Newsbreakers

November 11, 2009

Sportsnet.ca is reporting that, despite rumors of the Phillies including Cole Hamels in trade talks for Roy Halladay, Hamels will not be traded. Hamels was likely mentioned as a possibility after his controversial comments during the World Series.

Our View:

Hamels would certainly seal the deal in a Halladay trade, but the Phils aren't moving their young lefty. How quickly people forget his 2008 World Series MVP. Expect him to be in a Phillies' uniform for many years to come.

November 3, 2009

Yahoo! Sports reports that Phillies pitchers Cole Hamels and Brett Myers had a "short but terse confrontation" in the Phils clubhouse after their victory in game five of the World Series.

Our View:

Myers reportedly said to Hamels, "What are you doing here? I thought you quit." The snide remark was in reference to comments Hamels made after he was lit up in game three of the World Series about wanting the season to be over because of how poorly his year had gone. It doesn't look to be an issue going into game six.

November 1, 2009

Given an early three-run lead, Cole Hamels was ineffective yet again for the Phillies in the playoffs, allowing five runs in just 4.1 innings, as the Yankees won game three of the World Series 8-5 in Philadelphia.

Our View:

Hamels now has allowed at least three runs in all four of his playoff starts, and failed to make it past 5.1 innings. With his next start coming in a potential game six, he has to figure something out or risk giving away the Phils' season.

October 27, 2009

Cole Hamels will not start until game three of the World Series, according to Michael Klein of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:

The move allows Hamels to pitch at home, where he was dramatically better than he was on the road this season. His ERA sat at 4.99 away from Citizens Bank Park, but 3.76 at it. Pedro Martinez will start game two in Yankee Stadium.

October 24, 2009

The Sporting News is reporting that the Phillies have not decided on their World Series rotation past Game 1 starter Cliff Lee. Cole Hamels, Pedro Martinez, JA Happ, and Joe Blanton are the starting options for the team.

Our View:

Hamels is the obvious choice for Game 2, but he has been just short of awful in the postseason. Still, we expect him to get the nod, with Pedro going in Game 3 and either Happ or Blanton in Game 4.

October 21, 2009

Cole Hamels was unimpressive in his Game 5 start on Wednesday, but his offense wasn't as the Phillies clinched their second consecutve NL pennant with a 10-4 win over the Dodgers. Hamels lasted only 4.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three.

Our View:

Hamels NLCS struggles continued tonight, but his offense bailed him out yet again. Phillies' fans should be concerned about Hamels for the World Series, as he will have to be much better if they expect to repeat as champs.

October 18, 2009

According to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, Cole Hamels will "probably" start game five of the NLCS for the Phillies.

Our View:

Hamels was a dud in game one, allowing four runs in 5.1 innings. He was a postseason warrior in 2008, though, so maybe he will get on track in game five.

October 15, 2009

Cole Hamels got the win in game one of the NLCS on Thursday despite some shaky pitching. The Philly lefty allowed four runs in 5.1 innings, but Philadelphia held on for an 8-6 win.

Our View:

Hamels just isn't the same pitcher that he was in 2008. His effort was enough for the win tonight, but he can't count on many more playoff wins with this kind of effort.

October 13, 2009

Cole Hamels is set t0 start Game 1 of the NLCS, according o MLB.com. Hamels was a playoff hero last year for the returning champion Phillies.

Our View:

Hamels struggled a buch this season, but he is a big-time gamer who seems to step up when it counts the most. Expecct him to come out dealing against the Dodgers, but his offence will have to be solid as well

October 8, 2009

Cole Hamels performed in his first playoff start this year much like he did in the regular season. He was tagged for four runs over just five innings as the Phillies dropped Game 2 of the NLDS to the Rockies 5-4.

Our View:

Hamels just can't seem to figure it out this season. Last year's World Series MVP was roughed up for the four runs and allowed seven hits in just five innings of work. He fanned five and didn't walk a man, but his struggles put the Phillies in a 4-0 hole that they couldn't dig out of.

October 3, 2009

Cole Hamels was unimpressive once again on Saturday. Last year's World Series MVP allowed three runs on three hits and a pair of walks over just three innings in a 4-3 loss to the Marlins.

Our View:

Hamels fell to 10-11 on the season after the loss and his ERA now sits at 4.32. Not the type of year fantasy owners were expecting after spending a high pick on him before the season started.

September 28, 2009

Cole Hamels was lit up for six earned runs on nine hits over 6.2 innings in Monday's 8-2 loss to the Astros at Citizens Bank Park. He issued three walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

Hamels is now 10-10 with a 4.25 ERA for 2009. He allowed one or less earned runs in three of his six starts this month.

September 23, 2009

Cole Hamels allowed four runs in seven innings on Wednesday, but again had his sub-par night out-shined by yet another Brad Lidge blown save in the Phils' 6-5 loss in Miami.

Our View:

Hamels is still a solid 3-2 with a 2.45 ERA in five starts this month, and clicking at the right time for the Phils.

September 17, 2009

Cole Hamels struck out ten Nationals in eight-innings of one-run ball on Thursday, as the Phillies brushed aside Washington 4-2 at home.

Our View:

Hamels' latest brilliant start now leaves the ace lefty with a 3-1 record and 1.43 ERA in his past five starts. He has struck out 38 batters in that span.

September 11, 2009

Cole Hamels only allowed one earned run on seven hits over 6.2 innings in Friday's 4-2 win over the Mets at Citizens Bank Park. He had one walk with six strikeouts.

Our View:

Hamels had a nice outing, and evened his record to 9-9. He bounced back well from his last outing, when he gave up four earned runs over six innings at Houston.

September 6, 2009

One start after two-hitting the Giants, Cole Hamels allowed four runs in six innings on Sunday, as the Phillies lost 4-3 in Houston.

Our View:

So apparently that two-hitter wasn't a sign of Hamels finally turning the corner - it was just a sign of him pitching against the Giants.

September 1, 2009

Cole Hamels finally looked like his old dominant self on Tuesday. He went the distance against the Giants, tossing a nearly flawless two-hit, one-walk shutout. Nine Giants went down on strikes and he earned his eighth win of the season with a 1-0 victory.

Our View:

The shutout was his second of the season, but the outing was easily his most dominant. He looks to be figuring it out just in time for the Phillies too. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 17 innings.

August 26, 2009

Cole Hamels picked up only his fourth quality start since the All-Star break, and allowed no runs in a start for the first time since June 4. as the Phillies won 4-1 in ten innings in Pittsburgh.

Our View:

The Phillies can only hope tonight was a sign of things to come for Hamels down the stretch. He should be good to go for September and the playoffs, as he has thrown just 147.1 innings this season.

August 21, 2009

Cole Hamels had another unimpressive start on Friday. He allowed four runs on ten hits over five innings and fell to 7-8 on the season after a 4-2 loss to the Mets.

Our View:

On the bright side, Hamels fanned six and did not walk a batter, but against a highly depleted Mets lineup he should have fared much better than this.

August 15, 2009

Cole Hamels allowed two earned runs on three hits over six innings in Saturday's 4-3 loss at Atlanta. He had four walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied at 2-2 when Hamels exited, so he takes a no-decision rather than a loss. He is winless over his last three starts, and continues to have a frustrating season for fantasy owners.

August 8, 2009

Mark down another disappointing start for Cole Hamels. The Phillies' ace allowed four runs on five hits and four walks over just 5.1 innings and took the loss as the Marlins won out 6-4.

Our View:

The World Series MVP has been disastrous this season and has a pedestrian 7-7 record to go along with his troubling 4.77 ERA. In two August starts he has allowed 11 runs in 10.1 innings.

August 2, 2009

Cole Hamels' disappointing season continued on Sunday. He was tagged for seven runs, ten hits and two walks in just five innings against the light-hitting Giants. He absorbed the loss in the 7-3 defeat and is now just 7-6 on the season.

Our View:

As soon as you think Hamels is putting the pieces of his shattered season back together he has another "setback." He allowed just one run in eight innings his last time out, and then laid an egg on Sunday. His potential is too high to drop him, but he's been disappointing to say the least.

July 28, 2009

Cole Hamels won the battle of the aces on Tuesday as he defeated Dan Haren and the Diamondbacks 4-3. Hamels went eight innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out nine.

Our View:

This is the kind of start that is expected by Hamels, and he has been producing them more consistently as of late. As long as he stays hot, he is one of the elite pitchers in the NL, and with the offense that he has behind him Hamels should be a lock to continue to deliver wins.

July 23, 2009

Cole Hamels gave up three earned runs on four hits over seven innings in Thursday's 9-4 win over the Padres at Citizens Bank Park. He had two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:

It was not a strong outing by Hamels' standards, but the Phillies provided enough offensive firepower for him to collect his sixth win of the season. He has not taken a loss over his last four starts.

July 22, 2009

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Cole Hamels will start Thursday's makeup game against the Padres.

Our View:

Hamels' last outing was interrupted by rain while pitching in Miami on Friday. He has been inconsistent this season, but looked good his last time out before being cut short. The Phillies and fantasy owners hope he can rebound and have the second half that everyone knows he is capable of.

July 11, 2009

Cole Hamels was tagged for five earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Saturday's 8-7 win over the Pirates at Citizens Bank Park. He had no walks and six strikeouts, and gave up three homers.

Our View:

Pittsburgh was leading 5-3 when Hamels exited, so he ends the night with a no-decision. He remains at 5-5, and is yet to win in back-to-back starts this season.

July 6, 2009

Cole Hamels was great against the Reds on Monday, allowing just one run off three hits and zero walks with two strikeouts to get his record back to .500 at 5-5.

Our View:

Hamels also helped himself out at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, not that he needed to after he was given 10 runs of support in the first inning alone. Hamels had been shaky in his previous few starts but certainly has the potential to be a key contributor to your pitching staff the rest of the season.

July 1, 2009

Phillies ace Cole Hamels was roughed up for the second straight start on Wednesday night, lasting just four innings and giving up seven earned runs as the Phillies got pounded 11-1 by Atlanta.

Our View:

Hamels' ERA is now nearly five, at 4.98 through 85 innings this season. He has yet to have his ERA below four in 2009, and has gone longer than six innings just three times in 15 starts. Despite all the struggles, now might be a good time to buy low on the Philadelphia ace.

June 26, 2009

Cole Hamels had a tough outing in Friday's 6-1 loss at Toronto, as he was tagged for four earned runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings. He had two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

Hamels was ejected after arguing balls and strikes with plate umpire Mark Carlson. He is now winless over his last four starts.

June 25, 2009

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the Phillies plan to flip-flop Cole Hamels and J.A. Happ in the rotation for this weekend. Hamels will throw Friday and Happ will throw Saturday, thus allowing Hamels to start an extra game before the All-Star break.

Our View:

The Phillies will also avoid an eight-day layoff for Hamels by making this move, so it seems like a good idea. Fantasy owners should be prepared to start Hamels on Friday, so don't forget to get him in there since he wasn't supposed to go until Saturday.

June 21, 2009

Cole Hamels allowed two earned runs on nine hits over eight innings in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Orioles at Citizens Bank Park. He issued no walks and fired 10 strikeouts.

Our View:

It was a solid outing for the Phillies' ace, but he was unfortunately dealt a loss due to poor run support from his teammates. Hamels has now gone three straight starts without a win.

June 16, 2009

Phillies ace Cole Hamels took a no-decision on Tuesday night, going six innings and surrendering two earned runs in the Phils 8-3 loss to Toronto.

Our View:

Hamels has been mortal this season, but hasn't lost since April 23 because of the Phillies incredible offense. He is still a top tier fantasy option.

June 10, 2009

Cole Hamels allowed 11 hits and two walks, but only gave up four earned runs over five innings as the Phillies defeated the Mets 5-4 on Wednesday. He did not factor into the decision and only had one strikeout on the night.

Our View:

Opponents are hitting .300 off of Hamels this season. He was coming off of his best game of the season, a complete game shutout against the Dodgers. Unfortunately, he has sandwiched that outing with two awful showings. Despite the high BAA, he has not lost since April 23.

June 4, 2009

Cole Hamels hurled a complete game shutout in Thursday's 3-0 win at Los Angeles. He only gave up five hits, and fired five strikeouts and no walks.

Our View:

Hamels played up to his billing as the ace of the Phillies' rotation tonight. He has won two straight starts, and has not taken a loss in his last seven outings.

May 30, 2009

Cole Hamels was rocked for six earned runs on eight hits over six innings in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. He issued one walk with seven strikeouts.

Our View:

It was not a solid outing for Hamels, but the Phillies provided plenty of offensive firepower for him to notch his third win of the season. He was not beaten in May as he ends the month with a 3-0 mark over five starts.

May 24, 2009

Cole Hamels scattered eight hits over six innings and allowed just two runs, but ended up without a decision in Sunday's 4-3 11-inning win over the Yankees. He did not walk a man and struck out five.

Our View:

After a rough start to the season and multiple injuries, Hamels is finally starting to put it all together. He hasn't been dominant yet, but he now has four quality starts in a row and has looked like a different pitcher this month. We see the light. Now he just needs to get to the end of the tunnel.

May 19, 2009

Cole Hamels had a quality start on Tuesday and picked up his second win of the season with six innings of work where he allowed three runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out seven as the Phillies topped the Reds 4-3.

Our View:

Hamels is steadily getting better. He wasn't dominant on Tuesday, but he didn't move backwards either. He's now put up three quality starts in a row and looks like he may be returning to his championship form of a year ago.

May 14, 2009

Cole Hamels continued getting back on track on Thursday, but his team couldn't pull out the win against the Dodgers. Hamels went seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out nine.

Our View:

Hamels has produced two very good starts in a row, and he looks to be back to the Hamels of old. Fantasy owners were seen doing back flips during this game today, and it appears all concerns about Cole are gone.

May 8, 2009

Cole Hamels finally won his first game of the season. He held the Braves to just two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings and stuck out seven in the Phillies' 10-6 blowout win.

Our View:

Tonight's start invoked a collective sigh of relief from fantasy owners. Hamels has been banged up all year and hasn't looked like himself while he's been on the mound. This start suggests he's truly healthy and domination could be on the way.

May 8, 2009

Cole Hamels will wear a wrap around his ailing left ankle for his upcoming starts, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:

His next start is tonight at home against the Braves, and Phillies' skipper Charlie Manuel believes the ace hurler is fine. He is 6-3 with a 3.45 ERA over 11 career starts against Atlanta, and should be employed in fantasy lineups.

May 5, 2009

Updating a previous report, Cole Hamels is good to go for his Friday start against the Braves, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Hamels' Tuesday bullpen session went well and he feels his ankle is strong enough to start on Friday. That's good news, but Hamels can't seem to stay away from injury this season, and has been blasted while on the mound. Owners may want to be cautious with him and see how he fares on Friday before counting on him to anchor a fantasy rotation.

May 5, 2009

Cole Hamels will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, and if he believes his sprained left ankle has healed enough for him to field his position, he'll start Friday against the Braves, according to the News Journal.

Our View:

We'll let you know how Hamels' session goes. Check back for updates.

May 4, 2009

Cole Hamels, who is nursing a sprained left ankle, is slated to make his next start Friday against the Braves, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:

Sunday's rainout gives him more time to rest and recover. His next turn was previously scheduled for Tuesday against St. Louis.

May 2, 2009

Cole Hamels threw a bullpen session on Saturday. His sprained left ankle is improving, but general manager Ruben Amaro tells the Philadelphia Inquirer, "He felt some soreness a couple of pitches when he dragged his foot... It's very possible that he would not make his next start." Hamels is scheduled to start next Tuesday against the Cardinals.

Our View:

Hamels feels fine when pitching, but the Phillies are worried about him fielding his position and running when he hits. We should know more before the end of the weekend, but fantasy owners will want to be prepared for bad news.

May 1, 2009

Cole Hamels had his scheduled bullpen session scratched on Friday, according to MLB.com. He could throw Saturday instead in hopes of making his scheduled start on Tuesday against St. Louis.

Our View:

The only reason Hamels was scratched today was because the Phillies didn't want him to throw in the rain. He will probably throw tomorrow, so expect him to be ready to start on Tuesday.

April 30, 2009

Cole Hamels, who is dealing with a mild left ankle sprain, is slated to throw a bullpen session Friday and evaluate his ability to make his scheduled start Monday at the Cardinals, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:

Hamels previously mentioned that he is not planning on missing Monday's start. Hopefully he can put his bad luck with injuries this season behind him.

April 29, 2009

Ace pitcher Cole Hamels suffered only a "mild" left ankle sprain on Tuesday night. "It's not severe, so I'm not planning on missing a start," Hamels assures the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Obviously, we're going to see how it feels the next couple days, but I think it helps that we have an off day."

Our View:

Hamels tossed 4.1 scoreless innings on Tuesday before the injury, and he is finally starting to look more like his old self. He has had a string of bad injury luck early in this season, and let's all hope his ankle feels good over the next day or two.

April 28, 2009

According to MLB.com, Phillies' ace Cole Hamels left in the fifth inning of his start on Tuesday due to a sprained ankle.

Our View:

He apparently suffered the injury while trying to field a bunt. The severity of the injury is not yet known, but fantasy owners are likely expecting the worst as Hamels has been banged up all season. The good news is that he threw 4.1 scoreless innings before exiting.

April 28, 2009

Cole Hamels did not experience any soreness or discomfort in his left shoulder Monday, and is good to go for tonight's scheduled start against the Nationals, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:

The Phillies' ace hurler should be fine to employ in fantasy lineups after suffering a bruised left shoulder in his last outing with Milwaukee. Hamels holds a 2.04 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 12 starts against Washington.

April 26, 2009

Pitcher Cole Hamels threw a bullpen session on Saturday and confirms he will be ready to make his scheduled start on Tuesday, the Philadelphia Inquirer notes. Hamels has a bruised left shoulder.

Our View:

We pretty much already knew the ace would be ready, but it's nice to see him work on the side and give this extra assurance.

April 24, 2009

Cole Hamels is fine after suffering a left shoulder contusion during Thursday's game, and he is expected to make his next scheduled start, according to MyTeamRivals.com.

Our View:

Fantasy owners should be relieved, but hopefully he will start to perform well. He allowed 14 earned runs over 13 innings of work so far.

April 23, 2009

Cole Hamels allowed two earned runs on four hits over 3.1 innings in Thursday's 6-1 loss at Citizens Bank Park. He fired six strikeouts with no walks.

Our View:

As reported earlier, Hamels was forced to exit the game when struck on the left shoulder by a Prince Fielder line drive. He falls to 0-2 for the season, and it is uncertain if he will need to miss any time with the ailment.

April 23, 2009

Cole Hamels exited Thursday's game against Milwaukee in the fourth inning after being struck in the left shoulder by a Prince Fielder line drive, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

The injury is initially being called a shoulder contusion. We will keep you posted on the elite hurler's status.

April 21, 2009

Cole Hamels told the Philadelphia Enquirer that he came into this season unprepared due to a busy January schedule that came about thanks to his new celebrity status after winning the World Series.

Our View:

Hamels did too much TV and magazine in January, so Phillies fans and fantasy owners alike have to suffer. Still, at least he has acknowledged the issue and has said that he is focused and ready to be the Hamels of old. That should mean good things for Hamels, but even if this whole pitching thing doesn't work out, at least he has a backup career in the fast-paced world of male modeling.

April 17, 2009

Cole Hamels may feel better, but the numbers still don't look very good. The southpaw allowed eight hits and five runs over six innings against the Padres on Friday night. Hamels gave up three homers and two doubles, walked one, and struck out four.

Our View:

Hamels actually looked decent through four-plus, but he started to get hit hard in the fifth and sixth. His arm strength isn't where it needs to be at this point, which isn't surprising given him injury issues. We still expect him to turn it around at some point, provided the Phillies aren't hiding some structural issue.

April 15, 2009

According to MLB.com, Cole Hamels is scheduled to start on Friday after Wednesday's contest against the National was rained out.

Our View:

Be sure to adjust your lineups accordingly, as Hamels likely won't have a start like he did in his last performance. The World Series MVP is too talented to have another seven-run, 3.2 inning outing. Assuming he is as healthy as the Phillies say.

April 14, 2009

Cole Hamels threw a light bullpen session Monday to gear up for Thursday's start against Washington, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Hamels has been slow rounding into form due to stiffness and inflammation in his left elbow, but the ace hurler felt good after Monday's session.

Our View:

Hamels holds a 2.04 ERA over 12 career starts against Washington, with 83 strikeouts over 79.1 innings. He was rocked for seven earned runs in his season debut, but should be penciled into fantasy lineups for Thursday.

April 12, 2009

Cole Hamels is throwing a bullpen session today after first playing long-toss in the outfield, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:

Hamels was rocked for seven earned runs in his season debut, and is not expected to take the hill for his second start until Thursday against the Nationals. He was hindered in spring training by an elbow ailment, which was likely the culprit of his poor first outing.

April 10, 2009

Cole Hamels was roughed up on Friday by the Colorado Rockies. He was torched for seven runs on 11 hits in just 3.2 innings. He walked one, struck out one and allowed a home run to Garrett Atkins before being pulled in the fourth.

Our View:

The Phillies' ace and World Series MVP looked like a shell of his former self on Friday. Perhaps those elbow concerns from spring haven't completely subsided. The Phillies have to be hoping this was just an off day, because without Hamels their rotation looks disturbingly pedestrian.

April 4, 2009

Cole Hamels made it through five innings of work as the Phillies fell to the Rays 9-7 on Saturday. He allowed six hits, a walk, and six earned euns while striking out seven hitters.

Our View:

Hamels appears to be on track to start on April 10 in Colorado. Sure the six runs may look like a red flag, but the seven strikeouts appear to be a good sign for the young hurler. He has been dealing with a stiff elbow for most of spring training.

April 4, 2009

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Cole Hamels will be ready for his start on April 10 in Denver. He will start Saturday's final exhibition game.

Our View:

There's obviously a lot of concern tied to Hamels as he tweaked his elbow last month and pitched 227.1 innings last year prior to the playoffs. When healthy, he is among the best pitchers in the game, but owners need to be wary of taking him too high as there's no worse injury for a pitcher than a bum elbow.

March 30, 2009

MLB.com reports that Cole Hamels will not be available to start on opening day for the world champion Phillies. He will start an exhibition game on Saturday and believes he will be ready to go when the Phillies take on the Rockies in Denver on April 10. He threw 65 pitches over four innings against minor leaguers on Monday. The ace allowed 10 hits, three runs, and a walk while striking out five in the outing.

Our View:

The best news out of all this is that Hamels claims he feels zero pain in his elbow. However, his fastball is being clocked between 85-88, which is not nearly where he wants it to be throughout the course of the season. There still has to be some hesitancy when selecting Hamels, but if we are to believe he's pain free, than he could still very well be a Top 10 starter this season.

March 24, 2009

Ace Cole Hamels threw 3.2 scoreless innings in a minor league outing against the Pirates on Tuesday. The southpaw has been sidelined by left elbow soreness. "It felt good," Hamels tells the AP. "I think it was really just trying to establish feeling each pitch, one at a time, in each inning. And that was kind of the big thing -- how I'd feel in between innings. And I felt great." He allowed only one hit. Hamels is scheduled to pitch in a major league spring game on Sunday.

Our View:

Hamels is still slated to miss the season opener, but he could start as soon as April 10. Fantasy owners who've taken a chance on the lefty should feel very good about this news.

March 24, 2009

Pitching coach Rich Dubee stated that Cole Hamels has a "very, very, very small shot" of being ready to work in the rotation on opening day, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Hamels is slated to throw 50 pitches in a minor-league game today.

Our View:

Hamels experienced tightness and inflammation in his left elbow last week, which delayed his preparation for the season. He will need at least two more outings after today to get ready.

March 21, 2009

Cole Hamels expects to throw around 50 pitches in a minor league game next Tuesday, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. He had been dealing with tightness in his left elbow.

Our View:

Hamels felt fine after receiving an anti-inflammatory shot Tuesday, and he should continue to be targeted as a top-10 fantasy hurler.

March 19, 2009

MLB.com reports that Cole Hamels felt fine following a long toss session on Thursday."I didn't feel any tightness," Hamels said. "I felt a little soreness from where the needle went in, but all the other areas where I was feeling tightness I didn't feel anything. That's great."

Our View:

Hamels has not had any problems long tossing this spring, but the pain has been an issue during his stints on the mound. Pitching coach Rich Dubee says that Hamels could pitch in a game next week.

March 17, 2009

Cole Hamels' exam on his sore pitching elbow revealed no structural damage, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View:

This is great news, but his status to take the hill on opening day remains in question. If healthy, Hamels would be a top-10 fantasy hurler. Stay tuned for further updates.

March 16, 2009

Cole Hamels will have his sore pitching elbow examined, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:

The soreness has been lingering in spring training, but GM Ruben Amaro Jr. noted that the ailment is not a serious concern as of now. Stay tuned for further updates.

March 9, 2009

Cole Hamels made an disappointing start on Monday, allowing two runs on two hits in 2.2 innings. He did manage to strikeout three batters. The damage came on a two-run homer by Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan.

Our View:

This should just be a minor setback for Hamels who is coming off a 14-10 season with a 3.09 ERA.

March 4, 2009

Cole Hamels looked good in his spring debut against WBC's team Canada. He threw two scoreless innings that included two hits and a walk.

Our View:

Hamels has been taking it slow this spring, due to concerns that he will wear down after throwing 400-plus innings the last two seasons. Still, the World Series MVP is a lock as a top-10 starter.

Cole Hamels expects to fire around 40-50 pitches in Wednesday's spring start against Team Canada, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. He felt good after a bullpen session Sunday.

Our View:

The club wants to monitor his workload after throwing 227.1 innings in 2008, not including the playoffs. There is some risk that he could wear down this season, but is worth drafting as a top-8 fantasy hurler.

MLB.com reports that the Phillies are taking their time in preparing Cole Hamels for the regular season. He has yet to throw live BP and he will not pitch until March 4. The reason for the caution has to do with his 227.1 innings pitched last season, plus 35 more in the postseason.

Our View:

Hamels is still expected to be the opening day starter for the world champs. He is among the top pitchers in the game, but keep an eye on him this spring to see if he shows signs of fatigue or arm trouble.

The Phillies have signed Cole Hamels to a three-year extension worth $20.5 million, according to the NY Post.

Our View:

Hamels won 14 games in the regular season, and went a perfect 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in the playoffs while leading the Phillies to the World Series title. He was the MVP of both the World Series and NLCS, and should be headed for another solid campaign in 2009 as their staff ace.

The Philadelphia Daily News reports that lefthander Cole Hamels is set to make a big splash in arbitration, which began today. Hamels, the MVP of both the NLCS and World Series in 2008, made $500,000 last season but could see that figure balloon to as much as $4 million in 2009 when talks are initiated.

Our View:

Despite this, the Phillies are not expected to extend a long-term deal to Hamels, whose current contract won't expire until 2012.
