August 21, 2009

The Miami Herald reports that the A's have activated first baseman Daric Barton from the 15-day disabled list.

Our View:

Barton has recovered from a strained hamstring, but has hit just .147 with a homer and three RBI in 17 games with the A's this season. He replaces Bobby Crosby on the roster, who landed on the DL.

July 27, 2009

A's manager Bob Geren said that Daric Barton's strained right hamstring may end up landing him on the DL, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Barton has done little to merit the attention from any fantasy owners the past two seasons. Look for the A's to call up either Tommy Everidge or Travis Buck if Barton does indeed land on the DL.

July 27, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that A's first baseman Daric Barton is questionable for Monday's game against the Red Sox due to a strained hamstring. Barton sustained the injury in the fifth inning of Sunday's game while stretching for a ball at first base.

Our View:

The injury is believed to be minor, but the A's might keep him out on Monday for precautionary reasons. Barton is lucky he wasn't more severely injured on the play, as he dropped into the splits while stretching for a throw from Orlando Cabrera. He should return at some point this week, and we will keep you updated on his status.

July 20, 2009

The A's called Daric Barton up from Triple-A on Monday, according to the Oakland Tribune.

Our View:

The move was made as a result of Jason Giambi's placement on the DL. Barton has been unimpressive at both Triple-A and Oakland since the start of 2008 and there's no reason to give him a look at this point.

June 28, 2009

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Daric Barton has been optioned to Triple-A.

Our View:

Barton was moved to make room for Mark Ellis, and the club wants the young hitter to have a chance to play every day. He'll likely get another call later in the season.

June 9, 2009

A's first baseman Daric Barton is likely to return to Triple-A Sacramento when the A's activate Bobby Crosby off the bereavement list, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Barton was called up on Tuesday to replace the injured Ryan Sweeney.

Our View:

Barton, the A's starting first baseman last season, is only hitting .245 in Triple-A this season, and the team is more desperate for depth in the outfield than they are at first. Expect Barton to be sent back down either today or tomorrow, as Crosby is scheduled to return either today or tomorrow. If Barton does stick, don't expect him to hold any fantasy value as a backup.

June 8, 2009

Daric Barton has been recalled from Triple-A Sacramento by Oakland, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Outfielder Ryan Sweeney (knee sprain) was placed on the 15-day DL as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Barton was only hitting .245 in Triple-A, and is a career .243 hitter in the majors. He is only worth a look for deeper AL-only leagues while providing depth with Oakland.

March 29, 2009

Daric Barton is considered day-to-day with a return of the quad strain that hindered him earlier in March, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:

Barton has some pop in his bat, but not enough for a fantasy first baseman. He has been hitting well in spring training, but should be left for deeper AL-only leagues.

March 22, 2009

Daric Barton went 3-for-5 with his first home run of the spring as Oakland fell to the White Sox 12-10 on Sunday. He played the entire game at first base.

Our View:

We would like to see Barton get another shot at being an everyday player this season, but that may not be the case with Jason Giambi and Jack Cust in the mix. He is hitting .391 this spring.

March 10, 2009

Daric Barton noted that he hopes to play Friday, according to the SF Chronicle. He is nursing a strained quad.

Our View:

Barton should serve as the A's starting first baseman if healthy. He could hit for a decent average, but will leave a bit to be desired in the power department at the position.

March 6, 2009

Daric Barton will be out for 4-5 days while recovering from a strained quad, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:

Barton should serve as the A's starting first baseman if healthy. He could hit for a decent average, but will leave a bit to be desired in the power department at the position.

March 4, 2009

Daric Barton played first base and went 2-for-2 with a run scored in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the White Sox. He seems to be fully recovered from his October hip surgery.

Our View:

The 23-year-old will get another shot to be the everyday first baseman in Oakland. He was pretty awful last season, but his minor league history is spotless.

March 2, 2009

Daric Barton, who is recovering from October hip surgery, may be ready to work in the field as early as Tuesday, according to the SF Chronicle. He went 0-for-2 in his spring debut while serving in the DH role.

Our View:

Barton only hit .226 over 446 at-bats last season, and could be limited in 2009 while competing with Jason Giambi, Jack Cust and Travis Buck for playing time.

February 28, 2009

Daric Barton, who underwent hip surgery last October, was given an at-bat as a pinch hitter in Friday's exhibition game with Milwaukee, according to the SF Chronicle. He said, "It went fine. I got out of the box OK. I was a little hesitant, but it came out OK."

Our View:

Barton may have a hard time getting at-bats this season, while competing with Jason Giambi, Jack Cust and Travis Buck.

February 24, 2009

A's first baseman Daric Barton will miss the team's first four or five games in spring training due to his recovery from offseason hip surgery, according to the Oakland Tribune.

Our View:

Barton won't play until trainers clear him, and this hurts his chances to find at-bats. He'll have competition in the form of Jason Giambi, Jack Cust and Travis Buck. Barton hit a lowly .226 last season, showing little power, with nine home runs.

January 26, 2009

First baseman Daric Barton could face long odds to find at-bats in 2009. He had hip surgery in October and his tonsils removed in January, and Barton may be behind entering spring training. He then needs to fight Jason Giambi, Jack Cust, and Travis Buck for playing time. "He'll need to come in and have a nice spring and a good start to the season," manager Bob Geren tells Scout.com.

Our View:

Barton, 23, hit only .226 with nine homers in his first full season as a starter. He carried high scouting grades throughout his minor league career, and it seems a little too soon to give up on him. However, Barton seems unlikely to find regular at-bats given that Cust and Giambi are certain to be everyday players. Daric is still worth a look later in AL-only drafts, but that's about it.

January 13, 2009

Daric Barton is happy that the A's signed Jason Giambi, even though it likely means less playing time for him, according to MLB.com. "I think that's natural (thinking about his potential loss of playing time)," Barton conceded. "But I wasn't negative about anything. Did I think about my situation? Yeah. But at the same time, I can understand what [the A's are] doing. I mean, I look back at my year and I don't think bringing Jason in is a bad thing at all. As far as the team goes, in the lineup and in the clubhouse, it can't be anything but good for all of us."

Our View:

Given Barton's struggles thus far, you can hardly blame the A's for bringing Giambi back. Daric is still just 23, so he'll likely get another shot to be a regular at some point, but it's uncertain if he'll ever develop enough power to be useful in fantasy.
