Newsbreakers

January 2, 2010

According to ESPN.com, the Rangers are interested in Rays catcher Dioner Navarro.

Our View:

Navarro signed a one-year deal worth $2.1 million earlier this offseason, but the Rangers are desperate for veteran help behind the plate. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is still recovering from shoulder surgery and likely won't be able to catch every day, and they aren't sure if youngster Taylor Teagarden is ready to take on a sizable chunk of innings. They may be trying to pry Navarro away from the Rays through trade, but have also looked at free agents Rod Barajas, Miguel Olivo and Yorvit Torrealba.

December 12, 2009

Dioner Navarro has signed a one-year, $2.1 million contract to stay with Tampa Bay.

Our View:

He will be fighting with Kelly Shoppach for playing time. After hitting .295 in the Rays' pennant-winning 2008 season, he batted just .218 in 2009.

December 4, 2009

Dioner Navarro could share the No. 1 role at catcher with newly acquired Kelly Shoppach in 2010, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:

Skipper Joel Maddon believes Navarro and Shopach would be a great combination at the position for Tampa Bay. There is a chance that the club may non-tender Navarro or try to trade him though.

October 3, 2009

Dioner Navarro hit a two-run homer in the second inning to get the Rays going in an eventual 5-3 win over the Yankees.

Our View:

Navarro has had a disappointing season, hitting just .218 with eight homers after batting .295 a year ago in the Rays AL Championship campaign.

August 9, 2009

Dioner Navarro went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer off Ryan Rowland-Smith in Sunday's 11-2 loss at Seattle.

Our View:

Navarro collected his seventh homer of the season, tying his total in 2008. He was in need of a solid performance, as he was hitless over his previous three games.
