Newsbreakers

December 3, 2009

The Braves have officially signed relief pitcher Takashi Saito, according to Ed Price of AOL FanHouse.

Our View:

The deal is believed to be worth $3 million for one season. Along with Billy Wagner, he makes up a nice new back-end to the Braves bullpen, which is losing Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez this offseason.

December 3, 2009

Free agent reliever Takashi Saito is nearing a deal with the Atlanta Braves, according to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.

Our View:

It is expected to be a one-year deal for $3 million. The Red Sox had expressed interest in keeping the 39-year-old righty, who posted a 2.43 ERA in 55.2 innings for the team last season.

November 30, 2009

Free agent reliever Takashi Saito is reportedly drawing interest from at least eight clubs, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Saito, age 39, was a key cog in the Red Sox's bullpen in 2009, posting a 2.43 ERA in 55.2 innings over 56 appearances. The team declined a $6 million option on him for 2010, but is interested in retaining him at a lower price. Also rumored to be interested are the Cubs, White Sox, Mets and Braves, among others.

October 20, 2009

Takashi Saito has cleared waivers after being outrighted by the Red Sox on Monday, and is now an unrestricted free agent, capable of signing with any team, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

There is mutual interest between the two sides in a Red Sox reunion. The 39-year-old reliever posted a tidy 2.43 ERA in 55.2 innings for the team in 2009.

October 15, 2009

According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have outrighted reliever Takashi Saito.

Our View:

The Sox will now likely turn down Saito's 2010 option since he's no longer on the 40-man roster, and because he has at least three years of major league service time, he can become a free agent. He will draw interest from several teams as he showed he can still make hitters miss, fanning 52 in 55.2 innings this past season.

June 16, 2009

FoxSports.com is reporting that the Red Sox might be inclined to trade reliever Takashi Saito if the right deal presents itself. Saito has closed in the past, but he is serving as a set-up man in Boston for the time being.

Our View:

Saito could be a nice addition for any team looking for someone to close or for a set-up man, but the Red Sox seem less likely to trade him now that they are getting production from David Ortiz at the plate. If the Sox do move Saito, they would want a major league bat in return. Keep an eye on what the Red Sox do, because if Saito were to move to a team in need of a closer, his fantasy value would skyrocket.

January 10, 2009

The Red Sox have signed reliever Takashi Saito to a one-year deal with a 2010 club option, sources inform FOXSports.com. He is guaranteed between $1.5 and $2.5 million in 2009 and could make up to $7 million. Saito missed more than two months last season due to a sprained ligament in his elbow.

Our View:

The Red Sox continue to add injury-plagued players to high-incentive deals. If he is healthy, Saito could be an excellent reliever and setup man for Jonathan Papelbon. He could join Manny Delcarmen and Hideki Okajima in the seventh/eighth inning mix.

January 6, 2009

Takashi Saito reportedly received close to 10 offers last month from interested MLB clubs, according to the NPB Tracker.

Our View:

The Cardinals and Red Sox were among the interested teams. He was not tendered a contract by the Dodgers due to concerns regarding his elbow.

January 4, 2009

The Boston Globe reports that the Dodgers made an offer to free-agent Takashi Saito earlier this winter.

Our View:

Saito, who has 81 saves over the past three seasons, is coming off elbow problems and was not tendered a contract by the Dodgers.
