Angel Guzman has opted to undergo surgery to repair the torn ligament in his right shoulder, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat.
As expected, Guzman will miss the 2010 season, and John Grabow could serve as the Cubs' setup man in Guzman's absence. No word yet on exactly when Guzman's surgery will take place.
Angel Guzman has been diagnosed with a significant ligament tear in his right shoulder that could threaten his career, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Guzman may end up opting for surgery, which would put a premature end to his 2010 season and make for a difficult rehab period to even come back by 2011. He could also decide against surgery, in which case it would take from four to six weeks before knowing whether he could even try and pitch. With Guzman likely out of their 2010 plans, the Cubs could turn to John Grabow as their eight-inning man to set up Carlos Marmol.
Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune tweeted that Angel Guzman may be "cooked" for 2010 due to his shoulder issue.
Skipper Lou Piniella also noted that Guzman seems to be jinxed. He would be missed in Chicago's bullpen, but his fantasy value is limited.
In a serious blow to the Cubs bullpen, Angel Guzman is slated to undergo an MRI on his right shoulder on Friday and the team is "not optimistic," according to beat writer Carrie Muskat.
He has been dealing with right shoulder discomfort that has not been getting better. Shoulder injuries and pitchers together almost never equal anything but awful news. Stay tuned.
Angel Guzman fired 30 pitches from 60 feet Monday, according to MLBblogs.com.
Guzman is improving in his recovery from right shoulder discomfort, but won't throw from a mound until next week. He will compete for a setup role if healthy, and could hold value in leagues that award points for holds.
According to Carrie Muskat on Twitter, Angel Guzman threw 25-30 pitches from 45 feet on Sunday and his injured shoulder fared well.
Guzman is set to throw again on Monday, but it appears his shoulder's return to full health is imminent. Assuming he's ready to start the season, he will likely handle setup duties in front of Carlos Marmol.
According to Carrie Muskat on Twitter, Angel Guzman is slated to test his injured right shoulder on Sunday.
Guzman was shut down a couple days ago due to shoulder discomfort, and is already dealing with rehab from arthroscopic knee surgery, so expect the Cubs to treat him with kid gloves. Assuming he's healthy, he's slated to handle the eighth inning and set up for Carlos Marmol.
Angel Guzman will be temporarily shut down due to shoulder discomfort, according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer.
The Cubs do not believe the ailment is serious, and for now Guzman is not scheduled to see a doctor, as rest could well be all that's needed. He should be fine by the start of the season and ready to set up Carlos Marmol.
Angel Guzman underwent arthroscopic knee surgery two weeks ago to repair a torn meniscus, according to the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan.
The surgery wasn't too major, and Guzman is still aiming to be ready by Opening Day. If he can get back to good health, he'll have a chance to set up closer Carlos Marmol as the Cubs' eight-inning man.
The Cubs and Angel Guzman have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $825,000 deal, according to the Chicago Daily Herald.
Guzman had easily the best season of his career last year, posting a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 61 innings in middle relief. You should be seeing plenty of him in the seventh and maybe even eighth innings in 2010.
