Newsbreakers

September 30, 2009

Adam LaRoche drove in his 39th and 40h runs since August 1 on Wednesday night, but couldn't propel the Braves to an absolutely essential win, as Atlanta lost 5-4 at home to the Marlins.

Our View:

The free-agent-to-be has hit .347 in 53 games since being acquired by the Braves at the trade deadline, and there is a strong likelihood he will be back in Georgia in 2010.

September 23, 2009

Adam LaRoche stayed hot on Thursday, going 3-for-5 with two RBI in the Braves' 5-2 win over the Mets.

Our View:

LaRoche has been one of the most productive players in baseball since August 1, batting .355 with 12 home runs and 36 RBI.

September 21, 2009

After sitting out with a sore back on Sunday, first baseman Adam LaRoche will be back in the Braves lineup on Monday when they take on the Mets in New York, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman.

Our View:

LaRoche has been one of the hottest players in baseball in September, batting .344 with four home runs and 14 RBI.

September 20, 2009

Adam LaRoche is out the Braves lineup on Sunday as he deals with a sore back, according to Mark Bowman on MLB.com.

Our View:

No word on how serious it is, but he's likely day-to-day. Martin Prado will fill in for him at first base and will bat second.

September 19, 2009

Adam LaRoche was 2-for-2 with a walk and a pair of RBI in the Braves 6-4 win over the Phillies on Saturday.

Our View:

LaRoche, notoriously a huge second half hitter, is living up to his billing. Since coming to the Braves at the trade deadline he's hitting over .350 with 12 homers and 33 RBI.

September 15, 2009

Adam LaRoche had a monster day at the plate on Tuesday. The Braves third baseman went 4-for-4 with a homer, two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored in a 6-0 win over the Mets.

Our View:

LaRoche has been killing the ball since coming back to the Braves and has 11 homers and 30 RBI in just 40 games with his "new" club.

September 13, 2009

Adam LaRoche went 2-for-5 with a double, a homer, two runs scored, and three RBI in the Braves' 9-2 win over the Cardinals on Sunday.

Our View:

LaRoche has been outstanding since coming back to Atlanta this season, and he capped a vry good weekend against the Cards with his performance today. He is worth a look if you need first base help, as he looks comfortable back home.

August 30, 2009

Adam LaRoche was forced to leave the Braves game early on Saturday with a sore right hip, according to MLBlogs.com.

Our View:

LaRoche doesn't expect to miss much time with the injury, however, and may even be in the Braves lineup tomorrow.

August 17, 2009

Adam LaRoche led the Braves offensively in Monday's 9-4 win over Arizona at Turner Field, as he went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a two-run homer off Max Scherzer.

Our View:

LaRoche recorded his fourth homer of August, and his 17th of the season. He is on pace to reach at least 20 homers for the fifth straight season.

August 12, 2009

Newest Brave (for the second time) Adam LaRoche led the charge against the Nationals on Wednesday night. The Chop's first baseman went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI, as Atlanta won 6-2 at home.

Our View:

With 16 home runs and 50 RBI, LaRoche is a great fill-in option in at first or utility in mixed formats, and, obviously, a must own in NL-only leagues during his second tour of duty with Atlanta.

August 11, 2009

Adam LaRoche is not in the Braves' lineup for their Tuesday night game against the Nationals. Martin Prado will start at first in his place.

Our View:

Just a night off against a lefty for LaRoche tonight, so get him out if you have another option. LaRoche has played pretty well since coming back to Atlanta, and he looks comfortable there.

August 3, 2009

Adam LaRoche went 1-for-2 with a solo homer off Mat Latos in tonight's 4-2 loss at San Diego.

Our View:

LaRoche hit his 14th homer of the season, and his first as a member of the Braves. He also has a hit in all three games played with Atlanta, and is fitting in well.

August 1, 2009

Adam LaRoche is in the lineup and batting fifth for the Braves on Saturday.

Our View:

FYI for fantasy owners in daily transaction leagues. LaRoche might move down to the sixth spot in games where Brian McCann is playing. The stud catcher is getting a day off on Saturday.

July 31, 2009

According to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports, the Red Sox have indeed flipped Adam LaRoche to the Braves for Casey Kotchman in a swap of first basemen.

Our View:

This is good news for LaRoche owners as he looks to have a full time job at first once again. Quite the opposite for Kotchman owners though. He is now likely third on the Red Sox depth chart at first base behind Kevin Youkilis and Victor Martinez.

July 31, 2009

According to Yahoo! Sports' Gordon Edes, the Braves have acquired expendable first baseman Adam LaRoche from the Red Sox.

Our View:

Rumor has it that the deal is a straight swap of LaRoche for Casey Kotchman. Why the Sox would trade one expendable first baseman (with no spot to play him) for another is puzzling.

July 31, 2009

According to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, the Red Sox may need to flip Adam LaRoche if the pending deal for Victor Martinez is completed.

Our View:

The Sox would have a messy platoon situation between Martinez, LaRoche, Kevin Youkilis, Mike Lowell, Jason Varitek and even David Ortiz if the deal goes through. Flipping LaRoche would help, but it may be tough to find takers. The Marlins have already stated they aren't interested.

July 28, 2009

Adam LaRoche is not in the Red Sox lineup on Tuesday, as Mike Lowell will return to play third. Kevin Youkilis will move from third to first, putting LaRoche on the bench.

Our View:

The Sox have an interesting platoon going between these three guys, and Lowell figures to be the one to see more time on the bench than the others. Expect LaRoche to be in the lineup on a mostly regular basis, but if you have him get him out tonight.

July 25, 2009

Adam LaRoche homered in his debut at first base for the Red Sox on Saturday. The homer was a two-run shot and he finished the day 1-for-4.

Our View:

Looks like LaRoche is adjusting to his new digs pretty quickly. He's a big-time second half performer and could be worth starting in mixed leagues as long as you monitor closely what days he starts.

July 25, 2009

According to the Boston Globe, newly acquired bat Adam LaRoche will make his Red Sox debut at first base on Saturday.

Our View:

Kevin Youkilis gets the day off as LaRoche will hit seventh and play first against the Orioles. Fantasy owners are hoping he takes advantage of the Green Monster.

July 24, 2009

Adam LaRoche has been activated by the Red Sox, according to the Associated Press. He was acquired via trade from Pittsburgh Wednesday.

Our View:

LaRoche will see action at first base, with Kevin Youkilis spelling Mike Lowell at third. LaRoche is an option for AL-only leagues, namely with a strong supporting cast in Boston.

July 22, 2009

According to WEEI.com, multiple sources have the Pirates sending Adam LaRoche to the Boston Red Sox for Double-A shortstop Argenis Diaz and Single-A pitcher Hunter Strickland once the deal is finalized.

Our View:

LaRoche will see some time at first base, with Kevin Youkilis playing third due to Boston's concern over Mike Lowell's health. He likely won't play every day, but should see a decent number of at-bats as the Sox need some left-handed pop to help curb their struggles against right-handed pitching this season. LaRoche is hitting just .247 with 12 homers and 40 RBI to this point, but is notorious second half performer.

July 22, 2009

According to Ed Price of MLB Fanhouse's Twitter account, the Pirates have traded first baseman Adam LaRoche.

Our View:

No details or destination yet, but the Pirates' clubhouse is apparently buzzing about it. No lineup has been posted for today's game, but it seems like LaRoche will not be in it. Stay tuned as we try and figure out where he's headed and who the Buccos are getting in return.

July 20, 2009

Adam LaRoche went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in tonight's 8-5 win over the Brewers at PNC Park. He hit a single and a double.

Our View:

LaRoche was in need of a solid outing, as he only had one hit over his previous six games (23 at-bats). He is only hitting .129 so far this month, after batting .344 in June.

July 10, 2009

Like they are with Freddy Sanchez, the Pirates are "pushing hard" to trade Adam LaRoche, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:

This is not surprising in the slightest, but there is apparently little interest in the free agent to be and the 2009 money remaining on his $7 million deal. He is hitting just .259 in 2009, but does have 12 home runs. If he is dealt, it will likely be closer to the deadline when teams are more desperate.

July 6, 2009

The San Francisco Giants have had discussions regarding Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:

LaRoche's contract is up after this season is over, so the Giants interest is not all that surprising. They are said to prefer a right-handed bat at first base, though, making the lefty hitting LaRoche unideal. He also has nearly $3.5 remaining on his 2009 salary as well, making him tougher to trade than some other Pirates players.

July 2, 2009

Adam LaRoche was productive in Thursday's 9-8 loss to the Mets at PNC Park, as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. He hit a single and a two-run homer off closer Francisco Rodriguez.

Our View:

LaRoche ended a seven-game skid without a homer, and leads the Pirates with 12 for the season. He snapped a four-game drought without an RBI as well.

June 24, 2009

Adam LaRoche went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 10-6 win over the Indians at PNC Park.

Our View:

He has homered in back-to-back games, and hit four so far in June. He is batting .357 (25-for-70) this month as well.

June 23, 2009

Adam LaRoche started a four-run ninth inning rally on Tuesday night, hitting a two-run home run off of Indians reliever Matt Herges, but the Bucs fell just short as the Tribe held on for a 5-4 win.

Our View:

LaRoche has been underwhelming in 2009, hitting just ten home runs while batting .259, but is still great trade bait for the perpetually rebuilding Pirates and likely will not be in a Pittsburgh uniform after the trade deadline has come and gone.

June 22, 2009

Adam LaRoche is not about to traded, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:

There had been some speculation LaRoche was on the way out after the team recently promoted Steve Pearce, but general manager Neal Huntington says there is nothing to the rumors. Sadly, usually when there is smoke, there is fire with the Pirates and would it not be at all surprising if LaRoche is moved sometime before next month's trading deadline to serve as a contending team's backup or fill-in first baseman.

June 17, 2009

Adam LaRoche was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored in Wednesday's 8-2 win over the Twins. He has raised his average 20 points in the last four games.

Our View:

LaRoche looks to be heating up again, and he has shown in the past that he can put together some very productive streaks. He is 8-for-15 in his last four games with two home runs and two doubles.

June 10, 2009

Adam LaRoche was 1-for-3 with two walks and two RBI as the Pirates defeated the Braves 3-2 on Wednesday.

Our View:

After hitting only .200 in May, LaRoche is up to .313 through 32 June at bats. He has also drawn nine walks against only six strikeouts, indicating that he is becoming more disciplined at the plate. There's a good chance he is on your waiver wire, and if you're looking for a corner infielder, you could certainly do worse than LaRoche.

May 21, 2009

Adam LaRoche was 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and two RBI in the Pirates' 5-4 loss to the Nationals on Thursday.

Our View:

LaRoche now has seven homers this season, but is hitting just .232 on the year. LaRoche is a notorious slow starter and does most of his damage after the All Star break. The seven homers so far aren't bad, but the average needs to greatly improve to warrant fantasy consideration beyond deep NL-only leagues.

May 13, 2009

According to USA Today, Adam LaRoche became the first player to have a home run taken away by instant replay on Wednesday.

Our View:

LaRoche blasted a shot in the first inning that appeared to hit a railing above the 21-foot wall in right field. It was called home run, but after review was reversed almost immediately. The umps made the right call and LaRoche was awarded a double.

April 26, 2009

Adam LaRoche blasted two home runs on Sunday in the Pirates' 8-3 win over the Padres. He was 2-for-3 with four RBI, a pair of walks and three runs scored.

Our View:

LaRoche has been a notorious slow starter throughout his career, but is breaking his chains this season. He now has five homers and 14 RBI to go along with a .288 average. Like the rest of the Pirates, he continues to surprise.

April 22, 2009

Adam LaRoche went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 7-4 win over Florida at PNC Park. He collected three doubles and a single.

Our View:

He raised his season batting average to .304, with seven doubles and 10 RBI over 14 games. He has struck out 15 times, but is having a solid season overall so far.

April 13, 2009

Although he has struggled so far in 2009, Adam LaRoche had a nice game at the plate Monday against the Astros, going 3-for-4 with a double, home run, and two RBI.

Our View:

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as LaRoche will show good power at times. Still, he is more likely to have less of these games than more of them.

April 9, 2009

Adam LaRoche is being held out of today's lineup against the Cardinals due to a stomach virus, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View:

Eric Hinske will cover first for today, and skipper John Russell is hoping LaRoche's virus will only last for a couple of days.

April 3, 2009

Adam LaRoche went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in Friday's 4-4 tie against Minnesota. That marks his third homer of the spring.

Our View:

LaRoche has potential to be a solid fantasy first baseman, but he needs to stay consistent over the course of the season, and not just heat up down the stretch, as he did in 2008.

March 7, 2009

Adam LaRoche went 2-for-4 with his first home run of the spring in the Pirates 10-1 win over Minnesota.

Our View:

The two hits improved his spring average to .211. Could this be the season that the elder LaRoche shows up before the all-star break? We wouldn't bank on it, but there's a lot to love about his .297/.360/.548 second half.

February 28, 2009

Adam LaRoche struggled on Saturday, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against the Astros.

Our View:

LaRoche is the most likely candidate to be Pittsburgh's starting first baseman, after hitting 25 homers with 85 RBI and a .270 average in 2008. Everyone has days like he had on Saturday, especially early in spring training.

February 13, 2009

Catcher Ryan Doumit endorses Adam LaRoche to have have a good 2009 campaign, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Doumit said, "Adam LaRoche is the man. And this is the year."

Our View:

LaRoche has been working through the off-season with hitting coach Don Long, and will be looking to change his track record of getting off to a slow start. LaRoche should be drafted as a reserve and employed in lineups when he hits his stride.

January 20, 2009

The Pirates have avoided salary arbitration with Adam LaRoche by signing him to a one-year deal for $7.05 million, according to ESPN.

Our View:

He will be the Pirates' second-highest paid player behind Jack Wilson, who will earn $7.25MM in 2009. LaRoche earned the deal by leading the Pirates in home runs (25) and RBI (85) in 2008.
