job.
Gregg has fared better than Marmol in the spring. Gregg fired 58 strikeouts over 68.2 innings in 2008 with a 1.28 WHIP, and he is worth scooping up in mixed leagues following this news.
MLB.com reports that Kevin Gregg made it known on Saturday that he wants to close for the Cubs this season. "I want it," Gregg said. "I want to close. I have no qualms about saying that." He struck out one batter, while allowing no hits, runs, or walks in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Angels.
The veteran is battling for the job with Carlos Marmol. A knee injury caused Gregg to falter late last season, but he is healthy now and he has a legitimate chance of winning the job. He possesses a wide assortment of pitches, and should he win the gig, his fantasy value would spike.
Kevin Gregg pitched well on Thursday for the Cubs, striking out two while walking just one batter in a scoreless inning.
Gregg hasn't allowed an earned run this spring and is certainly giving Carlos Marmol a run for his money early on for the closer job.
The Cubs have avoided arbitration with Kevin Gregg by signing the reliever to a deal, according to the Sports Network. He will earn $4.2 million for 2009.
Gregg held a 3.41 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 68.2 innings with the Marlins last season, but nailed down 29 saves while holding batters to a .203 average. He should be given a chance to compete with Carlos Marmol for the closer's role in Chicago.
