Newsbreakers

September 16, 2009

TheScore.com is reporting that the San Francisco Giants have activated pitcher Randy Johnson off the DL. Johnson is expected to join the Giants' bullpen for the rest of the season.

Our View:

Talk about adding some depth to the bullpen! The Big Unit probably won't pitch all that much, but he is an intimidating force coming in from the pen. His fantasy value is all but gone, but he should make the Giants even better on the mound.

September 14, 2009

Randy Johnson threw a simulated game Monday, according to the Associated Press. He was facing batters for the first time since landing on the DL with a torn rotator cuff more than two months ago, and threw 53 pitches.

Our View:

Johnson will next see how he feels Tuesday before determining when he may be able to return to the Giants. He would like to contribute as a reliever out of the pen for the remainder of the season.

September 12, 2009

Randy Johnson (shoulder) will throw live batting practice on Monday, and could be activated for the team's series against the Rockies that starts that day if all goes well, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

He will rejoin the team's pitching staff as a reliever. In 91.2 innings this season (17 starts), the future Hall-of-Famer has a 4.81 ERA.

August 31, 2009

FoxSports.com is reporting that Randy Johnson is hoping to pitch again for the Giants this season. Johnson hopes to throw off a mound by the end of the week, and he will try to return as a reliever for the team's playoff push.

Our View:

Having the Big Unit coming out of the pen would surely strengthen the right side for the Giants down the stretch. It is not a sure thing that he will be ready to go, but if he is able to throw off the mound this week it would be a good start.

July 29, 2009

The San Jose Mercury News reports that Randy Johnson has been moved to the 60-day disabled list, but may return in September. However, should he make it back to the Giants he would likely take on a relief role and pitch out of the bullpen.

Our View:

The good news is Johnson won't go under the knife (which would have likely ended his career) and placing him on the 60-day DL cleared a spot for new addition Ryan Garko. The Big Unit will rest for at least three weeks before playing catch and attempting to return. Looks like it's time to find a fantasy replacement if you have him on your roster.
