Newsbreakers

September 22, 2009

The Arizona Republic is reporting that D-Backs' catcher Chris Snyder is scheduled to undergo surgery on his back on Wednesday. Snyder is expected to be fully recovered in time for spring training next season.

Our View:

Snyder should be ready to go for next season, but this surgery should significantly hurt his trade value in the offseason. The D-Backs would like to move him before next year, as they look committed to Miguel Montero as the future behind the plate.

Chris Snyder has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation

Our View:

Snyder has received limited playing time the past few months after Miguel Montero's offensive breakout, and no longer has fantasy value in any format.

August 27, 2009

According to MLB.com, Chris Snyder was scratched from Wednesday's game against the Padres due to tightness in his left glute.

Our View:

The injury doesn't sound serious, but Snyder is a poor fantasy play even when healthy. He's hitting just .200 with six homers and 22 RBI on the season and has just two hits in his last ten games.

July 29, 2009

According to the Arizona Republic, Chris Snyder will assume a backup role with the Diamondbacks now that he has been activated from the disabled list.

Our View:

Due to the red hot bat of third-year catcher Miguel Montero, Snyder lost his job while nursing a lower back strain since June 23. Manager A.J. Hinch says Montero will get the bulk of the playing time and Snyder may draw some trade interest now that he's expendable in Arizona. If the D-Backs can't deal him, he will serve as the team's backup.

July 28, 2009

According to the Twitter page of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the team has activated catcher Chris Snyder off the DL. In a corresponding move, the team optioned catcher Luke Carlin to Triple-A Reno.

Our View:

Snyder caught nine innings in his final rehab start last night, and he also managed to homer in his first at-bat. Don't expect Snyder to take over the starting gig from Miguel Montero, but he should get a start or two a week and see plenty of pinch-hitting duty.
