Newsbreakers

October 19, 2009

San Diego Padres' beat writer Corey Brock believes that starting pitcher Kevin Correia will be back with the team next season. Brock believes that the Padres will offer Correia arbitraton after he reached several career highs this season.

Our View:

Correia had a nice season for the Pads in 2009, going 12-11 with a 3.91 ERA. Expect him to be back with the team next season, and he should be good for another solid, if unspectacular, campaign in 2010.

October 3, 2009

Kevin Correia gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Giants at Petco Park. He had one walk with four strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View:

Correia fell off track after allowing two or less earned runs in each of his previous three starts. He is 12-11 with a 3.91 ERA for the season.

September 25, 2009

Kevin Correia only surrendered six hits over nine scoreless innings in Friday's 4-0 win at Arizona. He had one walk and racked up seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Correia improved his record to 12-10, and recorded his first career complete game and shutout. He is hot, as he has not allowed a run over his last two starts (16 innings).

September 20, 2009

Kevin Correia tossed seven scoreless innings on Sunday, helping the Padres to a 4-0 blanking of the Pirates.

Our View:

The great effort improved him to 11-10 on the season. In 183 innings pitched in 2009, he is sporting a 4.08 ERA.

September 9, 2009

Kevin Correia allowed just three runs in six tough innings on Tuesday night, keeping the Padres in a game they would eventually win 4-3 in San Francisco.

Our View:

Correia has clawed to a 10-10 record in 29 starts this season, and after posting a 4.30 ERA in the process, has all but cemented a place in the Padres 2010 rotation.

September 2, 2009

Kevin Correia shut out the Nationals for 7.2 innings on Wednesday en route to his tenth win of the season. He allowed just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out five in the 7-0 win.

Our View:

Correia is now 10-10 on the season and has earned victories in his last two starts. He needed Wednesday's solid outing though as he allowed nine runs and 21 hits in his last 12.1 innings prior to today.

August 28, 2009

Kevin Correia wasn't very sharp on Friday night, allowing 12 baserunners in just 6.1 innings, but received eight runs of support en route to his ninth win of the season.

Our View:

Correia always allows a lot of baserunners, but with nine wins and a 4.50 ERA, remains a solid-own in NL-only leagues.

August 23, 2009

Kevin Correia got hammered by the Cardinals on Saturday as the Padres fell by a score on 7-0. Correia went 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on ten hits while walking two and striking out two.

Our View:

Correia had been pitching very well in the month of August, but he did not look good tonight. His 4.46 ERA is very pedestrian, but NL-only owners may want to give him a look when he has a better matchup.

August 18, 2009

Kevin Correia only issued three hits over six scoreless innings in Monday's 4-1 win over the Cubs at Petco Park. He had four walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Correia pitched well tonight other than the four free passes, but was handed a no-decision instead of a win as the game was tied at zero when he exited. He is 1-1 with a 2.22 ERA over four starts this month, and is worth a look in NL-only leagues for his next trip to the hill.

August 12, 2009

Kevin Correia improved to 8-9 with six innings of three run ball on Wednesday night, as the Padres won 6-5 in Milwaukee

Our View:

Correia keeps hanging around, and with a 1.34 WHIP and 4.51 ERA, isn't a bad bet down the stretch.

August 8, 2009

Kevin Correia allowed only two runs (zero earned) over six innings on Friday, but took a no-decision as the Padres won 6-2 on a walk-off Everth Cabrera grand slam in the ninth inning.

Our View:

Correia steadied his WHIP to 1.34, while his ERA dropped to an acceptable 4.51. He's prone to getting bombed, but tosses his fair share of quality starts, and is a good spot-starting option when facing weak offensive teams like the Mets.

August 2, 2009

Kevin Correia had a quality outing on Sunday, but took a hard luck loss. He allowed just three runs on two hits and three walks over 6.1 innings in the Padres' 6-1 loss to the Brewers.

Our View:

Correia has been good in five of his last seven stars, but in his other two outings he was blasted, allowing 14 runs in 8.1 innings. He's not a bad fantasy play in NL-only leagues if you can find a way to avoid the meltdown games.

July 28, 2009

Kevin Correia moved to 7-8 on the season with his win over the Reds Tuesday night. Correia went six innings and allowed two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five in the 3-2 win.

Our View:

Correia was coming off a horrendous start against the Phillies, and it is almost boom or bust for the Padres hurler these days. When he is on, he can be very good, but when he struggles, he can kill a fantasy rotation. He remains a very risky play going forward.

July 23, 2009

Kevin Correia was lit up for eight earned runs on nine hits over a mere 3.1 innings of work in Thursday's 9-4 loss at Philadelphia. He had three walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Correia had a nightmarish outing at launching pad Citizens Bank Park, after only allowing one earned run over six innings in his previous start against the Rockies at Petco Park. Correia looks to remain an unstable fantasy hurler.

July 21, 2009

Kevin Correia could draw interest from contending teams before the July 31 trading deadline, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Correia hasn't been spectacular in 2009, but has struck out a fair amount of batters while keeping his WHIP low. He could certainly bring the Padres a prospect or two, but his fantasy value would take a hit were he to be traded away from the pitcher friendly confines of Petco Park.

July 19, 2009

Kevin Correia pitched six innings of one-run ball on Saturday, but took a no-decision as the Padres beat the Rockies 3-1 at home.

Our View:

The start was vintage 2009 Correia, not overpowering but effective enough, and he is worth an own in every format except for smaller mixed leagues.

July 7, 2009

Kevin Correia pitched six mediocre innings on Tuesday, and took his seventh loss as the Pads fell 4-3 to the D-Backs.

Our View:

Correia is a fine back-end of the roatation pitcher for the Pads, but not a great fantasy option. He won't really hurt your team, but won't really help it either.

July 2, 2009

Kevin Correia was roughed up for six earned runs on eight hits over five innings in Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Astros at Petco Park. He issued three walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Correia falls to 5-6 for the season, and had his two-game winning streak snapped. He was pitching well prior to today's disastrous outing, as he allowed two or less earned runs in four of his previous five starts. He is worth employing in NL-only leagues for his next turn in the Padres' rotation.

June 27, 2009

Kevin Correia improved to 5-5 and looked great at Texas on Saturday, giving up three runs off five hits and one walk while striking out nine in seven innings.

Our View:

Correia has been excellent during a current five-game quality start streak and is far and away San Diego's best pitcher at the moment with Jake Peavy and Chris Young on the DL. There's no reason not to ride his hot streak and continue to start him until he gives you a reason not to.

June 21, 2009

Kevin Correia was in control from the bump in Sunday's 4-1 win over Oakland at Petco Park, as he only issued one earned run on two hits over 6.2 innings. He had one walk and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View:

Correia is pitching very well right now, as he allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last four starts, while earning a win three times over the span. He is worth employing in NL-only leagues for his next outing.

June 19, 2009

Kevin Correia is the only Padres starter from the team's opening day rotation still in the rotation, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:

The Pads injury decimated rotation is a big reason why they have faded from contention of late. Correia has given them a lift, going 3-5 with a 4.52 ERA, but is not a great fantasy pitcher and no more than a four or five starter in the big leagues.

June 16, 2009

Kevin Correia took a hard luck loss on Tuesday as the Padres got two-hit by Seattle's Felix Hernandez in a 5-0 loss. Correia allowed only two hits himself, while also striking out five in eight innings.

Our View:

Correia has now thrown three straight quality starts and appears to be settling in down in San Diego after six seasons in San Francisco. He still isn't much more than a fantasy spot starter, though.

June 11, 2009

Kevin Correia was exceptional on three days rest as the Padres defeated the Dodgers 3-1 on Wednesday. He allowed just three hits, no walks, and one run while winning his second straight start.

Our View:

Correia's start was moved up due to Chad Gaudin's appearance in an extra innings game against the Diamondbacks on Sunday. Correia responded with one of his best outings of the year.

June 10, 2009

Kevin Correia's next start has been moved up to Wednesday night as the righty will pitch for scheduled starter Chad Gaudin who is being pushed to Friday after throwing 37 pitches in relief on Sunday according to the North County Times. Correia will be pitching on three days of rest.

Our View:

Correia was solid against the Diamondbacks last Saturday, pitching six innings while striking out four and walking one. He still remains inconsistent start-to-start, however, and is no more than an acceptable spot starting option at this point, even if he's pitching in the pitcher friendly confines of Petco Park.

June 7, 2009

Kevin Correia picked up his second win of the season on Saturday as the Padres beat the Diamondbacks 6-4. Correia went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Correia was much better tonight than he was in his last start, and he was rewarded by his offense with six runs of support. Correia hasn't been great this season, and fantasy owners should stay away from him in all leagues.

June 2, 2009

Kevin Correia was rocked for four earned runs on 10 hits over 4.1 innings in Monday's 5-3 loss to the Phillies at Petco Park. He issued three walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

He falls to 1-4 for the season, and his ERA climbs to 5.37. He has surrendered 10 earned runs over his last two starts, and is not fit for fantasy duty.

May 26, 2009

Kevin Correia got ripped by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday as the Padres fell 6-5. Correia went 5.2 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out five.

Our View:

Correia hasn't been great this season, and he fell to 1-3 on the year with his loss tonight. He should not be owned in any league at this point, especially conisdering his 5.11 ERA.

May 6, 2009

Kevin Correia is in jeopardy of losing his spot in the Padres' rotation, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He is yet to win over five starts, and holds a poor 5.92 ERA and 1.77 WHIP.

Our View:

Correia would not hurt fantasy owners if he loses his spot as a starting pitcher. He could better serve the Padres as a reliever.

April 25, 2009

Kevin Correia allowed three runs on three hits and four walks in Friday's game against the Pirates. He did not factor in the decision.

Our View:

Correia needed 95 pitches to get through five-plus innings and struggled with his command on Friday. This has been a problem in his three starts this season as he has walked ten batters in just 16 innings.

March 20, 2009

Kevin Correia was shredded for four runs on eight hits in four and two-thirds innings Friday against the Cubs.

Our View:

It was an erratic day for Correia in his pursuit for a spot in the rotation. Though he struck out three batters, he also walked a trio of Cubs and gave up one long ball.

February 18, 2009

Kevin Correia indicated that he turned down better offers to sign a minor league deal with his hometown Padres, according to MLB.com. He said, "It was my dream growing up to play for my hometown team. This was a team I rooted for as a kid. A lot of my heroes were on that team. It has always been a team I've followed even while playing with the Giants."

Our View:

Correia is also hoping to earn a spot in the rotation out of spring training, but would only be worth a look in NL-only leagues.
