Newsbreakers

July 29, 2010

Blake Hawksworth allowed four runs off seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts over six innings against the Mets on Thursday.

Our View:

It wasn't a bad start for Hawksworth, but wasn't great, either. With Kyle Lohse potentially back in the next week or so, either Hawksworth or Jeff Suppan will be bumped from the rotation.

July 11, 2010

Blake Hawksworth gave up two runs on seven hits through 5.1 innings on Sunday in a winning effort over the Astros.

Our View:

Hawksworth has been solid in his past four starts, allowing as many as three runs only once during that stretch. His two Ks today were a low for that span, but his ERA is slowly dropping and now stands at 4.73.

July 1, 2010

Blake Hawksworth allowed three runs off six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over six innings against the Brewers on Thursday.

Our View:

He's pitched well in his past two starts, though we'd still like to see a lot more before considering him as an add.

June 28, 2010

According to Fox Sports Midwest's B.J. Rains, Blake Hawksworth looks primed to make another start on Thursday.

Our View:

He allowed just two hits and two runs (one earned) in five innings of work against the Royals last Saturday. That being said, he won't be worth a spot start in mixed leagues when he faces the Brewers this Thursday.

June 26, 2010

Making his second start of the season, Blake Hawksworth improved to 2-4 as the Cardinals defeated the Royals 5-3 on Saturday. He threw 66 pitches over five innings, allowing two hits, a walk, and two earned runs. He struck out one batter.

Our View:

With Brad Penny and Kyle Lohse on the DL, the Cardinals have had to put together a patchwork rotation. Hawksworth should continue to fill in given his success today. Normally a reliever, the Cardinals may slowly be stretching him out to become a fifth starter. However, until he does he won;t likely hold much fantasy value.

June 7, 2010

As expected, reliever Blake Hawksworth will make a spot-start against the Dodgers on Monday night, according to Fox Sports Midwest.

Our View:

The Cards decided to go with him over P.J. Walters, who faltered in his only start this season. In 21 innings out of the Cards bullpen, Hawksworth has posted a 5.14 ERA and 13 strikeouts.

June 7, 2010

Blake Hawksworth may be called upon to start against the Dodgers tonight, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

P.J. Walters was scheduled to start, but it sounds like manager Tony LaRussa may want to move him to the bullpen. Regardless of who starts, both should be avoided for fantasy purposes.

April 1, 2010

According to MLB.com, Blake Hawksworth tested his injured groin on Thursday with a 25-pitch bullpen session.

Our View:

Hawksworth has thrown just five innings so far this spring because of the injury, so it's nice to see him getting his work in. He fully expects to be ready for the start of the regular season and will return to the Cards' bullpen once again. He was a standout setup man in the second half last season, but likely will be ticketed for long relief this year.
